I have a basic map of the Aerodrome in the mid 40s showing the runways , a chap that researches crash sites sent me a copy and an entry from the log book relating to my mother's brother's crash site. During a night training flight the Hudson that he was a crew member clipped a tree during landing and most of the young men on board were killed. He was stationed there with NO.6 OTU Coastal Command and was killed 17th April 1942. RIP Uncle Clifford! Lest We forget!

I remember going there as a kid in the 50s to watch an air display with my Dad. Then in the 60s as a young man I worked for the company which built more than 500 houses on the old airfield. Sad - but houses were needed to replace some dreadful old slum properties in Thornaby and Stockton. Also went to air displays at RAF Middleton St. George (now Teesside Airport)and RAF Acklington - now a prison!

If it wasn't for the pictures you wouldn't know there was an airfield there once . It seems to be completely gone under a housing estate.

There's so many airfields the same way and many going that way unfortunately.

A bit like RAF Perton, totally lost to a housing development, although in the case of Perton there are still some outlying buildings evident.
