Radio Reactive One -- "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers (and others)

It seems every reaction channel must first do a reaction video to "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers before it can enter the world of reaction channels. So, in order to fulfill this obligation, I give you my attempt to provide "the reaction video to end all reaction videos on 'Unchained Melody.'"
Indeed, the Righteous Brothers did the definitive version of the song, but have you ever heard the others that came before it? You will here, along with the flip side of the Righteous Brothers' single, where "Unchained Melody" was SUPPOSED to be the B side of the record. That's right, it was the other side of the record that Philles Records released to be the hit. But radio stations and the record-buying public had other ideas.
Enjoy this trip down memory lane.

The righteous Brothers were playing for a charity in Newport Beach California 1 year before Bobby's untimely death. We heard Bobby singing while we were playing a tennis mixer next door. We stopped and went to their venue after their last song, couldn't help myself being such a fan, gave Bobby a big Texas hug. Who would have thought that he would be dead in one year, unbelievable. I still get chills every time I hear him sing, especially this song, thank you Bobby.

Bobby Hatfield sang with a unique voice, that voice is called a countertenor. Most opera singers can't boast of that. I think he had handled four octaves without the slightest problem. There were and still are few singers with such a vocal range.

Try listening to John Lloyd Young (actor who played Frankie Valli on Broadway first, and later in film). He did justice to this song. One of mine and my husband's favorite. I was lucky enough to get through to a radio station during the lunch hour on Valentine Day and requested it as a dedication to him. I told him I was going to do it so he would listen to that radio station.

This live version of multi-academy award winning composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret of their classic ballad "Unchained Melody (1955)." Was done (58) years ago by the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers in (1965) on the NBC "Andy Williams Show." It has been considered as the greatest (live) television performance ever in the history of television. Awesome, insightful and informative reaction to the greatest live performance ever! This was the best reaction to "Unchained Melody" of all reaction channels. Andy Williams said it best-"Beautiful" Priceless!

I was born in '53 and had a sister 10 years older (she was on an episode of Dick Clark's Bandstand). I heard all of the versions and the flip-side of Unchained. Loved them all, but Bobby's version is ingrained in my heart and brain and soul. Being a singer myself (with a very wide range from bass to 1st tenor), I've sung this quite often in my early years. I could hit those notes then, but not anymore. That said, I could never come close to Bobby's unbelievable smoothness. Unchained Melody, though written many years before, was written for him. God rest his soul. He is missed.

Loved your walk through history on this song. Growing up, I remember hearing the single played on the radio with the ending just being instrumental rather than Bobby's high notes.. I have read that Phil Spector was very scared to release Unchained Melody since the so called "British Invasion" had already begun and they questioned who would want to buy this throwback to the "Crooner " era? I'm glad they made the decision to let it ride! Thanks!

Thank you very much for "Unchained Melody". The first version I ever heard I was 12 years old and 'Head over Heels" in love with this young lady who was the same age as I, 13`. She gave me a 'friendship ring' to wear and I had to hurry out and ask my Mom for some money so I could reciprocate! She wore the ring, as I wore her ring for the Summer of love for us. Then, at the end of that summer (1955) she asked for the ring back since I was moving out of state. She broke my heart! That song has stayed with me ever since (I'm now 81) and I still vividly recall the song and all of the memories! It's haunting and beautiful and I still love the song, all versions. However, the Righteous Brothers and Al Hibbler are my favorite renditions! God Speed, all of you!

When I was doing research on the background to this song, I came across how the song came to be born. Alex North and Hy Zaget, Alex had the music but no lyrics, so he went to Hy, he turned it down saying he was too busy. Alex kept @ him until he agreed, and as they say " the rest is history ~ Although a producer wanted the word " unchained" in the lyrics, Hy said no, he placed it in title ~ I truly appreciate some of the facts you gave on the background. Yes, Bobby had a head cold and sounded amazing regardless, with his mom in the audience. A friend said the bite of the lip was indeed because he knew he " nailed it " ~ RIP Bobby, we miss you

I would like to add another comment. I was 13 in'55 and I remember Roy Hamilton's version most of all, not so much the others. But I was 22 when I saw and heard "Bobby's Song" as I call it on Andy's show Amazing. I forgot all others. The beauty of his voice, the absolute control, the passion and feeling. The thrill of those last notes. The ease of his performance, no strain at all. Some people thought he was lip-syncing! 20 notes, 3 to 4 octaves. Never anyone nearly as great, never will be. All Bobby needed to do was stand there with a mic, sing that song, and a whole nation of women fell in love. Me included. NO Falsetto! natural high register, a counter-Tenor. But the first one was really haunting and sad. On the other side of Bobby's great talent is "Summertime" live on a tv show, opening with both Bill and Bobby, doing a funny repartee' before Bobby sings. As to the orchestra behind Bobby, it was the house orchestra, and complemented Bobby's beautiful voice perfectly. And Bobby loved the acoustics in that NBC studio

At about 16:45, hearing the Righteous Brothers in duet, I only can say, Bill's voice is the bass making a woman's subdomen vibrate, while Bobby's accentuation adds "the shiver". Unfortunately for Bill. But Bobby's lightness of vocal range with "Unchained Melody" is something completely different. To see his smile reaching highest tones performing that song ... Effortless ... That's the difference.

I remember riding in the truck to the elevator with grandpa and he said don’t touch that radio. It was this song that played and I understood right then what love was. I seen it in his eyes. And he still bought me a 5 cent bubble gum and we shared a pocket full of peanuts together.

Thank you for an informed, intelligent analysis -- it added a richness to a magical performance by Bobby Hatfield. You obviously love music, and you share your stories well. Love Bobby's lip bite, too!

I like the Al Hibbler version too. But Bobby really does own it. It is truly a magnificent masterpiece. A killer song.

De verdad que esta melodía fue compuesta solo para ser interpretada por Bobby, nadie como él, de verdad llega al corazón!!!

1965 and I was 17. I missed this solo by Bobby for some reason. I have no doubt every girl who heard it fell in love with him as I did hearing it at 74. What a timeless romantic, beautiful and perfect gift you gave us Bobby. RIP and I am so happy you married a Linda Bobby Lee. Linda Lee

I remember watching this when I was 12 years old. This has to be one of the best all time live performances. Bobby's voice is like a musical instrument. Time stood still for 3:26. Case closed.

I don't know if that song was made for Bobby or if Bobby was made for that song. Perfection.

All of the versions have instrument gaps, but the Righteous Brother closed the gaps using an R&B style, it's what makes it unique.

I believe that song was such a hit because it hit a chord in everyone's soul because we all need to feel loved and to love. Even animals and plants need to feel loved. God is love and our creator of all this world and everything in it and so no wonder all His creation needs love and to give love. RIP BOBBY.
