Its been a while since I uploaded a new video so apologies to my Patrons and subscribers. A lot has gone on recently with the sad passing of my Mum, 2 new puppies and major hard drive issues. Luckily I didnt lose any footage.
I have already released a later video as an appeal so thats a bit of a spoiler for those that have seen it. This was a mammoth repair job that had lots of different bits that needed sorting. Follow the series as there is a lot of these radios out there and sooner or later they will develop the same faults.
Dont forget to like and subscribe. Also check out my Patreon page Patreon.com/radiocruncher and website radiocruncher.com www.paypal.com...

If the tuning control knob is a bit of a problem to get hold of, with the fingers, get a piece of double sided tape stick it to the side of the knob and get a plastic top from a bottle and stick it to the tape, that way the length of the tuning -knob is increased and can be controlled better.

Hi Radiocruncher, thank you very much for this . It encouraged and helped me to repair a continuing problem with my example of the 2010D; the infamous ERROR 3. This is usually caused by the battery connectors not making proper contact with the radio due to either the contacts on the back case have bent, corrosion, lost connections to the two AA computer batteries and a need to clean some circuit board solder connections to the batteries. I did this and so far; so good. Your video also warned me not to dig any deeper into the innards of the fragile, elderly, but still great radio. The Rolls Royce of shortwave portables. 73s

I have 3 and they all work. One I Bought non working about 10 years ago. Had very low audio. I froze the output chip and it came to life and has worked ever since. Mind the internal rod anttena wires, they are short and fragile as are the flexie's.

Hi Simon. Yes those antenna wires were a real pain. I ended up taping them on temporarily with insulating tape after soldering them back on a couple or times. Strange that freezing your output sorted it permanently. Thanks for watching

Hi Mike. I was wondering how you had got on with the RP18 and assume the resistors did the trick. The Sony certainly has been very tricky to work on. I did a restoration on a blue R200 recently for a customer. A bit unusual as it had woodworm! The Hacker VHF Herald is a lovely set if that's what you have and well worth restoring. I'm sure Jon will get you sorted soon as his replica knobs look great. Keep up the good work and thanks for watching. All the best Graham

Hope all is well your end Graham and that you are not working too hard! :O Thanks for sending the very nicely made PP9 battery (terminal) clip. However.........er.... you've made a mistake when you wired it up. You've put the black wire to the positive and the red wire to the negative (I might be going completely mad, but I think this is wrong). My Sinclair DM2 multimeter, which I have been restoring, has popped slightly. No harm done, as we all make mistakes, and (fingers crossed) I can still get my multimeter working again. Please, if you have made a batch of these clips, check the correct wires are going to the right terminals. Warmest regards Wayne and Nina.

Apologies if I got them the wrong way around. I am so used to making the battery packs now with the stud as the positive. So I should have wired the female connector as positive. Please let me know directly if you need any bits that I make and if you need a part for the multimeter let me know. Kind regards Graham

Bless you Graham and thanks, but I'll sort the multimeter, it can't be anything too serious. The display on it lights up, but I'm not getting anything out of the probes. There is only one chip on the board that is completely obsolete, but I don't think it's that. Anyway, I'll let you know how we get on. Keep up the good work. Wayne and Nina.

My 2010 has a weird thing. The manual tuning stops working as soon as I press one of the front panel buttons. I have to take all memory cells (double As) to make manual tuning again, but as soon as I press one front panel button, it goes back stopping again. And the function button has no function at all. I have been a shortwave searcher for all my years, but without manual tuning these days, such radios have no function at all.

That’s a shame. It could be an issue with the capacitors as these sets are getting old now

I stripped it down and found it was a little dirty inside. Now when I plug in jack plug with wire to it on Shortwave its great but on long wave and medium wave it causes the radio to be dead, without the jack plugged in MW and LW are good. But plugging in a wire always used to make MW/LW better. What may have gone wrong please?

You will have to get the service manual and trace the components back along the Jack plug traces. There may be a resistor gone open circuit

Hello I bought my ICF2001D in Fiji, January 1986. Mint condition. Everything works. The radio as been sitting on my night stand for some 30 odd years. One thing, the volume is a little stiff. I don't want to take the back off. That would be pure suicide. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you Wayne in new Mexico

Hi Wayne. There is a product called fader lube that works well. It would have to be taken apart to be done though. There is a 2010/ 2001D group on groups io. If you join that then there is a repairer on there in the USA that should be able to help. Good luck, Graham

@@Radiocruncher Hi Graham Thanks for the info., this 2001D is a complex radio. Like a Rolex watch. Just don't want the mob down the street working on it. For it's time, the 2001D was a pretty darn good advanced radio. It wasn't cheap thought. Even at a duty free shop. Cheers Wayne

@@Radiocruncher Hello radio cruncher Yes, these radios are truly great radios. The radio sits on my nightstand now for 36 yrs. Eventually I'll get it serviced. As you know. This is not the kind of radio you have the mob down at the corner work on. You may agree. The antenna is the weak link in the chain. Not as sturdy as it could be. However, the Antenna stays folded all the time. Cheers Wayne

I have the same radio. It is switched on but the buttons, including the dial does not respond. It works for a while then they all cease responding. You are stuck at some frequency but cannot move anywhere. Do you know what might be the issue?

@@Radiocruncher Thank you. Another owner looks to have experienced exactly the same issue I am experiencing: "When I turn the radio on, it starts at 150kHz. I can then tune up all the way to 30 MHz with no problem, receiving station all the way up the dial, as long as I do all of my tuning with the tuning knob. However, as soon as I press any button (except the battery test button, which performs as it should), the whole radio locks up entirely, and goes to 150 kHz and the a8 memory position is listed. The tuning knob no longer works at this point either. If I turn the radio off and then turn it back on, the radio remains frozen on 150 kHz, no button works, and the tuning knob doesn't work either. If I take all the batteries out, and leave them out overnight, then put them back in the morning, I'm back to square one above - the radio works fine with the tuning knob, but as soon as I press a button, everything locks up".
@Radiocruncher
@Radiocruncher 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like this could be a complex fix. Start by replacing the caps. There could be an issue with the flat film cable not seating properly or damaged. Hopefully not as these are irreplaceable
@RenoLaringo
@RenoLaringo Ай бұрын
@@alparslanesmer4251Idk if you still have the radio, but if the board is somehow warped or the a8 button contact is failing so that it would make permanent contact, would you not end up with the radio not wanting to tune anywhere else and be blocked in that function (a8 engaged and holding)? Might be stupid or naïve, but that just popped in my mind, reading about your experience. Not even sure what I say makes any sense. If you try manual tuning and then, in the process, use a8 to save any chosen frequency, and the radio blocks in that position, then that would probably confirm a sticky contact on a8. Or dismiss if it doesn’t and the radio gets back to 150, and blocks from there. Then I have no idea.
