Grande Raff!!!

Laura Brannigan did a way better version
@beyondwisdom58804 жыл бұрын
I’ve been binging Laura Branigan’s music lately and find RAF’s version to be more club oriented. Both sing the song really earnest and approach the material great. Laura’s version has this cold, robotic, yet mysterious vibe to it. It is intriguing. RAF’s version has an energetic bass punch that catches you off guard. Both versions are great. Love them both. 🥰😷🔥🎸🎼🎧

The original version is that of RAF.
@neildarling24043 жыл бұрын
This is a very astute assessment of the two versions. Raf’s version has almost a menacing, nihilistic tone. Branigan’s is similarly ominous, but there’s a despair in her voice that betrays some shame in her abandonment. Perhaps the difference lies in the masculine/feminine perspective?
@ShehrozeAmeen3 жыл бұрын
@@neildarling2404 could be. As far as I have found, the lyrics are constant in both versions. With Raf, it could be that since the "night" - I'm treating it as a character here, since it does have metaphorical elements indulging the protagonist ("City light, painted girl", "Wearin' white as you're walkin' / Down the street of my soul", "So I guess I just believe it that tomorrow never comes", "So I make myself believin' that this night will never go", "You take my self, you take my self-control") - is a constant entity, and eventually you have to indulge the night, the male decision making is more inclined towards the inevitable, the whole "if you can't beat them, join them" approach. But with Laura, truth be told, it could be argued that the female is literally using the exact same lyrics, and pointing out not that nihilism but the very uncomfortable submission to these whims, and that it is made worse because Laura - excellent singer that she is - sings it with that nihilism upfront. What I'm getting at is you empathize with Raf, but you relate with Laura. Raf is implicit - which is a European thing if you consider it - whereas Laura's interpretation is exceptionally explicit. Raf is a guy telling his mate he's been wrecked, and you'd imagine it happening in a club or a bar. With Laura, you imagine it being anyone, walking back home, if they're living in sinful districts. Hamburg's Reeperbahn and St. Pauli are examples where people actually do live there, and that's the red district. You can apply both versions of the song there, and they both would be apt. For all intents and purposes, the song is immortal. Lyrically it is dope. And in the hand of a good artist it really is able to leave a mark. Raf did that, so did Laura.

Likely because Laura Branigan recorded and released a cover of it. He might have had to forfeit any American release of it in the process. There would have been no sense of Branigan recording and releasing a cover of it if his record of it was available at the same time in America to buy as a single.

But you know, slightly misheard lyrics definitely help create later versions of many songs. This is how art and language progress, and endure, through the ages.

Back in the days I didn't appreciate this song, I kind of rejected the italo disco (Italian 80's adolescent speaking here). Now I think this is a great song, with the most catchy singing lines of that decade (and possibly even after).

I've never heard of this version in America. Big props to RAF for creating this song.

It was never released in America. Likely Raf opted for just having Laura Branigan cover it rather than have an American major record label pass on it or having some independent record label in America give him a paltry fee for it.
@stef80732 ай бұрын
@@RocStarr913 Probable. LB had already covered a song (Gloria by Umberto Tozzi) that had in common with Self Control the same author (Giancarlo Bigazzi). So they already knew her. They must have thought it was easier to monetize this way.

It was back in 1984, a shot of life, while I was riding my old yellow Kawasaki along with my girlfriend, sat right behind me. I was the owner of my life, the owner of my GF's heart and that's what was all about life to me. A lot changed since then and I'd trade most of my things to get all that stuff back. We were young folks. And the worst thing is that we realize it when it's too late! At least, we can say we lived that marvelous decade which is still remembered and envied by those who didn't.
