Doctor why the does shaped like bell curve is it due to heel effect or patient also does distributions is it related to thickness and contour and atomic mass unit ? Or is it because of the x ray beam geometry

Hi @Peator! The bell shape arises due to the prominence of scattering and penumbra effects near the beam edges compared to the center, which leads to energy depositions outside the beam width.

Why is the formula or CTDIw is 2/3peripheral and not 4/5peripheral? Why only 2 edges are considered and not the 4 edges that surround the center circle of phantom?

Hi Alex! Using only 2/4 edges makes sense as the CTDI phantom is symmetric. If I had to guess, I would say this was done for the sake of efficiency, making CTDI measurements quicker in the clinic.
