I was stationed at RAF Neatished from July 1992 to May 1999. Worked in the old R30 before being sent down to the R3 to ply my trade. I volunteered for a season at the museum that has been built in the R30 building. Many a happy moment had in this old site when I was a Scopey.

Brought back some memories! I was an Air Cadet at annual camp at RAF Coltishall in 1984 and we had a trip to Neatishead. We did go in to the bunker and I was amazed at the coverage of the radar as you could see all of the UK.

I was stationed there from 1984 to 1991, working in the R30. This is where the operations wing were based whilst the R3 bunker was being refurbished. God knows how many times I opened the main gate shown at 4:45. The R30 is the big building to the right of the gate.

Wow awesome video ! I remember when I was a young air cadet in the very early 90s, I visited RAF Coltishall, they had a deep underground bunker called Border Radar, we went down it, saw loads of RAF personnel looking at radar scopes, it had a massive display screen indicating aircraft presently flying at that time, it was amazing to see but its a Shame I was only too young to remember everything in more detail, this video brought back my memories of that experience, you will have to revisit and get further access if at all possible Ian ☺

Border Radar was a civilian air traffic unit, co-located down the hole at RAF Boulmer. The R3 bunker at Boulmer is identical the the Neatishead one and remains operational.

I used to be stationed at RAF Neatishead and lived at RAF Coltishall, I was on the trials team for 3 years before it opened in 74. Coltishall never had a bunker and there never was a Border radar. You must have visited Neatishead after they moved back into the R3 bunker. The bunker had been unused for many years following the fire in which three firemen lost their lives. Memory can play tricks.

Hi guys great video of RAF Neatishead brings back loads of memories of my RAF service as was a radar operator in the late 70's to early 90's. Just some info for you the 2 small radars one was the s259 which had units deployed to ascension island and Stanley airport during the Falklands conflict and the 600 which was deployed to Mount Kent when the hostilities ceased. Keep up the good work.

Comment form my Dad who was stationed there in the 50's: The radar gear which I worked on all appears to have disappeared. The peculiar thing to right of the guard house has replaced the larger type 80 which I spent many nights with sleeping between the generators. We had to stay there in case the system tripped and so would be woken and on hand to run it up again. No wonder my hearing is not too good now; the noise there was deafening.

Hi, Guys, good video but it's not true that local TVs would buzz when the large green radar turned around. I lived as a child at Chapel House across the field. The only interference was on local radio when tuned into UHF - a very LOUD BEEB would be heard when the radar pointed towards the house. What you should have done was go to Barton Turf located through the other side of Neatishead village. It is part of the station but little is known what its purpose was. The radar station has changed over the years. Located at the back of the station used to be a line of rocker radar dishes going up and down which could be seen clearly from the back access road where you found the trees being cut down. During the 60s and as a child, lots of smoke or unburnt black diesel plumes could be seen coming from the chimneys around the bunker dome. I think this was from generating electricity. At the entrance to the museum to the right, a large white radar dish used to hum as it went round. It was sent to another radar station for display during the late 70s. RAF Neatishead was closely connected to RAF Coltishall which had the Lightning interceptors during the 60s and later the Jaguar. Lastly, the Large green radar dish was going to be removed but the council put a preservation order on it otherwise that would have gone in the late 70s as well. Andy

On the video at 10:23 the gate you got to was the alternate entrance. I recall it only ever being used during exercises. The green door was the entrance to the R3 bunker where staff used to go through a turnstile gate to get our id cards. Then it was down a flight of stairs to a blast area. Then a long corridor down to another blast area followed by another corridor to the NBC area where you were supposed to go through in the event of an attack. It was then you got to the crew rooms and the first ops area.

This is a Type 84 radar which replaced the type 80 which was 50's technology. The type 84 had a crude organ-pipe height finding capability (which can be seen on the dish feed) whereas the type 80 could only report range and bearing.

The room at 14:45 looks smaller than I remember. Imagine being a WAAF officer on watch in there at around 2 to 3 am. On your own. A w**ker of an engineer decides to gain access to the void below the control room.Suddenly he pops up inside a display plinth and grabs your ankles!!! They never did find out who did it, but they had a very good idea ;-) (I had a bit of a reputation during my service career)
