Radiation therapy is HARD. A young woman's radiotherapy cancer story in Sweden.
Malin & Tom
Yep, cancer radiation therapy is hard. No cancer treatment is easy, whether it's radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or surgery, but this week we're fighting the radiation therapy battle. Colorectal cancer treatment in Sweden is fantastic, and we're blessed to be surrounded by incredible doctors and medical teams, the prognosis for our colon cancer is positive, and that's allowing us to stay positive.
Malin's colon cancer symptoms have eased since the beginning of her cancer treatment, so hopefully by the end of the radiotherapy and chemotherapy cycles, things will be really looking up. There are many different ways to tackle colon cancer treatment, our journey starts with radiation therapy, then we move on to chemotherapy, and finally an operation to remove the cancerous tumor. Having rectal cancer at a young age is a definite battle, but we're getting there one step at a time.
This week is a bit of a round-up video, we're at Linköping's University Hospital in Sweden to start our radiotherapy treatment, and then we start round 1 of chemotherapy treatment. Join us next week for a full chemotherapy vlog.

Who are we?
------
We are a young 'Swenglish' adventure family, that consists of Swedish Malin, English Tom, and babies Charlie & Isabella, who are half and half. We love all kinds of adventures, including travelling around Sweden and beyond in our little budget family campervan, and we're currently building our dream campervan project.
But right now we’re focused on one thing: to be free of cancer. We've been on the journey to recover since Malin received her colorectal cancer diagnosis in late 2022.

I don't have a question that feels appropriate. I'm here for support. By you showing us your cancer story I believe you're helping others going through it...and those of us who are terrified of cancer. I just want to give both a huge hug. Please know, even though we've never met, I care. 💞💗💚

Hi, I’m Mindy (55), from Minnesota, USA. I was diagnosed with rectal cancer 5 years ago after getting my first colonoscopy. I had to have an iliostomy for a summer while I healed from major surgery. I can tell you will just do what you have to do to get rid of this awful thing. You have a terrific family, and that will help you immensely. Best wishes to you! ❤

I’m pulling for you. Pulling, as the say in Boston, wicked hawd. You have a great deal going for you. A family who loves you. That said, I was 33 when I was diagnosed with that form of cancer. I hope this gives you hope. That was 29 years ago. Had chemo, radiation and then surgery. And then months of chemo. I wish you all the best on this journey. God speed.

I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2021 also in my 30’s. Gone through chemo and radiation. The radiation will make you feel fatigued, so go easy on yourself and just take naps whenever you feel tired. You are doing amazing. Sending you lots of hugs and much love. Xx

Fellow cancer fighter here. I was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form on bone cancer called Chondrosarcoma. I’m a 40 year old mother of one (5 year old daughter). I know the physical and mental warfare you’re enduring right now. But you have lots of years left- mark my words. You are a woman, a mother, and a warrior. We can do this. Sending you support and a huge hug from Michigan. 💙💛💙💛💙💛

I just found your channel and I am so sorry you’re going through this. I also just got a cancer diagnosis in December and am about to start my year of chemo, surgeries, and radiotherapy as well. It’s such a gut wrenching journey and I hate to see others on the same path. But I’m grateful you are sharing so that other people like me can know they are not alone in this battle. I know it’s easy to say “ stay strong” “stay positive” when that’s the last the thing you want to hear some days! I don’t want to “Be positive about cancer” I want to scream and yell and cry sometimes. But then I also get up and know that the fight, that I didn’t want, has only just begun. I hope that you can find peace and comfort in the days ahead and that your treatments will be effective in ridding your body of the cancer. Thank you again for sharing your story. ❤

I’m so sorry that you’re going through this journey as well and I really hope that all your treatment goes well. You’re so right, you have to “stay strong” but this is a fight you didn’t choose to take. You have to go through it but it’s not always easy to “stay strong and positive”, when all you want is for it to be a bad dream. I’m confident you can do it though, you just have to focus on one day at the time, one hour at the time on the worst days. But you can get through it! 🧡

Be kind and gentle with yourself. Sometimes it may feel impossible to move through to the next moment, but the moments will eventually stack up and you will be on the otherside of the treatment journey. You and your precious family have got this and will kick cancer's butt to the curb. If possible, having a massage the day after chemo may help tremendously. If possible continue with a massage every week through Chemo treatments.

Having spent many, many happy times in Sweden I feel as though the Country is my second home. Malin, you have a tough and crappy journey ahead of you and I hope so much that you will get through it all and eventually be cancer free. The way you both come across from your videos is so natural and genuine. Thankfully I have never had to face a cancer diagnosis myself, but I am sure that the fact that you are sharing your experience of treatment and all it involves will be an enormous help to so many people who are going through something similar. I will be following your videos and I am sending you millions of positive vibes from England, that you will make a full recovery and be able to get back to your normal lives.

I am SO sorry, that you have to go through this horrible cancer journey 😢 But you Seem like a really positive girl, and a fighter. ❤ I am hoping and praying, that you get through this rough patch, and that everything gets better, once you finish chemo and radiation 🙏🏼 I Think you are so right, in just taking one day at a time. That’s all you Can really do. When my dad went through chemo, he slept for ages. One day after chemo, he literally slept for 24 hours 😮 It is rough, and I really feel so sorry for you ❤ Seems like you have all the support you need. ❤ Good thing that you are at home, must take some of the stress away. Even though I know, that you would get a great treatment plan in the UK also. But there is just something about home, once we go through life’s rough and hard times. 🙏🏼 All the Best, and “safe travels” on the journey ahead ❤❤❤

Hi Barbara here ,what a good idea to take the children along and there,s a nice area for them to play.Hope the treatment is going well for you Malin? My husband had 7 weeks of radiotherapy and he said that it was worse than 24 hours x7 days twice of chemo but every cancer has different treatments and every person reacts differently. You have spring coming soon. and with a bit of luck you might be able to start to get a night or two in the van, even if its local to you it,s still a change and and a different view from the window,we found that if your having a good day drop everything and enjoy the day again it dose,nt have to be anything big but even a picnic in the van that,s parked outside your own house is a change.Take care xxxx

Wait! I do have a question: *_What country are you receiving treatment, and is it costing you money?_* I'm in the USA - Portland Oregon...in many states if one doesn't have insurance, the cost of treatment ruins them. Just the cost of prescriptions alone is insane.

We’ll definitely answer this in detail in the Q&A video because it’s an interesting discussion, but yes we’re in Sweden, and yes it’s essentially free. We pay 200SEK (just under $20) per appointment, but it’s capped at 1200SEK per year. So the most we pay is around $120 in a yearly period, which is of course very different to the system in the USA.
