In this video I install the Raijintek Morpheus 8069 on the HP Omen OEM RTX 3080 10 GB GDDR6X to try and tame the (up to) 80 C temps I was seeing while gaming (this card doesn't have a great cooler as you'll see). The 8069 added substantial cooling performance to the card paired with a couple of be quiet Silent Wings Pro 4 120mm case fans. I also used 2 Gelid Solutions PWM Fan adapters for VGA cooler fans as this card has 2 fan headers on the PCB. For the work, I used the iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit. The Morpheus 8069 was purchased from grooves.land for $144.86 but can be found on Newegg and Ebay.

This is the weirdest and intriguing 3rd party cooler I've seen. It's neat to see a heatsink instead of watercooler setup though, especially because it seems to be pretty effective. Also I just want to say that when putting thermal paste on a gpu die, it is pretty important to get it all covered. Unlike a cpu with an IHS, the gpu die is just exposed so any spot that's not covered will get hotter. BUT yours seemed to spread evenly enough to keep it stable so good job!

I have an XFX Merc 6800 XT. It's about 8 months old since I got it, but after seeing this video, you made me consider butchering the card and void the warranty for that nearly 20 degree reduction. Wow

I've just ordered one of these to replace the awful blower style cooler on my Gigabyte RTX3090. I've had to underclock it by 50% to keep the noise levels tolerable. I'm hoping that this will be a good solution. My case is windowless, to aesthetics don't matter at all to me. Going to have to choose fans and adapters though.

might as well go for noctua chromax fans for them? or if you're on a budget maybe the deepcool fk120's would be a decent option, since the arctic fans have this weird humming sound at 1000rpm+

Video is much appreciated. I wanted to jerry rig a 8068 (10 series variant) on the 30 series a while back. A lot of custom work but appreciate the company offically releasing new one. Question, would you try Noctua A12x25 for accoustics and performance?
@dockbock
@dockbock Жыл бұрын
I know I bought those expensive Be quiet fans, but I don't have the disposable to pick up fans that I don't need at the moment. Performance wise though, the Silent Wings Pro 4 have a peak cfm (cubic feet per minute) of 84 and a static pressure of 5.31 mm H2O at 36.9 dB while the NF-A12x25 has a peak cfm of 60.1 and a static pressure of 2.34 mm H2O at 22.6 dB. (That's from the manufactures websites) so with the higher rpm you will get more fan performance at the tradeoff of considerably more noise. Granted the Silent wing pro 4s are not particularly audible from within my case, and also you really don't need too much fan anyway.

I am thinking about doing the mod as well with my HP 3080ti. Right now i simply have 2 P12s strapped with zipties on the original cooler. I'd like to know if you tried to keep the original metal bracket or is it to thick to fit under the VRAM Cooler of the 8069?
@dockbock
@dockbock 10 ай бұрын
My structural bracket had to go because it was passively cooling the VRAM chips and mosfets (poorly) and the 8069 would not physically be able to fit.

Maybe I should have gone this route, considerably cheaper than liquid cooling, although I went cheap as possible on this loop I have yet to build, waiting on pump reservoir, which for whatever reason hasn’t shipped after 6 days

I was so excited when this finally dropped because my Gigabyte Gaming OC cooler is loud as hell and barely keeps my 3080 in the mid 70s in an air conditioned room, but 170$ for a heat sink!? Got damn that’s double the price of the old one!
@dockbock
@dockbock 9 ай бұрын
Steep, it cost half the price of the card I put it on, but there isn't much option other than custom liquid cooling which is also pricey.

Interesting improvement. My Zotac 3080 heatsink seems pretty good though, I run 3 92x25mm noctuas on it and at 40% (~750rpm), they can keep it the core at 80°C while pulling 270W. (Probably ~60% for 330W.) So your stock cooler doing as high as 78°C with those insane 3500rpm fan speeds seems really bad? I don't remember but I think if I ran the stock zotac fans at 100%, the card would stay below 70°C 🤔
@dockbock

Yes, the stock fans only seemed to be giving diminishing returns on cooling past 2000-2500 RPM.

Why did you need a adapter for the fans to install it on your GPU? isnt it a 4pin PWM anyway?
@suspensefulmusic9794
@suspensefulmusic9794 10 ай бұрын
GPUs have a different connector than the mainboard PWM fan header. Its the JST PH 4 Pin connector. The sigal is the same. But with a program like Fan Control, you could let the the mainboard and software control the new GPU fans. Especially because the middle fan of the HP card cannot be controlled directly with afterburner.

Can you turn the fans down to ~1000rpm and still play under 90c?
@dockbock
@dockbock 11 ай бұрын
The short answer is likely yes. Fan blade geometry and blade number will vary results, but with the Silent Wings Pro 4 (at the lowest I could make them in Afterburner 1250 RPM) adequately cooled the GPU die under 100% load to 76 C with the hot spot 86-88 C. The VRAM however ran around 94-96 C, which is still in spec of the 105-110 C throttle limit. I also forgot I had a 180 Mhz overclock on the core and 500 Mhz overclock on the memory which does, of course, increase temperature.

The temperature drop probably had more to do with the original thermal paste being dried out. However, looks like it'd be a worthwhile mod for the noise alone 👍

Really suck the HP 3080 card has a hard BIOS limit of 320W and minimum fan speed of 30%. Ironically undervolting gets you more power/frequency headroom. I own the card i deshrouded it and zip-tied noctua NF12s on it connected to the mobo and controlled by Fancontrol v144 in the OS and undervolted to 0.9V @1845mhz . It no longer sounds like a jet engine but still maxes out the noctuas at 1500rpm and can reach 84C. The default cooler is built on min-maxing off the fans aka minimum amount of cooler mass to maximum fan speed just to barely hold it in spec. The morpheus 8069 at 145€ could buy you a better cooled card. Its cool for tinkerers but the price to performance isn't really there.
@dockbock
@dockbock 3 ай бұрын
This is a fair point. For now the cooler will serve for the longevity of the card but it also adds the cooling over head for power modding the card (though I will need take a look at the VRMs to see how much they can take).
