Rachmaninoff performs his solo piano works in a spectacular recording made on a Bosendorfer 290SE piano, using the music rolls made in his time. This remarkable listening experience brings Rachmaninoff's phenomenal pianistic talent to life in today's world. By using unprecedented new techniques of transfer and reproduction, the mechanical aspects of music roll performances have been eliminated. More astonishingly, these advances reveal the subtleties and fine details of Rachmaninoff's playing with startling clarity, showing us why he was regarded as perhaps the greatest pianist of his time.
- Prelude in C Sharp Minor, op.3 no.2 (recorded: 17 March 1919)
- Lilacs, op.21 no.5 (recorded: 6 April 1922)
- The flight of the Bumblebee (recorded: 1 February 1929)

My father always told me that the greatest pianist of all time was Josef Hofmann. then when asked about Sergei Rachmaninoff he would say , well there was no greater than him. My father, of course had all their recordings and he had gone to hear both of them in the concert hall. He heard all the greats who performed after the mid 1930’s and he knew, I believe, what he was talking about. I am not a professional musician as my father was but after listening to the performances and recordings of literally hundreds of pianists I must agree that these two are above and beyond all others in the world of the piano.

Oh, but it is. It's from recordings he made on an "automatic reproducing piano" that were restored. These pianos played back exactly what the performer played, exactly as they played it, including pedaling. Like the uploader said, if unconvinced, search for "A Window in Time". If still unconvinced, you can compare this album to audio recordings made of Rachmaninov playing in the 20s/30s/40s and hear that it is most certainly his playing.
@bratcheda1
@bratcheda1 Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is phenomenal, but we should keep in mind that the pianos of today (like this Boesendorfer) sound a bit different from the pianos of the 1910s, so, interestingly, we hear a different sound from the one he himself heard when he recorded it.

By the time this prelude in C Sharp Minor was recorded, Rachmaninov was 45 and tired of playing it - and it shows near the end when he seems to rush through it. Too bad we have no recording when he was 19 after he composed it. Historians say he played it with more passion at that earlier age.

This clangorous, modernist presentation of Rachmaninoff is a disservice to his art. Yes, the piano roll conveys the timing of his playing. But utterly gone is the "tone-world" world of this great artist. This is "raw data Rachmaninoff." Note that Rachmaninoff used to favour a German Steinway.. We can hear what he actually sounded like in his recordings. Yes, these old recording have surface noise, etc. I hope we can restore these old recordings with AI, etc., in the future so we don't have to deal with the "make believe" of piano roll performances..

Actually transcribing other composers works for piano is a time honored Romantic tradition. Probably the best known are the many piano transcriptions by Franz Liszt including the nine symphonies of Beethoven. Rachmaninoff also composed a number of transcriptions many of the very faithful to the original orchestral score such as The Flight of the Bumblebee or the Scherzo from Mendelssohn's Mudsummers Night Dream.

After listening to his older recordings, this really sounds nothing like Rachmaninoff to me. Rachmaninoff had a refined almost cold way of playing that wavered more with the chromaticism, showed incredible depth and ability to stretch rhythm. This is just too constantly pretty, robotic + stereotypically modern IMO…. at least after the prelude. The prelude does sound more like him. Maybe it's because they used all of the modern crappy compression/production techniques?
@RollaArtis
@RollaArtis 9 жыл бұрын
bledredwine Yes you have exactly described my impression. The 'playing' is curiously antiseptic, too perfect, too neat -- robotic even. But this is what people expect and want to hear. Otherwise, its not commercial material but really that's what it's all about. I don't know why they bothered with doing all this because we have his phono recordings (of the same pieces) which are obviously more realistic.
@musicsdarkangel
