+EposVox I agree. But I'm starting to think that whenever The Workshop asks a question, "Does ____ matter?", I should just read the title, assume the answer to be "no", and move on.

That's the #1 rule of headlines in general. In like 95% of cases, if a headline asks a question, the answer is No.

+EposVox This exact video shows and proves nothing, because its poorly done. I like Linus and his videos but if you want to bust some myths about watercooling you need a serious system, not this AIO toy. I don't literally hate this whole "Does it matter?"series.
@EposVox
@EposVox 8 жыл бұрын
The majority of users are only going to be using AIO coolers, so this is the most generally-applicable use case. Yes, custom made loops would potentially be a different scenario, but the whole situation would be different in the first place. The general application is still valid here. This is as "serious" a system as most viewers will ever get to, in terms of watercooling.

Logic would say YES, keep air temps lower for MBOB cooling and GPU coolers. Just built a 6K$ computer for my son and he argues that well that is the way the CPU cooler was made, pull into the case. So we have 5 fans into the case and 2 out???? WHY? Take any advice from a guy that built his first computer before the wheel was invented? (me) yeah I loved DOS! LOL

@tgmforum fan configuration matters if you're liquid or air cooled. The only time fan configuration wouldn't matter is when there are no fans in the system, and if there are no fans the cooling would be considered passive.
@DerbyMods

@tgmforum while you're correct in calling that out, the idea still stands that you need to worry about airflow and fan configuration no matter what cooling system you have.

The one irk I have with these tests is they do not seem to test (correct me if I am wrong) when the GPU is also at load heating up the air inside the case. As would that not potentially make it better to pull cooler air from outside the case? Would there be a way you could test that Luke?
@G_Kaz
@G_Kaz 3 жыл бұрын
There is a lot wrong with this test to be honest. One BIG thing is what you mentioned GPU, the GPU they use is a blower so most of the air is being exhausted outside the case compared to what most people have which is an open air GPU which exhaust hot air into the case. BitWit did a very detailed video on the fan setup and gpu difference and there is a BIG difference between position kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rrRxgNuLzNzalac.html&ab_channel=Bitwit
@LRM12o8
@LRM12o8 8 жыл бұрын
You should do tests like this in a small case with bad airflow rather than in a huge case with almost infinite cooling options like the master case. Also it would have been interesting to see, which config is best for the overall temperature inside the case (GPU temp & mobo temp), assuming you'd only have the rad and one 120mm fan for ventilation (probably doesn't matter in the master case but with a small, poorly ventilated case it might make a difference)

I really appreciate you guys doing these workshop videos. They answer a lot of common questions people would have when it comes to the added features of certain computer products. They also answer a lot of the more detail-oriented questions when it comes to certain computer configurations. Especially when we don't have the ability to test it for ourselves. Definitely keep these types of videos going when possible. The only thing I would consider is testing a few more scenarios in these videos if you can. I know you guys are busy, but for this video I would have very much liked to have seen what happens when the rad is front mounted. Also in the power supply video, if you could have kept things constant for the 80 plus ratings, for example all 80 plus gold psu's, then make a separate video based only on the 80 plus ratings then that would help people get a much better understanding of power supplies as a whole as well as give you guys more content to create. I know there are a lot of different ways to test these things, but if there were a few more controls as well as a couple of added scenarios that people may be considering then these videos would be just that much better in my opinion. That's not to say it didn't answer questions I had though. It still helped a ton and that's why I felt compelled to even say anything simply because of the potential this particular series of videos have.

Cool. I am building a truck and have the radiator mounted where the spare tire was. Tilted up around 10 degrees to get air out. But almost completely flat similar to your setup. I have my fans mounted above the rad pulling UP through the rad in a effort to have any derbies stuck to the underside simply fall, be blown away when moving, or lightly pressure washed away when the fans are off. I was unsure how well this may work as it seems everyone mounts there fans below. But after seeing this I am confident it will work as intended. Thank you

What you did is perfectly fine. Linus actually recommends it in his videos. It's a PITA to clean the radiator when the fans are pushing through the radiator.

+Jazz Greiner My experience says otherwise. But then, I am running an HD 7990. basically a 500watt heater inside my box. turning my radiator fans from exhaust to intake makes close to a 10°c difference when gaming. Creating a baffle to help the 7990 get fresh air instead of recycling hot air dropped GPU temps from 98°c to 79°c.

how about the age old "order of your water cooling loop" thats always fun. maybe you could try pump>GPU>CPU>rad>res / pump>GPU>rad>CPU>res / pump>GPU>small rad>CPU>small rad>res. mix it up a bit, go pump>rad>rad>CPU>rad>GPU>res. may need a beefy pump for that one

Why didn't you monitor GPU temperatures when pulling air in to the case? I'd like to know if the reason we all exhaust our CPU's warm air out of the case has any truth behind it, since cable management didn't.

because the modern gpu have extremely efficient coolers that are unaffected lol, seriously you gpu can affect the temp but it can't be affected , personally i prefer to have the fans as intake just to avoid having the warm gpu air affect the cpu(my old school full tower was built before front mounts!)

With the GPU not providing any thermal output into the case (GPU is idling and has a rear exhaust cooler), the difference might be negible. But what about a top-blower cooler installed on a hot GPU (R9 390X, Fury, Titan X, 980Ti) running at 100%. There should in theory be a noticeable difference in cooling performance between push and pull configurations of the radiator mounted fans.

+methosgaming In my case, I always have my 2 FuryXs pushing out, since they legitimately could cook an egg. You could burn your hand on top of my case. Love this but this really really depends on the fans and on the rads as well. I have my front set in pull exhausting out of the case, i have my side 360 pushing case air thru the rad with 3 fans pulling air out so both are exhausting out. Please do one about how the exhaust or intake radiator fan set up will effect gpu temp or other components. Recently I got a g1 gaming 970 and I have a Gtx h100i as exhausting out the top which in turn is making my CPU a little hotter, as it is pushing hotter air through the radiator. It would be entertaining to see if maybe an intake on the front or top will change the temps.

+Kevin Solway i tried that once. it's just going to overheat slowly, but steadily. radiators are just super terrible when used passively. but with just a tiny bit of airflow they start to work.

I'd like to see what would happen if you staggered the quad fan set up, so the back set closest to the cpu pulling up and the two closest to the front pushing down. Best way I can explain it.

wow the comments are filled with picky people complaining about this being a useless test, guys these videos are very informative for people learning about computers. Just because you know the results, it doesn't mean everyone else does too, some people are just learning about PCs and would like to know these things.

from personal experience, the last time this actually made a difference for me was when I had no pressure optimized fans and I had them above the rad pushing air into it. I moved the fans to under the rad and it seemed to create more pressure as they became a lot louder and dropped my temps from 70c to about 40c

I'd like to see the impact of RPM, can 4 fans run slower (and so quieter) and maintain performance? Also how would a hot graphics card impact the overall case temp? Feels like dumping a lot of heat into the case would be bad without extra exhausts

You only benchmarked the CPU, this doesn't account for the GPU heating the internal air. Using warm air from inside the case to cool the CPU will be worse than cool air from the room.

It was good to see that there is that three degree difference though. This test has good control, but I'd imagine you can squeeze another few degrees with that extra three by improving the intake in other parts of the case. All that extra airflow on the radiator exhaust needs something pushing air in as well. At the least you'll be getting positive pressure and not sucking more dust into the case.

I appreciate you trying like every single config possible. So you mentioned the dust situationi (thank you so much; one of my main concerns) but did you say 'no' dust gets on the fans? only on the rad. Thank you LMG for all your work and great vids.

Possible questions: 1. could these different configurations have different noise levels ? 2. could these high end fans be too good to make a difference while other fans might not ? 3. Can you do a workshop videos aimed at noise minimizing scenarios in general ?

Im a noob at watercooling, so these may be stupid questions: Push is where the front side of the fan is facing the radiator, and pull is where the backside is facing the radiator, and push/pull is where on one side the front faces the radiator and on the other side the back is facing it, right? Also, I'm looking to get an h80i v2 for my i7 6700k, and will it perform better than my current phanteks ph-tc14pe? Final question: I heard that its not worth it to do a push/pull config on a watercooler like the h80i v2 because it isnt dense/big enough to make a difference worth the money. Is that true? I also heard that h80i v2 comes with 2 fans already so even if its a small difference i can still push/pull.

To be honest, I am not fond of these videos. Between something like Scarpyard Wars or 7 Gamer 1 CPU these Workshop videos have somthing like a filler characteristic to them. I know they take a bit of time to make but most of the questions asked were answered years ago, even by yourself. If you need "fillers" why don't go back to Unboxings or something like the "LED Lighting for Video", or "HOLY SH!t"? I like Luke as much as anyone here but the workshop videos don't do it for me. Just to be clear, it is not Lukes fault, it is just that the Workshop episodes have nothing for Viewers who are following you for years. Love you guys Greetings

how would these configurations affect other components like a graphics card? if you pull air down through the rad, would that increase the ambient temp inside the case, increasing in turn the temp of other components? or would the hot air from the gpu going through the rad be less able to cool?
@foxracerdrew
@foxracerdrew 8 жыл бұрын
Just out of curiosity, was the gpu working 70%+ Load? A hot gpu can actually have an impact on cooling performance if configured for exhaust over intake. That said, it shouldn't be more than a few degrees.

Would there be a difference in temperature if you're working with a smaller case and a high GPU usage in terms of blowing air into the case through a radiator or out? Or would it be the same result here albeit maybe higher temps on the CPU?
