From the LP shown above, issued in 1954. The recording you hear was made in 1947. Artur Rubinstein is soloist; Walter Susskind leads the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Note: Rubinstein hits a wrong note at the start of variation 19 (at about 16:37). I would be interested to know if this error, for which at the time of this recording there was no technology to correct, has been edited in more recently produced CD versions of this performance.

OMG the "WRONG NOTE"!!! WTH?? I really laughed out loud when I found it... and yes, I LOVE IT TOO! It reminds me of the note in the intro of Working on the Road, track 2 recorded in 1970 by Ten Years After on the album Cricklewood Green. They were obviously laying tracks to a reel to reel and over dubbing the master. At some point in the intro somebody's arm slightly touched the outside of the reel and the consequent slowing of the tape sounds like a digital frequency sweep. I am so glad that it was left in the original master because it makes the entire album so much more personal, never mind the fact that 98% of the people that will ever listen to it would ever actually know the difference. I feel exactly the same about this note! I really did hose myself when I found it. It will NEVER make Arthur any less of a genius. It only makes him more human, personal, accessible and more loved as far as I am concerned. Deadly sin, my tuchas!!

Phenomenal performance: Musically, technically; beautifully matched by a sympathetic and master conductor. Even for 1947 recording, you can hear "the Rubinstein unique, full, round sound". Even at high speed he makes music and sings in every note. Wrong notes? What a waste of time trying to catch one or two wrong notes and forget about catching the music!!!

Although the sound quality is not so high, the highest technique of Rubinstein can be fully heard from this recording. It's a real rhapsody!

wrong note is considered a deadly sin , it seems... I couldn't care less . Its a great performance in my book. A deadly sin to me is playing all the right notes and still not understand what you are playing.... (or listening to ,for that matter)

Beethoven said that playing a wrong note is insignificant but to play without passion is inexcusable

Love that wrong note...shows that genius lies not in correct notes alone! ;-) I feel I'm in the same room as Mr. Rubinstein and company. He brings a majestic depth to these variations without pretension nor syrup. The infamous 18th variation is just one of many in which we hear his light touch of trademark tone that belongs to him alone. Never before have I heard both Debussy and Prokofiev in this piece. Bravo! Encore, please!! The orchestra, too, was alive to conductor, music and soloist!

I agree with you, but why infamous, the 18th..? Rachmaninov was much criticized in periods from the 'modern' oriented critics, with a preference for the rational, non-emotionality en-vogue at the time. But I love it, love it - famous , infamous or whatever.

This is a fantastic performance from the musical and artistic point of view. Even though not edited this is still a masterful performance. Can you expect infallibility from any great artist? The split note is so slight it could escape attention. It is really a non-issue not worth of any attention!!!

As you stated davidhertzberg, editing was not possible at the time of this recording. One simply performed a few takes and chose the best one. So, in a sense, we are really hearing performances--albeit originating in a studio. I. for one, hope they never "fix" the wrong note. BTW--was this originally pressed on 78's?

It was. In 1949 RCA reissued this on 3 clear red vinyl 45's (WDM-1269) and a 10" LP (LM-26). They added the Szymanowski 4th Symphony (nicknamed Concertante) for this 12" LP (LM-1744). All of these were probably dubbed from a 33 rpm acetate disc, since RCA didn't use tape until 1950.
