It was one of the most extraordinary aviation events in post-war Britain. The sight of a low flying Hawker Hunter jet, twisting and turning down the River Thames before flying right through Tower Bridge. The risky manoeuvre - performed in 1968 - cost the RAF pilot his job but half a century on he says he still remembers it like yesterday - and has even had a painting commissioned. ITV News London's Ruth Zorko reports.

When you're so badass and so batshit crazy that your name is the first that comes up when someone reports on someone doing something incredibly dangerous and spectacular... Pollock!

As an 11 year old I was crossing Baylis Rd. Waterloo, SE1, being taken out of Johanna primary school (before it was a hanging offence) to the dentist by my mum. We got to the corner of Frazier St when this howl and a whoosh came overhead, the plane seemed as if it was only at the height of the block of flats, it was probably higher.

I have never seen this KZfaq film before and it is very nice to see Al as he is now wearing the I Sqdn tie giving his view of the event. Al if you see this, we are very proud of you and hold you in great respect. I give talks at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum and of course mention you as I stand beside one of our Hunters we used in The Suez War. God bless you You are the spirit of a true Royal Air Force pilot. Regards from all at Tangmere.

I remember the publicity afterwards. How we cheered! Wilson also killed off the TSR2 but the electronics lived on in the Jaguar. When the 50pence piece was introduced it was called a Harold - two faced and many sided! Not much changes!

Alan Pollock flew from RAF Tangmere on this momentous occasion and I was station there at the time but it was not talked about and was not common knowledge until much later.

I hindsight, Britain was not only making defence cuts, but it was also throwing away, what could well have been a very lucrative, jet aircraft industry. The 1970's saw many nations (especially in the middle east and north Africa) become major buyers of combat aircraft. It could have been a valuable contributer to the British economy, easing the pain during a period of decline.

A True Brit not forgetting human being! Just like the RAF pilots who fought and won the Battle of Britain. An RAF of which nearly a quarter of the pilots who participated in the Battle were from other countries, including Poland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, France, the United States and South Africa. All to be honoured regardless of nationality.
