I remember it so clearly. 7 years old, eating breakfast & mu😮m put it on just as we were coming down the stairs, half dressed. It was brilliant & Tony has never changed, his format is still catchy & even now, Saturday, my day iff we still listen to him with soubds of the 60s. 😅 Awesome.

I wonder what he makes of the way listening has changed? Back in those days it was easy - a record or a radio, and there wasn't that much choice of radio either! There was no legal commercial radio for some absolutely baffling reason, and I even remember Mrs Thatcher telling the country in the early 80s that there wasn't enough advertising demand to pay for more than a few commercial stations, in the largest cities. You can't believe how conservative (with a small 'c') the UK was until around 40 years ago. I recall commercial television being fairly new still and my rather posh mum saying it was "common", and we wouldn't be watching any of that lowbrow rubbish. Our mum had ITV detuned from our rental tellies by the engineer for years, and I think it was around 1969 before we were actually allowed to watch it due to my taking an interest in television and tuning the DER rental telly in to ITV. It sounds like insanity today, but it wasn't an unpopular way of thinking among people brought up during the war.

First voice heard on the day, Kenny Everett (he did the test transmission jingle package) followed by Paul Hollingdale, then Tony. First record played was Beefeaters which he still plays now, by John Dankworth, first chart record was Flowers In The Rain, followed by Massachusetts by The Bee Gees.

I remember the birth of Radio One as well. What a change, for music and for the country as a whole I think. In one day the BBC, and the establishment it represented, went from an institution that was more or less resistant to pop culture to one which celebrated it. And they did it very well, putting together a first rate pop station from day one.

The Radio 1 Breakfast Show was where a large chunk of the needle time record ration was used each day. It was probably the only show on Radio 1 and 2 which had very little tapes or off record music such as studio recordings or orchestras/bands. 7 hours of needle time per day was the limit, and I bet close to an hour and 45 minutes was used each day on the Breakfast Show.

Needle Time restrictions crippled BBC Radio 1 from its very first day on air, and continued to ruin it right up until the stupid and unnecessary restrictions were finally lifted in 1988.

@@DagenhamGilly Yes, and as I said, crippled Radio 1 from being able to play pop music fully during the course of the day. Radio 1 had to simulcast with Radio 2 for almost 12 to 13 hours per day out of the 5.30am - 2.00am broadcasting day.
