The guy has serious OCD. Just watch how he has to go back 2 times to rearrange his towel perfectly, before playing his next serve. Not to mention the OCD rituals before every single serve. It does my head in and drags the game out tremendously, and it must get on other players' nerves too. Add to that his nearly 7 minute medical + toilet break. All fine, as long as he sticks to the time limits, they apply to every player including Nadal. That's why Denis got angry, because rafa is given preferential special treatment by the umpire, he feels. By allowing him to go over the time limit. Rafa may be the fan favourite, but he really plays with his opponents head when he does that. Shapo was on a winning streak, but that annoyance probably cost him the match.

Are you saying that before the stop-clock was introduced only Rafael, or the 'top players'' only, got leeway on how long they get before serving, for example? 'cause if that's what you're saying, it's blatantly untrue. In the instance when Dennis approached the umpire to complain about Rafael's time before serving, the umpire - correctly - pointed out the clock is on and visible to all, and Rafael was within his time. So, do say what other 'special treatments' are afforded to Nadal? Waiting with bated breath here.

The thing about nadal using the clock - he is quite consistent in that and not playing mind games such as sometimes serving fast and sometimes serving slow. he has his own routine which is quite well -documented. yes it drags the game, but it should not really affect the opponent in terms of being prepared to receive serve. for bathroom break and medical timeout - different ppl take different time, and depending on if it is number 2 etc.
@DaemonGeek
@DaemonGeek 2 жыл бұрын
Nadal definitely has his routine, and he has been around the tour long enough that EVERYONE knows it. There have even been occasions when his opponent tried to mess with his routine to get him off his game *cough* Lukas Rosol *cough*. But he is also one of the slowest players on the tour and IMO his slow play was one of the main factors behind the initiation of the time clock.
@diamondeye1305

@sabineb.5616 2 жыл бұрын
Next Generation, you are right! Nadal is well known for his tardiness and his ocd-rituals. He has been always like this, and it is not really deliberate gamesmanship. Often it hurts him more than his opponents. And especially when Nadal was younger and played longer and physically punishing ralleyes, many opponents were actually glad to have a bit more time in between points 😉 But as I said in my previous comment: the data do not support the notion that Nadal constantly took more time in between points than Shapo. Both of them took a few seconds more than the rules allow, and Bernardes didn't reprimand them - which IMO was very sensible because of the brutal temperatures. There is a reason why the umpires have a certain amount of lee way, and why the shot clock is still handled by humans and not by a computer!
@sabineb.5616
@sabineb.5616 2 жыл бұрын
@@diamondeye1305 , you are absolutely right - and Bernardes did just that! Both players averaged a few seconds more than the rules allow. But Bernardes punished neither Nadal nor Shapo - probably because of the very hot and humid conditions. Carlos Bernardes is not at all known for favouring certain players, and he has been hard on Nadal on many occasions. You can find many of these clashes on KZfaq 😉 Accusing Bernardes of being corrupt is ridiculous! I think it is much more plausible that the umires have been advised to take the extreme conditions into account.

Agree though I did watch the replay of their match; ATV only showed about 75% of it. I happened to time Nadal on his serve- I caught his first infraction which was coincidentally the one time the umpire gave him a warning. After that, Nadal often went over the 30s mark, and once, by as much as 11s. This was particularly true in the fifth set. He was never penalized for these. I did notice Dennis was making unforced errors and got upset at himself. He could have won, had he had more experience and better concentration. He missed opportunities and gave away critical points; this has obviously affected the outcome and I believe he’s pushing his shortcomings onto external distractions. He is definitely a good player and hopefully improves as he matures.

Do not underestimate the power that Rafa's OCD has over him. At this point I don't think he can even control it. Bottles neatly placed in front of one another, check. Consistent pulling out of pants, loosening shirt at the shoulders, left and right, wiping the eyebrows, both of them, cleaning the cheeks, both of them. It HAS to happen with every serve. He probably cannot play without his tics by now. So I think it isn't even a tactic anymore to wind up the opponent. It is what Rafa needs to feel in control over the game. And that's all fine, there is no rule that prevents players from doinjg their unique rituals. But there comes a point where he needs to stick to the time limit rules and Shapo has a point that when he goes overboard, the refs aren't eager to reprimand Rafa.

Yes, there’s a more than good chance that Novak would have won the AO had he been there but it was never a foregone conclusion. However, what he did amounts to cheating - lying on his forms to gain entry. He can blame it on a mistake by his team but, Novak is so meticulous about everything that I believe he would have known and sanctioned it. Also, if he loses a match, he loses and there’s no point in badmouthing other players. Novak doesn’t do that. His fans are a disgrace and letting him down.

tennis is one of the most fair sports regarding results... there is instant video to check if the ball was in or out... each player, as in any individual sport, relies on his/her performance... a bathroom here or there should not change the result of a 3 or 5 set match... tennis is also a mental game (as any other game really). Novak, Rafa and Roger are masters in that department
