I'm a sound guy but this was recommended to me by the Propmaster and Assistant Propmaster I'm currently working with on a Warner Brothers feature. I don't know how better to say it but... wow. You totally nailed it! In 10 minutes you told a more emotional and captivating story than most of the directors I've worked with ever have in any of their shows. Mad props to you! Amazing!

As an assistant Propmaster on some pretty big Hollywood movies, I cannot possibly thank you enough for this video. It makes me tear up to watch. I can't tell you how many times people ask me "so what's a prop" and I struggle to "justify" what props are. We get no Emmys. We get no oscars. We are like the supportive friend who never gets the girl. Is kind of heartbreaking. We spend so much time being unrecognized and unsung it really gets into our heads and a lot of us have internalized the idea that we are not that important or artistic a part of the process. To see it acknowledged that we ARE is sort of jarring-- it's like getting a big hug after being alone for a long time. Thank you so very very much. Whenever anyone asks "so what is a prop" now, I show them your video. You've done wonders for this prop girl. -Melissa Harrison

Hey Melissa, I did some IMDb digging (stalking!) and you have in fact worked on a lot of big movies! :-) Can I ask, is the props department something you always wanted to get into or did you just kind of "fall" into the role? And do all properties crew need to be skilled model/set builders etc or are there roles within the props dept which simply require the ability to visualise/design/source materials for props etc?

+Peanut Turner (peanutismint) hey there. I moved out to California specifically to work in the art department on films, but I did sort of "fall into" props -- or rather I kind of fell into love with props. I enjoy being part of the active filming process instead of solely the art prep process, and props is the only art department that actually works the set (besides the on set dresser) from start to finish. I'm proud of our work but it seems that we are very often overlooked and misunderstood.

+Peanut Turner (peanutismint) and not all prop folks need to be manufacturer / builder skill sets. Props takes all types of creative people. If you're interested personally in getting into props I'd be happy to talk about the many aspects of the gig :)

I've been doing props for small theater productions (and occasionally for films) for years, and you hit the nail right on the head. If a prop fits the place & time, the audience doesn't notice because they assume that it's correct. They fail to realize that someone actually had to do research & find or recreate a milking stool from 1820. Thanks

Hi, stan give some recommendations of schools where I could specialize in props or anything in production design field, pleasee!! :( that are not to expensive haha :( I studied filmmaking but I want to do this, and I still don't know how to do a lot of things, and I have just seen super expensive masters. Is school necessary or people just learn it around?? I don't know if you still have the account, but anyway thank you!!
