7:37 to 7:42 The fact that she plays this section flawlessly at tempo with the ORIGINAL FINGERING is absolutely insane. A lot of pianists "cheat" during this part by crossing over the hands instead of playing the LH and RH independently, but Valentina manages to achieve that light cascading sound without sacrificing speed at all. The benchmark for perfect technique if ever there was one...

Very interesting to hear the piano part alone. It shows how wonderfully Rachmaninov integrates the piano and orchestra in the writing of the concerto.

Agreed. Perhaps a prominent violinist will record an analogous solo of, say the Beethoven or Brahms Violin Concerto. Even without the orchestra, which I admittedly fill in mentally, the Rach 3 is one of my favorite compositions of any century.

andrew7787 She doesn't make any mistakes. With Orchestra is fabulous, but drowns out some of the piano a bit. It's interesting and brilliant.

@Gary Allen Yes, I have a dual recording of Beethoven's Violin Concerto (one of the greats in the repertoire) along with the piano transcription thereof, and I enjoy both immensely. My earlier comment was aimed simply at hearing the violin solo part by itself, without any attempt to fill in the rest, something analogous to what we heard here.

Another idea, if you're still alive, is to listen to the pieces at 0.25x or whatever x you desire. I love hearing Fantasie Impromptu slow, it's another piece. It's crazy how well these pieces can be transposed to Jazz (is that the word?)

Everyone has preferences, of course. Each artist interprets a piece in their own way, which is refreshing. For me, Valentina is one of the greatest pianists of our time and she never fails to stir my emotions. Keep doing exactly what you're doing Valentina!

My daughter has always been extremely passionate about Classical Piano, especially about compositions written by Chopin and Rachmaninov, and she believes that Rachmaninov is always smiling every time you interpret his music. Your hands are certainly almost if not just as big as his were. It's such a blessing that you play Rachmainov's music so flawlessly; you have the perfect command for ANY kind of Classical Piano Composition, Valentina!!!!

@@dadaketgasparge Yes his hands reached 13 keys, they were big as shit. But this is only a statistic. He built a maximum of 12 keys into his piano pieces, and not often tho. For the most part you have to play octaves with rachmaninoff, but these are also exhausting to play. There are also enough 9ths and 10ths in rachmaninoffs pieces, after all he didn't care about the playability of other people, similar to Franz Liszt.

I used to get bummed down when I heard others play BIG pieces and thinking to myself "I am never going to achieve this." And "There are other who are younger and play better." But I eventually understood that I am only wasting my time doing that. I instead enjoy what I do and learn pieces that make me happy. And I am sure Ms Valentina is enjoying what she does to the fullest extent and doesn't care what others think.

you can achieve what ever level you decide to. its up to you. but just so you know, those super hard pieces are more enjoyable when some one else is playing it. trust me, I've played really hard pieces and the level of endurance and concentration required will not allow you to enjoy it.

Sir, you can play whatever you want as long as you practice efficiently, remember this is a studio version, she probably spent hours or even days or more to get a perfect take, I tell you this because I've heard her playing live and believe me, she's human like us... To me, how good you are, is how well you do when someone asks you to play something for them or when you come across an "airport" piano and you haven't practiced in a few days. In other words, "your worst" is what is real and systemic.

There is an element that requires you to be born to do it. Just as anyone can sing, but so few have that extra special something that some like to call an anointing...take every other opera singer and then think of Pavarotti - a household name. Sure there's lots who can but some just sparkle 🌟⭐🌟

What makes you think it's one take? Not that I necessarily doubt she can play the whole thing flawlessly without edits, but with the video constantly changing, it's fairly easy to splice.

I am always amazed when I see pianists with small hands playing anything by Rachmoninoff. She is sublime. The first opening measures are simply divine. I have never seen or heard it played this exquisitely.

LUGANSKY WHO??? The greatest interpreter of the Rach 3 during the mid-20th century was the incomparable BYRON JANIS, followed perhaps by his teacher, Vlad Horowitz. But only Val on her recent Decca triumphs dared to play the "ossia cadenza", and she was magnificent!!!

Mrs. Valentina opens a door to a new time of classic pianists. She is highly expressive. No doubt she plays 100 % according to scales but there are some reflects in her play which offers a new area to the listener. Never booring, more creating something new out of the old. Послушайте как играет Алексей Султанов, он выиграл конкурс В. Клайберна который проходил 1989г. в США, сам В. Горовиц принял А. Султановна у себя дома, и они дурачились в четыре руки за роялем В. Горовица. К сожалению в 2004г. А. Султанов умер от повторного инсульта в больнице, перед смертью его навещал в больнице В. Клиберн , жаль Султанов умер совсем молодым, у него было много завистников, впрочем как у всех гениев, уникальный, был пианист.

Rachmaninoff de kampioen van de piano laatromantiek. Ode aan hem ! en Ode aan iedereen die hem op de lessenaar neemt of dat nu studeren of uitvoeren is. Rachmaninoff is een geweldig componist die ons een zeer breed spectrum biedt van eenvoudig verstild tot grof (maar altijd beheerst en nobel) geweld. De man is niet genoeg te prijzen. De gouden medaille voor hem waar het pianomuziek en pianovertolkingen betreft wat mij betreft. Zoals Jorge Bolet eens zei; Absolutely breathtaking !

I am not certain that most visitors to Valentina's performance really understand how difficult Rach 3 is. I knew all 5 Beethoven Piano concertos by the time I was18, including the Grieg and both Brahm's. Even now, Rach 3 is well above me, To be able to perform Rach 3 for a ticketed professional performance is the rough equivalence to getting a Phd in physics from Cal tech and qualifying and graduating a neuro surgical residency. sanjosemike

Beethoven concertos are no where near Rach 3. sorry. almost any amateur classical pianist can play Beethoven piano concertos. Now his sonatas, thats a whole different thing, they are hard. but still not at the rach 3 level.sorry to disappoint you. but i can guarantee you Rach 3 is not above you. it all depends on how powerful your intent to achieve it is. Valentina does it because she believes she can. i doubt that she has ever doubted what she can do in the piano.

Tom Marvolo Riddle You can always roll chords if you can't reach them. I can just barely reach a tenth, it's a struggle. I wouldn't let that get in my way though. Even the pros have to roll chords sometimes

I have known her about 15 years ago. And she is the top pianist as she was then. Her piano technic is so fascinating that can't take my eyes off from her fingers.

She is a very sensitive player, her technique is very impressive, but most importantly, she does play truly from her heart, you can clearly hear her real love for music and for the composer. I'm glad that Valentina is being recognised as a great young artist, she does deserve it. Unlike other young famous young pianists such Khatia, Valentina really speaks truly love for music, she is not trying to show herself as a sex symbol or trying to sell her physical appearance, she does respect the meaning of real music and the composer. I hope she will always be successful and well respected for her truthful devote to classical music.

Only Valentina can do justice to the Bosendorfer Grand Imperial. What a performance. Only Valentina can say this was not the hardest piano piece to play. What talent.
