Sergei Rachmaninoff composed his second symphony in E minor between the months of October 1906 and April 1907 and subsequently premiered it in Saint Petersburg on the 26th of January, 1908. Beaten down by the dramatic failure of his first symphony, Rachmaninoff ended his three-year spurt of depression with the triumphant victories that were his second piano concerto and second symphony, the latter of which received the Glinka Award. The symphony is a monumental work showcasing Rachmaninoff's masterful control of suspense and melody. Unfortunately, being almost an hour long, the symphony has often been plagued by various cuts to its material (which are in part also present in this recording).
