Black home ownership has not gained since 1968, obviously a result of Johnson's and traditional Democrat policies.

How so? Since Johnson’s term ended Republicans have held the White House more than Democrats (8 terms vs. 6). Medicare, Medicaid, the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act are 4 huge achievements that occurred under Johnson. Who is against any of these things? I can’t think of any president of either party who passed more significant legislation since then.

Blacks have been able to purchase any items they want over the last sixty years without any restrictions. This is just another political stunt to divide us more. Why are homes in predominantly black communities worth less and why do middle class and higher blacks move out of black neighborhoods?

Wealth gap is the truest statement. Because upon venturing outside your own couple of black areas you will find a ton of very exclusive white areas. And my thoughts are “how are there so many hidden beautiful wealthy white neighborhoods” and the ratio of whites that can afford to live in this exclusivity is astounding. 🤔🤔🤔

"...and even being Asian is frowned on." A comment like this is why there's a divide amongst blacks and Asians. This comment suggests, in regards to white supremacy, Asians are exempt from it. With this thinking, many Asians think and follow the same practices towards blacks, because they feel they have the save privileges as whites. The reality is, white supremacy frowns on Asians too, no matter which part of the country you live--the pandemic really exposed this. Maybe with the understanding of this, there wouldn't be this devide. And yes, I know you didn't mean it that way, but it's in plain English. Learn from it and grow.

I am moving to Duluth because of the racial demographic there. I am so tired of having my cars stolen and dealing with this frightening generation of angry kids with lots of guns and no fathers. I was a career software guy in NY. Anyone can get a two year degree for free and get a job starting at 80K here but there have been virtually no black software engineers at my jobs. What is stopping them? And all the big companies like MTV (no blacks there but many Latinos) have reachout programs only available to black kids. Make no sense.
@RS-dm4yo
@RS-dm4yo 19 күн бұрын
I think you need to look deeper into the black experience to answer your questions--or do you really want to? As humans we do what is rewarded, just like any other species in the animal kingdom. Instead of looking at it from your point of view and value system, you have to look at how all the barriers a person would have right where they are to overcome them. Like you can just up and move to Duluth, because you are privileged to do so. Please don't oversimplify the process. Huge numbers of blacks left Milwaukee and what you see is what's left over. Also, there's still an influx of blacks still coming from Mississippi to this day. How bad Mississippi when they think Wisconsin is better.

Any family which was denied housing post WW2 is on average, far worse off than families that were able to get a home and build wealth. In Wisconsin and the rest of America, black families were denied those homes. Most of the racial wealth gap is attributed to 20th century housing policies. There are people alive today who were denied a home based on their race. They were denied the biggest wealth growing opportunity in the history of America-- post WW2 suburbia home ownership. And as a result their families today are an order of magnitude poorer than white families who were able to buy the house they wanted. In America poor people generally cannot afford a higher education without going into a half lifetime of debt. Many need to work during and after high school to support their family and do not have time for higher education. This lack of higher education means the next generation of black families will grow up poorer than their white counterparts. We need to break the cycle. We need to provide everyone the opportunity to get a higher education regardless of income. We need to dismantle the exclusionary zoning that still persists in our cities that were designed to keep black families away from white families. These are things we need to do TODAY, so that in 40 years the next generation doesn't look back and ask, why were they so cruel, which is what we ask to the generation before us.

Over the last 70 years people were free to purchase homes anywhere they chose and the lack of wealth created by someone has been a personal choice over the same time period. I know this issue is a political one but the argument should be based on real facts and honesty. What is the connection between 1940-1965 policies and wealth generation today? Does anyone on this thread know how wealth is actually created?
@BjtheLawyer_
@BjtheLawyer_ Ай бұрын
The first 20 years of the FHA loan, black Americans were largely locked out of from taking advantage of the program. Why is this important because the FHA loan was implemented after WW2 & created the middle class. These homes were relatively cheap with low interest rates. Real estate over time always appreciates. Say you buy a home in 1955 for $10,000. But 1980, that same home is now worth $100,000. At this point, the house is paid off. You have all the equity in the home. With equity in the home you can get a junior mortgage or home equity line of credit for improvements. You can use the equity as collateral for a loan. With that loan you can use to pay your kids college tuition, so that your kids can get an education debt free! You can use the loan to start a business! You can sell the home and purchase another home. Once a house paid off you can save more money overall! Because black Americans were discriminated against, we missed the opportunity to take advantage of the early years of the FHA loans. This is where the wealth gap began. Because prior to the 1950s, there was not a huge wealth gap between the average black & white families! Further, by the time black Americans were able to get home loans, the home prices were more expensive. Instead of paying 7,000 like in 1955, they now were paying $50,000 for a similar home in 1970. The more expensive a home is the more difficult it is to qualify for the mortgage, the more you have to place as a down payment, and the longer it takes to actually takes to pay off the loan. So, yes black Americans have the legal right to buy homes now. But, we haven’t had the same opportunities as white to build wealth through real estate. You can easily research this, many economists talk about it!

Wealth is generational for most families. But so is culture, knowledge, community. Family culture can include work ethic, mentality, belief systems, and trauma. Many people of color still have those traumatic scars that were passed on. Its difficult to develop a work ethic when your output just gets taken from you, when opportunities are not available to succeed. Those belief systems while outdated have the tendency to move through generations. Not to mention, alcoholism, cheating, abuse. Let's look at an example today. Imagine renting an apartment for $3000 with no support from anybody. Now imagine your friend, neighbor and coworker doesn't have that because they inherited their house fully paid. Their parents were able to achieve that because their own parents helped them out partially for the down payment. You work the same, but he's got an extra $2500/mo for his family. Housing is the basis of wealth for most Americans.

Among the best ways for descendants of 1st Generation African Americans to obtain reparation is to provide significantly reduced interest rates on home purchase. For this to be accomplished there need to be a group of African American lobbyists organized to appeal 1st to the African American Caucus in Congress. This will be another bold step to demonstrate how much they care about their Constituents of African American descent and the need for reparation due to discrimination by white folk that denied them of wealth building. White families of this generation benefitted greatly from their descendants ability to gain wealth through home ownership among other benefits that African Americans were denied. Though the current named banks were not directly guilty they benefitted also from a system that provided them the funds to be able to exist today.
