Scary. That's the word that comes to my mind looking at this match. Fognini didn't pay badly. He threw the kitchen sink to Nadal and then more and still lost in straight sets. Some of the shots in this match are beyond ridiculous. How on earth Nadal reaches those balls on the run (Notice the precision of those shots from the back of the court fully stretched). And if that is not enough, he is making aces on his serve.

What Rafa Nadal did to secure the second set when it was 4-2 was some of his best tennis in a long long while. If he keeps playing like this it will be hard for whomever joins him at the final. Some of greatest and most inspired shots (that lob!!) of the tournament/year are to be found at end of their second set. Fognini had like a dozen of absolutely brilliant and legendary returns that left Nadal stumped and halted him on his tracks - not an easy thing to do. Nadal really brought in his A-game. We'll see if he maintains his ferociousness against Tsitsipas. Looking forward to that match, but moreover I'm looking forward to the Semis vs Medvedev. Keep going Rafaaaa!!

Fognini is such a gifted athlete, but when he doesn't have to move to the ball his footwork often isn't great
@teostrong6973
@teostrong6973 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Honestly, the ball just naturally comes out of his racquet faster than Nadal’s, both on forehand and backhand, but Nadal’s work ethic will make him the goat while fognini will simply be forgotten in history
@zweigackroyd7301
@zweigackroyd7301 3 жыл бұрын
@@teostrong6973 Do you think the ball comes off faster because it's flatter? I think nobody hits with as much spin as Rafa, which is one reason he's so incredibly dominant - a very heavy ball. And, as you say, he is simply a much harder worker than Fognini. That said, it seems to me Fabio has really upped his fitness in general over the past 12-18 months

@@zweigackroyd7301 A lot of people are really ignorant.. For exemple a LOT of people actually think that Del Potro, Verdasco or Gonzalez hit with more power than Rafa, when in reality, yes they are big hitters but their ball looks often faster because they hit very flat and risky. Even Thiem or Wawrinka have a more powerful forehand than these guys, but Gonzalez or Del Po are extremely dangerous when they hit the zone because of flat balls

Nadal's main weakness rn is his forehand. It's not as sharp as it should be, not deadly enough. He can produce magic when he is pushed to the limit, but it is his turn to dictate the point, he doesn't hit it deep and strong enough to win against Med or Djoko. He will already be highly challenged by Tsitsipas I fear.

Rafa's on great form, but with Thiem out, there isn't anyone left to challenge Novak on his way to the final. Rafa may eventually get to the final, but if Nole is there waiting, he doesn't have too much of a chance.

This Djokovic will have a lot of problems to win the 1/4 final, and the semis. Nadal is playing his best tennis since RG, full of power and with his left feet in order. No pain, no stress, no weakness. If they play the final, forget about a easy match for Nole.
