I like the idea of starting the meal plan by looking in the pantry and fridge before planning the meals this way you are forced to use what you have before it goes bad

I just paid off my last student loan a week ago! Paid off $42k in 2 1/2 years and now we're debt free! Also, meal planning is life. We were spending an average of $100-150/week for a family of 3 with no plan; so much uncertainty. Now we know exactly what we're having, what we need, and we average $75/week! Will never go back to the grocery store without a plan or a list.

Rachel! I started the baby steps this January. I have paid off all my debt (3,000 dollars) and I have almost 2000 in savings. My car has broken down twice this year and this is the first time I’ve had the money to cover my expenses without credit! It truly feels amazing. #sheworkshardsavingmoney 😉❤️

Checking the pantry and the fridge is such a good tip. I use to keep doubling up on products because I wouldn't check before leaving to the store. As for Costco, I go in without a cart and only buy what I can hold in my hands (yes people look at me all crazy like and offer me a cart) 😂

A few years ago my church went through FPU. As a result I paid off my car and decided not to buy a new car which turned out to be a super wise move for me at the time! Also recently I had to buy a new washer and was able to pay cash because of my emergency fund! Also I have been sharing some of your information with a niece and nephews. Thank you for what you do!

Some great ideas! I would add two things to meal planning/intentionality: Reverse the order of steps 2 and 3! Check the pantry/fridge/freezer BEFORE deciding what meals to make. This cuts down on food waste (which is wasted money!) and is a great practice for discipline (following through with eating what you purchased!). If you want to lump intentionality with your health into meal planning, see a registered dietitian nutritionist! You might be over-buying portions or springing for expensive items that you don't need. You may also hear about cheaper, healthier alternatives and get some personalized meal planning tips.

I used to do meal planning. For years. I don't do it anymore. Here's what I do - I find the meat that is on sale and buy a few packages of whatever it is...maybe it's a couple whole free-range chickens or a few packages of grass fed burger. If I buy more than one, then I have it for the following week or whenever, or I have it stockpiled for when there is no meat on sale. I stockpile meat, plus my husband is a hunter. Anyhow, I do it this way because usually meat is going to be the most expensive thing on people's grocery list, assuming they eat meat. Then I figure out, on the spot, what I am going to make with it, and try to keep it simple. I keep in mind that if I buy enough ingredients to make that meal last 2 or 3 days, that's less cooking I have to do. Tonight's meal is spaghetti squash spaghetti. The squash was $2, sauce and cheese $2.50 and loose sausage $2. This will feed my family of three supper for two days for $6.50....or $1.09 per meal.

Adding to the meal planning, especially if you're like me and super weak about eating out, keep the meal list on the refrigerator. I sometimes forget what I got from the store and this dumbs it down so great for me.

Hey rachel thanks for all these tips! I️ have to say meal prepping is a huge time and money saver. Although I️ would switch 2.plan meals and 3.check the pantry. Because if you check your fridge and pantry, you can see what needs to be used, and is soon expiring. So then you can plan your meals around the items you already have! It helps reduce food waste and is easier to plan. Decision fatigue is real!

Love it! I've been watching and listening for years but this year it's hitting me how thankful I am for the Dave Ramsey teaching, and your fun personality makes it so entertaining to refresh and get fire up about it again! I'm finishing grad school and getting married mid June (we'll be starting out debt free and that brings so much peace as we really "adult" this summer!). Because of your show I know we will make communicating finances a priority as we've already been communicating so much about future life expenses and wedding expenses (we live by our zero based "Wedding Master" excel sheet budget, haha!). I'm now so excited to meal plan with my new hubby too!

Love the new show! My husband and I are working really hard to pay off debts (including my student loans 🤦🏼‍♀️) and even tho we are in baby step 2, our marriage is so much stronger and our communication is awesome! Never thought we had problems with either but FPU has literally been a God send in our lives. We are finally able to put down roots in one state now that he’s retired from the Army and cannot wait to be able to buy/build our home in Tennessee. Not just 4 walls that’s a house, but a home filled with love and being debt free. 💕

This meal planning guide is exactly what I do and it's so helpful. I also plan the days that I know I'm not going to feel like cooking (baseball games, practices, gym night) and work those eating out nights into the budget so it's not a strain. Great show, love that I can watch this at my leisure.

I did a cost comparison of items I bought at WalMart & the same items at Sam’s Club. I found that the items often were not a bargain when buying in bulk, & there were too many temptations to buy other things at Sam’s Club, so I let my membership lapse. I now buy most groceries & paper products using Kroger ClickList, which helps me avoid impulse buys & stick to my budget. Plus they shop for me & then deliver to the car. WalMart offers a similar service, but I haven’t had a chance to use it.

Before ClickList, I would set a grocery budget, make a loose meal plan (briefly jot out meals for the week), make a grocery list, and then I would stick to buying only items on the list. Avoid the junk food aisles, shop alone if you can, take a calculator or use the one on your phone, & of course don’t go when hungry or stressed. It helps if you can go during less busy times/days.

you were talking about apps and I have one for you Out Of Milk is an app that you can enter the price per lb, oz or item and keeps track of it for you while you shop so you know how much your spending before you get to the check out it takes a little bit more time and might annoy some people but it helps keep you on track so you aren't wandering around grabbing everything in sight. It just helped me stay closer to budget today!
