I’d like to share a song I wrote with you. “North Platte Soldier” He fell in love his senior year, and she became his whole life. And he knew shortly after, he wanted her to be his wife. Over dinner at Penny’s Diner, he got down on one knee. He said “I want to spend my life with you. Will you marry me”? He felt called to serve his country, ever since he was a kid. Even if it meant going off to war, just like his grandpa did. He thought he owed his country, and he wanted to do his part. And little towns like North Platte, raise kids with great big hearts. The day had come that she’d been dreading, and they’d have to say goodbye. She tried to be strong for him, but she broke down and cried. They cherished every moment, and hung on for dear life. She was scared, but she was still so proud, to be a North Platte soldier’s wife. They took pictures in front of the the Golden Spike Tower. Watched the trains in the morning light. They talked about the soldiers of the past, how they went off to fight. To her, he wasn’t a number, but a blessing from above. And she knew that she’d be missing her North Platte soldier’s love. Well he fought in two deployments, and somehow his life was spared. It helped them to keep going, to know how much each other cared. He was thankful to be back at home. And grateful to be alive. And most of all, he thanked God, for his North Platte soldier’s wife. They took pictures in front of the the Golden Spike Tower. Watched the trains in the morning light. The Golden Spike Tower was built with a combination of donations and an "occupation tax" on overnight lodging within the city of North Platte. Yes, it is tax money, but it is not local property or sales taxes. It is funded by the visitors it and our other attractions and events draw to North Platte as they stay overnight. While the Union Pacific doesn't own or operate the property, the UP foundation has donated heavily to it, and, though it could opt out because of the "contract" nature of the hotel rooms it rents for train crews, the Union Pacific does pay the occupation tax as ongoing support for the project, which amounts to many thousands of dollars each year. Overall, the GST attracts thousands of visitors to North Platte each year, including from almost every state in America and many countries around the world. The money these visitors bring to town are "first dollars", new money being infused into our local economy. The economic impact of this major tourist attraction is much greater than can be seen in the revenue earned by the GST from admissions or the proceeds of the occupation tax.

Tax payer money no mater how you cut it. Waste of resources. I am big train fan but I am willing to pay my way. If it was that good it could stand on it own two feet. But since you can even pay ops cost not that many people interested.
