I worked at RS in the 80s too. Had a VCR come back, customer exactly like Larry, did not understand how to operate the varactor tuner, refused to read the owner's manual to learn how. I hooked it up to the store TV antenna and walked through the steps as I tuned in a couple different channels. The guy wanted his money back anyway, so got it. Had another Larry, who returned almost everything. Only thing the kid ever kept was blank Beta video tape. Everything else, he would play with for a couple weeks, then return. He did the same to another RS a couple miles away. It must have been the manager of that other RS that talked to the DM about "Larry" chronically returning stuff to both our stores. The DM called me and told me that he had called the kid and told him not to shop at RS anymore, because of his abuse of the return privilege.

I probably saw this video when I worked at radio shack. We often had people who did not resemble Larry, wanting to buy large Mach 3 speakers just before weekend and wanting to return on Monday. They used them at a party and returned them. It was always an ugly return!

The hardest ones for me was when the customer tried to return something from a franchise Radio Shack. Many times, we didn’t even sell the product in company stores.

I had forgotten all about returning franchise store items. With you mentioning this, I now remember being on the phone with my district manager and him walking me through how to take back something that wasn't our usual store stock from a franchise store, simply because the customer was so disgruntled and had been on the phone with district. If I remember right, it was a really nice handheld two-way radio, and he initially wanted me to send it somewhere via UPS, but I asked him if I could attempt selling it first, as I lived in an area that was BIG on shortwave amateur radio and CB enthusiasts. I was able to sell the radio in under two weeks. It was pretty sweet! I think I sold it as an Express Order catalog item.
