People make fun of Radiohead and call their music depressing but when you think about it, it's really comforting to know that other people feel these emotions too, and I think their willingness to grapple with the side of life that pop music tends to neglect in part explains their improbable success. I recommend Pyramid Song, A Reminder, and Lozenge of Love by them.

This song it's not depressing to me, it's more like... Transcendent, if that's a thing. My favorite Radiohead song, I've been living like this for a while, wanting nothing but disappearing, feeling empty and fading through the years. Ironically, this song calms me down. I cry every single time I listening to it... That's how I know I'm still alive.

Marilyn Manson said this song saved him from suicide. David Bowie commented that this song is one he would have liked to compose but couldn't. Thom York wants to be remembered for this song. Stop me this is a great song that full of different emotions to the listener, some depress others comforts them. It heals me and lifts me up.

My understanding is that this song was written after he was thinking about quitting due to stress and expectations. He then had a conversation with Michael Stipe of REM about dealing with it all and Michael told him that he just disconnects when he gets overwhelmed and imagines himself outside of his body.

@@StreetHierarchy it’s a strategy. A strategy a lot of ppl who’ve been traumatized employ. It’s a way of protecting yourself. It can be protecting you from the trauma or traumatizing situation, but I think it can be used too for non trauma related situations. So if you have severe stage fright or are an introvert needing to be the center of attn it could be used to separate yourself from the thing that you fear or makes you uncomfortable. In that way it’s a strategy to prevent stress or anxiety.

Kid A came out around the time I was entering the deepest depression I’ve experienced. All I know is that Radiohead’s music really really helped me get through some dark times.

@@snuppssynthchannel: I was raised by two very different parents. My Father is and will always be ‘classical rock’. My Mother grew up on Soul and R&B from the sixties. I Keep Close To My Heart Both Influences, As They Both Instructed My Own Education To Reach Further Back. For My Money, ‘Obscured By Clouds’ is Pink Floyd’s greatest album, and I’ve many memories wrapped up in hearing it. ‘Kid A’ , ‘O.K Computer’, and ‘The Bends’ deserve that treatment, because without such a wonderful musical base to start out from from both My Parents, I wouldn’t have been able to recognize pure beauty, craftsmanship, talent, and art. It is also due to them that I possess a love for Jazz, Country, And Classical Music as well as World Music.

I have asperger syndrome which kinda dampens my emotions during everyday experiences. With listening to radiohead I found a way to experience/drain emotions from myself.. so in a way it's like therapy to me.

The song is about when Thom couldn't handle fame, so he called up a friend of his, and his friend said "Just say, I'm not here, this isn't happening." Such a sad but beautiful song.

It wasn't that Thom couldn't handle the fame. The band were writing Kid A during a long and intense period of touring. Thom would go to these places he had never been and wanted to explore, but couldn't because they had to pack up and head for the next show. This happened a lot during that time. This eventually sent Thom into a dark place mentally. He called Michael Stipe to told him to say a mantra to help him. That mantra was "I'm not here. This isn't happening."

Radiohead is my all time favorite band. Ive seen them 8 times and their shows are like a religious experience. You should try anything from "In Rainbows"..... maybe Reckoner or Weird Fishes/Arpeggi.

Radiohead really get to the deep pit of the soul. I don’t think any of their songs haven’t moved me in some way. I think everybody at some stage has got to that point of completely numbness and not really here. I don’t know how I feel about songs that go to those depths - they communicate something very human but they can also exasperate those emotions - especially if you allow yourself to listen to them often.

What makes this song beautiful to me is it has moments where lightness and joy pour in. Like at 4:25, and again at 4:43, at 5:02, at 5:20, at 5:49, and then maybe the most beautiful moment of the song at 6:17. One one of the things Radiohead is masterful at, is juxtaposing joy and sadness against each other in their songs, for the biggest possible emotional swings.

I had this song looping through my head the whole time I was graveside at my Mother's funeral. I don't remember anything from the time I sat down to the time I got up. Radiohead as a whole is full of ethereal melody with insane beats. Some find Radiohead sad but I feel that they key into emotion as a whole. The melodies they put down are directly from my head. I live to see them again live.

I think the chorus "I'm not here, this isn't happening..." was a coping mechanism for panic attacks, suggested to the singer by a friend.

The friend was Michael Stipes of REM and the panic attacks were happening during the "OK Computer" tour in 1997 after the album catapulted the band from "hey they are cool" to "THESE ARE THE SAVIORS OF ROCK". If you have not watched "Meeting People is Easy" it is a documentary about that tour. A must for a Radiohead fan...

This coping mechanism is called dissociation. It's an extreme form of emotional escapism. People wouldn't use it if it didn't work, but it's very unhealthy. By escaping your emotions, it stops you from being able to process them.

Aw. Girl. This is the kind of reaction that breaks the internet (in a good way), but be healthy if you're not currently feeling good. Radiohead is amazing, but not great for depressed people. If it was not for Radiohead I dont know how I would have dealt with my wifes sudden death even though its supposed to be sad their music has helped me grieve through some tough times it has a cathartic quality to it that other sad music does not have.

Radiohead is incredible for depressed people I think, their music such as this song opens you up to these emotions. It lets you confront them but in a comforting way that gives you relief from these suppressed emotions you never want to deal with. It grabs you by the hand and lets you know everything will be okay despite the bleakness you see now, there’s an underlying sense of hope woven into the fabric of despair with Radiohead. They’re a hauntingly beautiful band.

Wow! Jumping in deep on my favorite band! I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever. The words aren't quite as sad as you think. Back in Radiohead's early days they were touring as an opening act for R.E.M. who were huge by that point. Thom was backstage talking with Mike Stipe, the lead singer for R.E.M. and he asked Mike how he dealt with singing in front of a crowd of 70,000 people. Mike told him he imagined he was somewhere else, and that it wasn't him standing on the stage in front of everyone. Thom took the advice and turned it into the lyrics for this song. Add Jonny's string arrangement and you have this gem! So hauntingly beautiful. Keep going with Radiohead, please! Maybe try "Jigsaw Falling into Place" next. Peace from SF

This is best listening to it without images in the dark. I cried the first time I heard it. If you've ever suffered something devastating then you can relate to this song. It's about shock and coping in the moment.

I wonder why I don't feel anything like this when listen. It just calms me down, lets me swim in its beauty and lets me breathe. Rather than sad or happy, this song brings me back to the bottom, to a neutral zone.

I have to say this. I have been watching Radiohead reaction videos for years snd your reaction was by far the most heartfelt reaction I have seen yet. I could tell when you were starting to cry that you felt this darkness that Thom Yorke was projecting and I felt it as you did snd almost felt a connection with you even tho I have never met you. Thank you for this. This was fulfilling to me, to see someone who was finally able to get it. Not many people get it if you know what I mean. You shouldn’t have edited out what you were going to say after you started crying, us viewers we actually want to see that we are drawn to that we want to feel the reaction through you as we did again like the first time we heard the song. We are constantly looking for that feeling again and just now I came pretty close to that again. Thank you again God bless

I had picked up this album in the summer of 2001, liked it immediately, and internalized several songs off the album, including this one. A few months later - on 9/11, to be specific - this song kept playing over and over in my head as I watched the unfolding horror on TV. "I'm not here. This isn't happening...."

I was listening to a lot of radiohead when I was making music and living in L.A. It was an experience. Kid-A, Ok Computer and Amnesiac all have very similar vibes to them musically.

It's about how when the band all the sudden blow up overnight. Going from playing a show with 400 people to 30,000 and he lost it and didn't know how to preform. He contacted Michael from REM and he told him to put the blinds down and pretend he's not really there. ❤

I remember diving into work at Seattle's emergency operations center on 9/11. My brother had called from NYC to tell me about the first plane. I got in my car. I remember praying it was an accident then NPR broke in to say the second plane hit. I knew enough for the moment. We knew Seattle was on Al Queda's radar. I flipped to KEXP to collect my thoughts. John Richards said "I can't say anything" and then played this song.

I listened to this album on one of the first major US broadcasts, driving around until the album was done. It was shattering. It grabbed me at the beginning, but this song solidified it: Radiohead is a great band and I will listen until they start to mail it in.

“ I’m not here, this isn’t happening” are words of advice Micheal Stipe of REM gave to Thom when he was asked for advice about coping with the stress of constant touring. “Just close your eyes and repeat these words.” That’s the origin story I heard.

It's about dealing with things that are hard to handle sometimes. Coping. Talking to yourself, getting through hard moments in life, and coming through the other side. It can be pretty melancholy or "dark" at times, if you're not in the right mood.

I think the part where the string arrangement becomes warped is the most panic inducing thing I've ever heard in a song. Every single time I hear it, I get goosebumps and am filled with horror! I always thought this song was about out of body experiences! Being a ghost is another interpretation I think is accurate! I think it's more broadly about not being able to identity with yourself though! Absolutely brilliant song 💯

It's about pressure, not being able to take what's going on in your life and trying to be alone in your own head to escape it... I'm not here, this isn't happening... for me it was after a severe breakup and also another time after the loss of my mother. The connection to this song was a huge outlet and I love radiohead because of it.

What was really fascinating to me what when the ultimate climatic dissonance come at the end, she didn't flinch, like in some other reaction-videos to this song that i've seen. She didn't move or react at all. The pain and chaos went right through her soul. And she took it without fear. This is true bravery. An ability to accept these things that life gives us.

To me this song is about being in a situation in which you cannot cope, in which it's so overwhelming that it's easier to pretend you have disappeared than face your reality. I think of a rape victim or an abused child who has lost all power and just wants to disappear.

India, your comments after about the 8:30 mark were pretty close. Radiohead fans can correct me if I'm wrong but, I think the song was written by the singer after touring and he was just at a point of exhaustion, emotionally and physically, questioning his life, being in the limelight, etc

He asked Michael Stipe from R.E.M how he handles the overwhelming moments of fame. And Michael said he just pretends like he is not there. It is sort of a dissociation to get through impossible moments I think.

Alot of the lyrics on here are about a dream he had in Ireland. Makes sense given the "float down the liffey" reference.

Radiohead were not prepared for the sudden fame they had after OK Computer came out... or the grueling tour schedule and pressure that came with it. This song was born out of that time and fortunately, they got through it. For many years now they've been recording and touring without being tied to a record label and they seem much happier now.

The intent of the song; or at least by the singer is a account of a dream he had. The lyrics are the literal interpretation of what he experienced in his dream. But ultimately this song like many other Radiohead songs are usually left to the listener and what they interpret through the lyrics and instruments as far as what the song might mean.

To me it sounds like he is invoking his disappearance until 5:31 in this vid where he really feels he succeeded. 5:49 is like a "there is no going back" moment and at 6:00 reality (all the stuff he's escaping from) threatens still to lurk in his nonexistence bubble
