I have an 07 LTZ that needs the rack and pinion replaced because of a leak also. I'm so glad to see you did it without dropping the subframe like some other videos show. I'm pretty mechanical and think I can do it. Your video was so helpful to see how well you did it. Thanks for sharing.

Hey TDY, Thanks for the time and effort you put in this video I really appreciate the suggestions you give while working even if you don't follow all of them yourself (lol). Makes it easier for the next guy. I came across your video because I just got a phone call from a friend who has a 2011 Impala with hard steering after a jiffy lube oil change. My thinking is "They" got oil on the belt or something "They" did that caused the problem, at least I hope so. But if it's a power steering pump or rack and pinion issue I'm now armed with the information I need to tackle the job. So thanks again for all your time and effort keep up the good work you got a new subscriber in me. Take care TG

@thediyyardie7192 2 жыл бұрын
Much respect and thank you for taking your time to show your appreciation, and also for subscribing TG, most people get the info and don't give it a second thought. but as for your friends car, oil on the belt could cause a hard steering, but that should go away after driving for a while and it dries off, it would have to be a continuous leak onto the belt for oil to cause that for a long period of time. also some of the Impalas carry an electrically powered rack, that is something you need to verify first. please let me know what you find, interested to hear what caused or is causing lt.

Thanks for showing the "cheap and lazy" way. I knew I didn't need them crows foot wrenches or the sub frame bs that I had to do this job the first time. Unfortunately 1 year later doing it all over again because oreillys sold me a bad part

You're welcome Ricky, but I did need to use the crow foot wrench on one of the fluid lines, and if I can get a job done quicker by doing less work, I wouldn't call it lazy, short cut or tricks of the trade maybe, as long as it results in the job being done properly, thats air that matters.

@@thediyyardie7192 not a good start. One end of the sway bar separated and broke. That adds another $100. I had to cut one of the tie rod ends off so I'm replacing both of those...another $30. @@smulligannj it sounds as though those parts were already on the out anyways, you just speeded up the process.. soak the nuts and bolts with penetrating fluid, that will help to keep them from braking or striping, even at the time while you're loosening them..

I have replaced the power steering pump, and bled the lines, that didn't work. It's hard steering up to a point even though I'm going 40 mph around corners. I'm going to try replacing the rack and pinion?
@thediyyardie7192
@thediyyardie7192 5 ай бұрын
That could most likely be it, once the internal seals become worn the system can't maintain the correct pressure thus the result is a hard steering.

I just did this job with a new rack from Napa, bleeding the system for about 2 hours ... But now I don't have power steering 😢... It had power steering this morning but now I don't, there's no noises coming from the pump like if I was low on fluid.. Everything was installed right... Any advice
@thediyyardie7192
@thediyyardie7192 7 ай бұрын
@buck1569, check to see if power steering fluid looks clear with no foam or bubbles with engine running, if foamy then more fluid is needed, also make sure its up to proper level. If all of that checks out, try holding engine at about 2000 RPM in park, while doing that, turn steering from right to left, if it feels easier to turn, the issue is most likely a faulty pump, if no change then I would lean towards the new rack being possebly defective..

@thediyyardie7192
@thediyyardie7192 3 ай бұрын
$1300 to $1700 is average shop price, but you can probably find a shop to it for less if you order the part yourself, you can order a less expensive rac, but the drawback there is most shops won't provide a warrantee if you supply the part. I have a reman rac listed in the comment box below the video for $240, but you should be able to find a new one online for around $500, ultimately its your choice on shop or DIY.
