Rack and pinion bushing adjustment

This is the way many manufacturers use for the adjustment procedure.

have a question may be can give advice. rack shaft has play. can a guy adjust spring to eliminate play? sloppy rack inside housing. at first glance it appears bad inner tie rod. but its rack is loose can this be adjusted?

Sorry I do not get notifications on comments. The rack gear has play would indicate the rack bushings are worn. I have personally never ran into that.

What purpose does this adjustment nut serve other than adjusting the steering feel? Is this something that should be incorporated into regular maintenance? I just heard about this and never knew about it before.

From my understanding it should be done on more older vehicles it makes the stireeng more responsive and by adjusting it will save the part from being replaced unessesery for just a simple easy adjustment.

This is a gear lash adjustment. Yes the commenter is correct it would be an old vehicle. However the Cavaliers and Sunfires a long time ago had pinion gear bearings go bad and upon replacement we had to complete this adjustment while still under warranty,
