Radar Rat Race, for the Commodore 64, takes the gameplay of Rally X and puts it into a rodent context. You control a rat, who must grab all the pieces of cheese in a maze, and flee from all the other rats. Once you reach a barrier in the maze, you are automatically rotated, but you can always manually change direction. Also known as Chasse au rat in France and Katz und Maus for the German VIC-20 version
There are red ones who chase after you, and black ones who are activated when you get close to them - both types kill you on contact. When they are close, you can activate a Star Screen to block them off
The Radar, of the title of radar rat race c64, is on the right of the screen, and shows you where each piece of cheese is, although the actual maze is not illuminated, so your next snack might be further away than you think

This was the first game I ever saw on C64. I was unimpressed, but then my mate put on Cops n' Robbers. That's the game that sold me.

Aaaaaah! This explains it. I thought this game was called Rolands Rat Race but I see now that is a totally different game by Ocean. I had the cartridge! :-) I consider the "soundtrack" for Radar Rat Race and the music in the arcade version of Burger Time to be equally annoying 😂 Great video as always!❤

I apologise for the abhorrent music.. if you change it to your alarm ringtone, you'd never sleep in ever again. The absolute necessity to pounce on your alarm and instantly turn it off would be too overwhelming. But... I dont think I'll be trying that. I might have to quit work altogether haha 😇🕹️👌

This is the first game on C64 I played. I didn't have the computer myself, but my cousin's friend had one. It was somewhere 'round 1983 and the game was most likely a pirate copy as they always were here in those times. This video brought back a lot of fond memories.

And now I've got "three blind mice" running through my head, so thanks for that! Ever stop and actually think about the lyrics? It's actually rather grotesque. What did those three blind mice do to warrant having their tails cut off by the farmer's wife? Why is the farmer's wife such a sadist?
@CheekyCommodoreGamer

Yeah I should have put a disclaimer on the video about the droning soundtrack potentially haunting everyone for the remainder of the day... or, in some cases, the past 41 years. The farmers wife was an evil cow 😇🕹️👌

This was a pretty straight port of the VIC-20 version, so it doesn't take advantage of various C64 features like sprites. But the original version was good enough already, so why not? Got it out the door quickly.

One of the first games to be released, probably one of the easiest to straight port.. thank god the programmers became much more technologically talented from the following year 😇🕹️👌

I had 'Lander' as one of my first games for the c64. It wasn't called Jupiter Landed though, and it was on tape. Jupiter lander looked better though because of that velocity meter.

The was one of the very first games I ever bought for my C64, along with "Jupiter Lander" if I remember correctly. I enjoyed the game (because I enjoyed Rally-X in the arcade) but the first thing I always did whenever I played it was turn the volume all the way down on my 8" black and white TV. That was all I had for the first year or so. When I inherited my sister's color TV from her room things really opened up, and then when I got a 1084 monitor for Christmas, it was a whole new world.

@@CheekyCommodoreGamerCan you remember the first time you heard exceptionally good music on the C64? For me it was via a demo called "Ripping Yarns" that allowed you to play tunes from about a dozen different games. "Rambo First Blood Part II" also comes to mind. Martin Galway was one of the best!

@@CheekyCommodoreGamerRob Hubbard is one of the greatest of all time. I saw an interview with him years ago and he was talking about how it was back then developing music for the C64. He said that the developer would tell him what kind of music, how many tracks and how much RAM he'd have to work with. He said one game (can't remember which one) left only about 200 bytes of available space for the player code AND the song data but he was able to do it! Very talented guy. Some of the tunes coming out of the demo-scene now is incredible (as well as the visuals of course!)

Nice review 👍 It's a charming game and I guess pretty ok for being very early, however it really doesn't show off the capabilities of the Commodore 64 with the chunky scrolling, excessive flickering, basic music and small play field. I thought the good old C64 deserved a better conversion, so I made New Rally-X 64, it was a fun project.

4:26 Well, Mel Croucher did think of that for his game 'Deus Ex Machina' (also released for the C64) by having a separate audio cassette to synchronise with the game. So, yeah, technologically wise, Radar Rat Race could also. :p
@CheekyCommodoreGamer
@CheekyCommodoreGamer 10 ай бұрын
Think how many other games could have used a bit of synchronised infusion... especially the very early 80s games. I bet remaking them with a new soundtrack and nothing else would amazingly revitalise them 😇🕹️👌
