Canon EOS R 2020 Video Settings for LESS NOISE with C-Log: Overexpose your footage.
In this video I talk about the C-Log Video settings I use on the EOS R5, EOS R6 as well as the difference between ALL-I vs IPB Compression, how to use the Histogram, and how to slightly overexpose for video to reduce noise in the footage.
In a follow up video I will show you have color correct your C-Log footage from scratch without LUTs.
Canon Log has been in Canon Cinema EOS cameras from the very beginning. C-Log enables up to 12 stops of dynamic range, reduces heavy shadows and blown-out highlights, and provides an even better source file from which to perform extensive color grading in post-production. Internal recordings using Canon Log are 8-bit, and 10bit for external in 4k only - for today we will only deal with 8bit internal recording.
On my C200, I actually shooting Canon Log Over C-Log 3 to easily match the two cameras in post, if I choose to use LUTs they are very similar right out the gate. I just found it's a closer match.

@ hes recording with one camera, and the camera he is holding has an hdmi cable out. so he is capturing what that LCD sees. you can do it in many ways. one of them is by using the elgato 4k for it to capture everything that comes out of the camera. Once you have that footage you overlay it over the footage captured with the other camera. that's it.

Yeah that's pretty close to it. I record to an external recorder with the screen info on, with the lens cap on, - then just overlay in the NLE and I just sync up that actions. Thanks for the comment Martin!

Right on the mark, Raphael. I would add to the list log footage and large rasters. Clients want speed and efficiency more than elaborate and beautiful. If it isn't essential to the concept, move along. I use a C500, R5, an inspire, gimbal, sliders and even a steadicam. However, 95% of the time, I'm running lean and mean. -woops! I was replying to your essential gear video!

Awesome, thank you! I agree CLOG is my favourite of the LOGs - and I've worked with them all. REDCODE RAW is top for me for quality, but hate working with it, Too large and too taxing on most machines.

Thanks Rafael, great video! We’re on the same page. I had a lot of problems with noise in the past,as I was cranking up the ISO now I always try to stay near 400 ISO, also I had the 24-105 f4, but now I got the 15-35mm which opens at 2.8. I like low light conditions

Thanks for a straight to point video on clog. Love your videos. I use the same settings except for saturation because my often objects have a lot of red in them and when sun shines the reds get easily "fever" and I have trouble to render it well. So I go for 2 steps minus on saturation for those extremes. I agree its important to set the white balance correct and I go rather a bit cool than warm on the white balance when recording as its easier in post to ad warmth than opposite per my experience. Yes, I would really like to see you color correcting and basic grading and which LUTs you use.

Knowing the equipment and how it reacts in different settings or different subjects is the key to consistently getting good footage/Photos. That is why doing these tests really helps me understand the gear and how far I can push it, and trust it to capture what I want. I've heard the recommendation of overexposing "+1" before, but am a little confused about how to accomplish that. Does that mean to bump up the ISO, or does that mean to bump up the exposure compensation (keeping ISO 4000)? Thanks for your help.

Run and gun do we set exposure compensation plus 1 with auto iso ? Like clog is 400. So Iso automatic from 400-12600, exposure compensation +1?

I would like to know, if this episode was shot on the C200 in 4k and brought onto a 1080p timeline, or what camera did you use. The most Videos I have seen shot with the EOS R are looking terrible, really really bad. It´s such a downer besides being a nice tool for Photographers.

This video was shot half and half - C200 4k Clog, and EOS R 1080p Clog. All the B-Roll was shot with the EOSR (except any shots of the EOSR) -specifically all the shots of the color chart near the end. I edit in a 4k Timeline, I scale up the EOSR 1080p footage to fit the 4k Timeline, and output and upload 4k. At first, I was working with the EOS R the same way I would with the C200, and the footage would look bad comparatively, When I would trust the screen or viewfinder I could never get great footage. I feel when I used the EOSR I was using my Photographers mind. But the more I pushed the camera to find the sweet spots for shooting footage, I realized that when it's in movie mode I had to trust the Histogram more, and that is why after a bunch of tests I found that slightly over exposing I was able to produce a better image. Thank you for the great content! Native ISO is 400 under C-Log, how about regular video profile, is the native ISO still the same at 400? Some say it will be 100 under non-C-Log video mode??

I don't own the m50 and as far as I know it doesn't have a log profile and I've read that trying to force a Log profile can potentially introduce artifacting to your footage. Set the camera to a flat or neutral picture profile, and reduce the sharpening, this will help make the footage feel smoother. But you will have to bring back some of the contrast and sharpness in post. Sorry I couldn't answer your question directly. Thanks for the comment and the question!

@@JulieSchiro yes that is normal, the stock picture profiles add sharpening, clog does not, so you have to add that as well, but you can be as subtle or extreme as you want!

I always shoot C-Log - even when I push the ISO. In those cases I tend to not go as aggressive with the color grade. And add a Denoiser if it's really bad. 3200 is still pretty usable, unless there are no lights in the scene. I have found that many viewers forgive noisy footage if the shots are compelling enough. Great video but you never answered the question you raised. How do you recommend raising by one stop? There is no exposure shift option.

You are right, I didn't specify how I do it. I typically use an ND filter and open it up a bit or, I bump the ISO up one or two. It's about letting more light in than the waveform shows as ideal exposure. Thanks for watching and the comment Nick!

Correct me if I wrong. You record your EOS R menu via hdmi to Atomos then you import to your timeline, make position and transform and then change the blend mode to screen or something else? Great tutorials BTW.

That is exactly correct! I record with the lens cap on to capture black and screen it over to get just the light parts on screen. Thanks for the comment Dejan!

I mostly shoot 8bit on both the C200 and EOS R, and am careful to have exposures set properly. I only shoot RAW for bigger client work, and then I usually rent a additional C200s to match perfectly. And use the EOS R for BTS footage. Thanks for the comment!

Natural or standard picture profiles work best, but if you are feeling adventurous you can use C-Log and create your own LUT for OBS, which is what I did. so how do I over exposure? you don't explain this. when I press exposure comp, "not available because of the associated faction's setting. iso speed, canon log settings"

Hi Chopstick Man, You are right the Exposure Compensation is greyed out when in Manual Mode. And it's more of a Photography tool than a video tool. So when I say over expose it by 1 or 2 stops I am referring to opening up the aperture (e.g. 3.2 down to 2.8) or increasing the ISO (e.g. 800 to 1000). I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment!

I believe the R is rated at 12 stops of Dynamic Range. That's pretty good for an 8bit internal camera. Thanks for the comment!

Silly question but never realize before (and also a newbie)... EOS R native ISO is 400? for stills & video. I went thru the manual after seeing your video and couldn't find it.

I asked a Canon tech directly what the best iso for video was and he said 400 iso for C-log produces the cleanest images exposed properly. Thanks for the comment!

@@mohdnorazmil I start at 400 and see where my scene is using the Histogram. If it's too bright, I'll use an ND filter or adjust the Aperture. If it's too dark, I'll open up the aperture, only then I'll adjust the ISO. If I can't add lights to the shot. Don't be afraid to play with the settings, and learn to use the histogram, it's your best friend for clean images. Aim to expose properly, because if it's not, even with 400 ISO you will get noise in the shadows. Thanks again for the comment!

With the C200 I have found that C-Log3 proper exposure works really well, and no more than 1 over still works quite nice! The C200 is way more forgiving than the EOS R. The sensor is way small megapixels at 8.9 versus the 30mp on the R. So that makes for much larger photo sites to capture light. And that is why the Sony A7s3 is a beast in low light with 12mp. Yeah, it will definitely help as I show towards the end of the video - over exposing really reduces the noise in the shadows. I was struggling with it as well until I did the testing.

between the two For the price - the R - but at that price I would lean towards the R6. I am a fan of Canon, I like the lenses and the overall workflow with the files for both Photo and Video. The A7C seems like a great camera but I have not had any hands on time with it. Thanks for watching and the question!

@@ka7iopeya my main photo camera was the 1Dx mk2 - and that has a 20mp sensor. Something to consider. And since you say 40% video the 6 is much much cleaner - and no cropped 4K. It also depends if you already have lenses or not, if you have emount go with the Sony, if you have EF go canon.

you say over expose for less noise and yes that is well known in photography as well, however when you say over expose some people may take that literally and blow out the scene, you then stat to use the histogram which I always teach others to use and the peak needs to be in the middle, now just saying but if the peak is in the middle of the histogramme is that not just a perfect exposure? to be fair this is exactly what I do because relying on the camera exposure bar on the bottom of most screens is not good as this will indicate the exposure to be over exposed whilst the histogramme will show a perfect exposure with the peak in the middle. Wow that seemed long winded lol, I hope that makes sense.

You are right I should have been very specific, to expose correctly, then over expose by 1 or 2 stops. When in video mode the is no exposure bar, and histogram is not a precise tool, just a range of luminance info. I've seen way too many try and trust the image on the back screen of the camera, and it "looks" good, only to find that it's either way under or way over. So I teach them to look at the image AND the histogram to better gauge the exposure, or use a light meter. But no one uses a light meter these days ;) Thanks again for the thoughtful comment!

Hi! My EOS R in Clog on 400 ISO is HORRIBLE. extremely noisy on 400. Even 800 is less noisy than 400. I tested on all levels, and ISO 100 is the cleanest, although it still isnt pristine... Even Neutral picture profile is better on ISO 100 than clog.....😢 Can someone tell me why? Every video tells otherwise... Im not a beginner, so this camera's poor video quality is driving me insane.

Look, first of all, you should understand that white clipping point on ISO 100 in neutral is the same as on ISO 400 in log. You should try to expose as bright as you can but without clipping in neutral on ISO 100 then just switch to Log and bring your exposure back in post. But don't shoot in Log lower than native ISO, it will clip your highlights sooner

C log is confusing. Some say over expose others say don’t. I don’t know what to do. I’m just gonna go to film school lol.

C-Log in 8bit on the EOS R benefits from over exposing, cleaner image, on the C200 with C-Log 3 in 8bit you can push it a bit harder, and with C-Log 2 in 12 bit lots of room to play. It comes down to the camera you have, and to do one day of tests in different lighting conditions to understand the gear - and you'll do great in any situation moving forward. I don't know about film school... I learned so much more and practical on sets and working on productions than I did at school. I should have started learning those things sooner. Though you will meet many like minded people that you will form great relationships with that will carry well beyond school. Thanks for the comment!
