It's time to say good bye to my Africa Twin. What a great time we had in this weird 2020. We had a 7.500 km trip in Turkey together, we had a lot of fun on Romania's adventure roads and I used it as my daily ride for some time. Now, here are my insights after about 10.000 km using the standard 2020 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin.

We met a Romanian guy in a petrol station in our last trip in Romania. He was a proud owner of an Africa 750 and 1000 and with the 1000 he rode from his town in Romania to cappadocia turkey in a single day 1700km. That says something about the bikes comfort.

Brilliant review. I have exactly that bike, the 2020 DCT standard and you’ve highlighted exactly the same good points and faults as I have found. - The seat is uncomfortable after an hour. I have dictated an Air Hawk Dual Sport seat pad, which solves that. - The screen is non-adjustable. I fitted a Givi tall screen. - DCT. I have a left ankle injury, so it’s brilliant for me. Best of all about DCT - you can’t stall it. So if you’re off road, it’s excellent. - Tank size. I’m not as adventurous as you, but 18 litres at 55mpg gives me 200 miles or 300 km, which is fine. - Panniers. The Honda panniers are really expensive. I’d like to try the Honda plastic ones, as they integrate better with the styling and sit closer to the bodywork. - The electronics. This is one complicated machine and you will need to be familiar with menus to get the most from it. It took me over 1000km to get to grips with it, but it is superb. - Bluetooth and phone integration. It can now be updated to take Android Auto as well as Apple CarPlay. You’ve nailed the best thing about it though. It hits the sweet spot between the massive BMW 1250GS and the KTM790, Tenere700 type bikes. This is the best review I’ve seen on KZfaq.

Great review. I have the 2017 version. The most comfortable seat. Drove it for almost 11 hours straight and no pain whatsoever. I am 6’1”. Even in speeds over 130 the fuel consumption is almost the same as driving 110. Less buttons which I find great. Awesome bike. Just a bit on the heavy side. Love the DCT. I took the Mitas e07+ and they last for ever. I did more that 13k on them. The mitas tires become unstable after 165 km but who rides at those speeds? Maybe one pass for few seconds.... Anything over 130 km is just not realistic. Too noisy and what is the rush? Trying to get a ticket from the police? Found that the adjustable Givi screen is the perfect solution and it’s not that expensive. I also love the panniers that just slip on with no rack and easy to put. I dropped the bike few times with them loaded and no issues. Most of the time we don’t use them and bike looks better without the metal rack... Keep on the great stuff in the channel

When trying to decide between the standard and Adventure Sport versions try to get a test ride off road with both. If you never go off road the taller and heavier AS model is manageable, if you are tall enough. The added weight of the larger fuel load coupled with the high mounting position and taller suspension combine to raise the center of gravity significantly. In my considerable experience it is much easier to drop the AS model in these conditions. The better suspension on the AS does help with ride comfort and control. The DCT transmission is very refined, but adds 22 lbs and protrudes more. The cases are thin and crack easily in the rocks, leaving you stranded. For serious off road the standard model is much better. The stock skid plate is too thin and weak to properly protect the engine. Mine caved in and destroyed the sump on a rock. Fortunately I only needed to replace the sump, not the entire engine. Invest in a thicker aftermarket skid plate. If you are short of stature you will really like a KTM 790-890 better. Lower seat height, lower CG because of the innovative fuel tank design, and considerably lower overall weight. I would pay more for the better suspension that comes on the R model.

My thoughts as well. I went with the 2022 AT base model and added the good bits. I'm 5'9" 160 - totally comfortable. This is the best bike ever. In the future, should I get an itch to scratch, I'll add ohlins.

Great review as always. I'm sure if you ride at 120 instead of 130 on the highway you'd get easily over 300km between fill ups. The faster you go the more air resistance there's no way around it. On my 2019 AT I get 400km most of the time with a mix of country roads and highway.

Great Vid yet again. I have 2020 Africa Twin same as that but manual. FUEL: Fuel tank is actually 18.8L and on Hwy relaxed cruising at 115km/h I get around 4.3L/100km or less!! So 440 km per tank. So was surprised when you show 6L/100km and say fill up every 200km Even at that rate you still get over 300km from a tank. I wonder if the DCT is less efficient or the tyres affect a lot or your bike was not tuned well ?? I'd rather have a lighter bike than the Adventure Sport for 90% of my riding and then when I occasionally need more fuel for a remote trip than put a 5L fuel bladder on the back!! Why carry all that weight around ALL the time when you rarely need it. SCREEN: Definitely should be adjustable like rest of the competition!! Wolfgang Rolf at Batzenparts makes a great bracket to add on which makes your existing screen adjustable!

Nice video. I have one too, the manual version, in red. I've had it for about 7 months now and I completely agree with most of what you said, especially the seat. I tried the Honda tall windshield and I didn't like it for the same reasons as you, so I opted for the Puig one, perfect. Blocks out the wind, is adjustable, doesn't distort the view if I choose to look through it, but I don't because I can see over it. I was however surprised with you mileage. For me, at the speed limit on the highway (+/- 120 km/h) I get 400 km from my bike. It might be the tires? On that note, they maybe the reason for your wobbles at +150 km/h (I believe you have M+S tires? Those aren't rated to go above 160 km/h). I still have the stock AX41T tires and I have zero complains on wobbling at high speed. For me, my biggest and probably only two annoyances - other than the seat - are the lack of rear carrier for top box and the central stand, that in my country amount to nearly 700 euros in extras. But I guess they wanted to save weight...

Great review,all the things you said are true except the part about the Dct and that is it unstable over 150.I have the stock tires and I 've been travelling around 180-200 and I had zero problems,the bike is very stable,even on 210-215 when I reached it I had slight wobble,which is bearable. About the DCT box things are complicated either you will love it or hate it,its like Abs or no Abs on bike which many folks grinch about :P. For me I was about to choose between manual or Dct and I am happy that I picked the Dct one. In the city I use auto on S1 mode which u get me less fuel consumption around 4.6 to 5.1 (depends how fast I accelerate or driving),I had not to worry about gear shifting when I am braking. On open road/off road I go with manual always (gear shifting from hand which is cool) and yes the fuel consumption above 150 sux but who cares, the FUN starts and that is all that matters :D Greeting from Greece bro!

Same here, tires quite likely, panniers even more so. Standard bike with kinda road rubbers (metzeller karoo street) no problem up to 180/190 km/h. On the other hand with panniers (sw motech trax evo) it become pretty shaky pretty soon. On a more offroad tyre (karoo extreeme) it becomes scary at highway legal speed 😅

If money is no object, basic version fully equiped is better than Adventure Sports. Because of the weight and looks. Also i do not like the double headlights of the Adventure Sports and Gold rims. Solution for the seat is to buy optional Honda Touring seat for this model which comes 4cm more of foam.
@mihaimihai9254
@mihaimihai9254 3 жыл бұрын
You're right, but for a long adventure trip you will need to improve the basic version more than regarding the seat and the price will become the same. In my opinion the most important plus of the Adventure Sports version is that it has spoked rims (even if they are gold) with tubless tyres.

Honda designed a smaller tank on this bike so you end up stopping more often to not feel the poorly made uncomfortable seat. Dude, @9:13 you were already out of gas!! I like to know if your drone is smart enough to follow you into those tunnels. LOL I subscribed to your NEW KZfaq channel, will you have your buddy with the eyeglasses on your channels too?

Nice review as usual. I find the level of equipment on the standard AT low so basic options increase the bill quickly and at the en this bike is not competitive in terms of price.

Nice review from your travel with the Africa Twin. I like the standrad Red a lot and I´am a off road rider. You mean, the manuell gearbox with quickshifter is better for off road and gravel roads than the DCT? Thanks.

@RacingandAdventure
@RacingandAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
All of them are good bikes. The BMW is most comfortable and more street-oriented, the AT is better for off-road. The Tigers: the Rally Pro for off-road, the GT for street use

I don't do off road but I love the looks of this bike. I can't afford to have one bike for everyday use (going to work in the city) and one for highways and jurneys . Right now I own the bandit 1250S which is wonderful both in the city and for long jurneys, but after 14 years i want to change bike. Do you think I will be satisfied with new AT? I love the up position. I would like to have the same power experience witht the one I had from the Bandit 1250 like alot of torgue low and good acceleration up to 150. Will I find AT bad in the city? I mean much worse than the bandit 1250? Ι have also seen your review on Tracer 900, does AT feel as quick as Tracer up to 150 Km/h? Is tracer much better in twists? I mean how would you compare them?

Another great video and review! Choosing a new travel mate for 2021 I did consider Honda ATAS. Ended up with KTM1290. Not because of its power though. In fact, think it is right to say that if you're a lower grunt'ish or rpm sort of rider, who likes a mix and match between off/on-road, the 1290 needs the oomph to be a decent match to 1250GS. Or the ATAS for that matter. Almost all bikes have "flaws". Things we need to do for personal adjustments. Whether Honda, BMW, KTM or other. I always factor in or expect things to change, or add. Would think that applies to all or most riders? I also liked ergonomics, disliked the seat, the fact that there's no adjustable mechanism for the wind screen, the overall fuel economy, and a few other things. Yet the list of things to like was indeed comprehensive. At the end of the day, one only knows what one knows, by personal experience. Often gained whilst inspired by listening to good riders and reviewers like yourself. Their real life experiences. Maybe one day I'll choose the ATAS. It has a lot of compelling features. But this year (or next) a new creature will make it to the market A creature many expect much out of, or from. Thinking of Norden 901. It remains to be seen if indeed it will be a game changer, both a contender and fierce competitor to all the other creatures in the upper/middle adventure segment.

I love the looks, the engine and the tech this bike comes with but would you recommend this bike to someone driving 90% on-road? How does it handle on the twisties? I would go touring with it, of course. But I would also like to use it for my evening fast rides.

All the things you say that you don't like are solved by the adv sports version, I think the problem is that you got confused when choosing a model. Personally, it seems to me to be one of the most perfect motorcycle that has been manufactured in the last decade, a totally versatile motorcycle of high manufacturing quality, a Honda like the mythical ones of this brand.

Seat is narrow good for crazy enduro stuff but jo food for touring! Atwin is enduro crazy mashine on this bike you can follow smal enduro dirt bike in 80% cases.
