Fun Fact: 3:41 as the villagers are waving to the camera, look at the small tree on the left behind the striped pole. He's escaped as they turned their backs.

This film certainly draws from the original, 1973 movie known as "The Wicker Man," with its references to the Maypole, the participation of children in the horror of life in the Model Village, and the importance of the harvest (The Speared Boar, the apples, the sacrificed animal baked en croute). But it's much more than a simple horror film or remake of a cult classic. Rather, it is an allegory for the banality of evil, the dangers of conformity, the turning of perceived outsiders into scapegoats, and how evil, not perpetrated by monsters and sadists alone, can be masked by seemingly meaningless activities and pleasantries (it may even come with a pat on the back). An example of groupthink, where conformity and narrow self-interest are valued over the welfare of others; a complete moral collapse. And for me, the Inspector represents one's conscience. As he dutifully moves through his checklist, he becomes increasingly horrified by life in the Model Village, with the sight of the man locked behind a door painted with a red cross, the woman tied to the stake, and the children decorating the gallows with flowers. But, in the end, he is sacrificed by the villagers for his conscience. Don't bother with "The Wicker Man" remake starring Nicholas Cage. He sacrificed his craft a long time ago for the big bucks of Hollywood. Vapid.

+Ceili Jane well i think its playing into pagan sacrifice rituals and ho the inquisition was just a similar sacrifice ritual, the wicker man depicted rituals that still go on ceremonially in may queen festivals, in america its things like homecoming queen. They all go back to worshiping fertility.

+マクドナルドカイル In the 1973 movie, the Inspector is a policeman investigating the disappearance of a young girl. For me, in the Radiohead film, the Inspector represents conscience, apparent through his expressions of shock and appall by what he has seen in the Model Village.

Stay in the shadows Cheer at the gallows This is a round up This is a low flying panic attack Sing a song on the jukebox that goes Burn the witch Burn the witch We know where you live Red crosses on wooden doors And if you float you burn Loose talk around tables Abandon all reason Avoid all eye contact Do not react Shoot the messengers This is a low flying panic attack Sing the song of sixpence that goes Burn the witch Burn the witch We know where you live We know where you live

It's simply talking about the times back then.. When people were walking around looking for "witches". "Stay in the shadows, cheer at the gallows, this is a round up" That's simply saying the way people had to be because they didn't want to get assumed as a witch. Of course, people would "Burn the witch" because they don't want any of their witchcraft to do any harm to them. There's always a reason for worry as it says in the third stanza. And all in all, know that you yourself might not be as it may seem. Sometimes, being in the shadows would be better off than being considered as a witch. (This is only my interpretation. there are other ways you can look a it)

Evgeny Petrov oh sure. This song has meaning, it's very much literal: witch hunts. But in modern day context. The whole song is about groupthink and mob mentality; the concept that people put together act differently as a group than as individuals. To some extent they lose their individuality because they are reluctant to say something that doesn't fit the groups status quo, and so they conform to be the same as all the other group members. You end up with stuff like witch hunts, people wanted to blame disease on something because they had no real remedies or preventions of it, so they blamed 'witches' and basically slaughtered people who weren't 'normal' enough, like older widowed women. Nowadays we do the same to migrants; blame them for taking jobs etc and so 'hunt' them (deporting, closing borders etc). The lyrics of this song 'Stay in the shadows / Cheer the gallows' are calling upon group members to not challenge social norms and too support prosecuting those who don't. Hope that helps you understand it :) It is of course just an interpretation but it fits well and it demonstrates a very important message.

I think I mostly agree with you. Thanks. Yes, the keywords in lyrics quite confirm what you say. English is not my mother tongue, so I suspect that some phrases have under surface meaning. Actually, it was quite funny when guy at the end of video 3:55 was like "Damn, what the hell was that?!"
