Good question. Most facilities use fixed kVp techniques and techs vary the mAs. These values are typically preloaded in the machines. There's very little manual technique setting like what was done 10-15 years ago. Techs still need to know a "ball park" for what's an appropriate technique. To determine whether technique is appropriate after the exposure, it's best to refer to a deviation index (or other exposure indicator).
