The Rack Driven 7 Segment Display
•••
This mechanism uses the inverse cams from my last video to push and pull on a rack and pinion. The pinion is connected to the segment on the front of the display, and shows/hides the segments according to which number is being displayed.
•••
The whole thing is made with just 3d printed parts that snap together. The STL files are available on JBVCREATIVE.com or free for my thangs members- link is in bio!

This reminds me of old minecraft clocks that used a similar camshaft system to fire 1 tick pulses through non transparent blocks. Which would then feed a locked on or off signal to each segment.

Awesome! Would be cool to see a mechanical 7 segment clock driven by an escapement. Instead of a quartz clock trying to look mechanical, you have a fully mechanical clock which looks almost digital.

@@Thesnakerox the servo driven one only rotates backwards because the servo can only turn somewhere between 180° and 270°. The rollover from 6 to 0 for the higher minute digit would need different cams.

@Fightre_Flighte
@Fightre_Flighte 2 ай бұрын
If you ran off of a few Geneva drives, you wouldn't need a raspberry pi, you could just use a motor, and set the motor to make a turn say, every second or so. If smallest value is equal to one second of time, and you run the drives right, it's a clock.
@lmarquis518

Awesome! Yours might be done before mine!
@canepaper967
@canepaper967 2 ай бұрын
@@Fightre_Flighte the problem with this is you have 10 digits on the last minute (0-9) and then 6 digits on the one before that (0-5), the hour one before that would have again 10 digits but the one before that only 3 (0, 1 and 2) for a 24 hour clock. So you would need basically 3 different mechanisms and then connect all of these together. So an arduino with separate motors will still be simpler. So when it's 0:00 AM the first hour digit would move backwards 2 steps 2 > 1 > 0 and the rest of the numbers would be redundant but at least you don't have to design a new mechanism. Edit: Actually you would need a blank digit for the first one or it would read: "00:00"
@Fightre_Flighte
@Fightre_Flighte 2 ай бұрын
@@canepaper967 That's a fair point. A blank digit (all open) could be used in place of a 0 for morning cases. It's very much in the realm of possibility, and probably sake of ease at this point, to use an Arduino to run it. Though, there have also been tried and true methods of doing the entire thing mechanically (I mean, it's literally just a clock) and done so small that you can wear it. I guess, at the end of the day, it's up to what you're more comfortable with, or how you decide to push yourself.

Recessing the the white segments slightly, would limit the (mild) issue with white being visible on dark segments viewed off-axis. (The lip of the black "cup" would block it slightly). Think of it as increasing the viewing angle width on an LCD!
