I miss playing in orchestra. When the music swelled the ground beneath your feet rumbled. Sometimes various harmonies were so beautiful you’d get goosebumps. It was the best time in my life.

This was the theme in the first movie of Maria Felix. With Jorge Negrete and Rene Cardona. (1943). Music arrangements by Manuel Esperon. I grew up with this music. Thank you.

Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" is a set of 24 variations based on the 24th caprice for solo Violin by Italian Violin virtuoso Nicolò Paganini. The caprice of Paganini is uttered ver batim in the first variation of Rach's composition. From here the 24th caprice is transformed as it traverses through various keys. The most infamous of these variations is the 18th, which sees the Paganini theme turned on its head. Of this most beautiful 18th Variation, Rachmaninoff himself stated, "This is my favorite... I dedicate it to my agent". The finale sees the proclamation of Rach's obsession: the "Dies Irea" (or "Day of Wrath"), from the Latin mass which occurs in nearly every work by the Russian composer. The piece ends charmingly as a fortissimo build up yields a quiet response from the piano...the utterance of the original theme in a most playful manner.

I could never reconcile this variation with most of the others, particularly the theme played on the cello by Julian Lloyd Webber that introduced a TV arts programme. And then one day in a video, someone said the same thing, The reply was, "Oh you mean where he turned upside down or back to front". In the end, I thought this is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written so it ddoesn't matter.
