I love intermodal trains almost as much as I do mixed freight. Modelling Alaska Railroad is fun for me because their intermodals are only single layer TOFC or COFC due to the high winds they see in Alaska, no well cars at all.

Thanks for the inspiration, i recently upped my intermodal train length (from 100% 48 foot wells to one 53' well and one 5-pack 48' well with two frontrunners) and was looking for a possible intermodal terminal without all the hassle of a full-sized one.

Hi DJ, It's funny how the different railroads had different nicknames for TOFC and COFC services. Like you mentioned, I began hearing the name "Jet" and "Trailer Jet" during the Chessie System era. On Conrail they were "TV" trains, which was short for Trail-Van. On the Southern Pacific they were called "Pig" trains, short for Piggyback which is the most common name for TOFC and COFC trains. The Southern Pacific truck trailers even proclamation "Golden Pig Service" on the side of the trailers. As time marches on I think the traditional Piggyback train is being replaced by the double stack trains as more shipping companies have adopted containers over truck trailers. Another neat video DJ thanks for sharing and yes, I love the drone footage. Cheers, Rich S.

The Illinois Central referred to their intermodal trains as "The Pigs", until the CN takeover. The Chicago and Northwestern referred to their intermodal trains as "Falcons". To this day on the former C&NW you can still frequently hear Union Pacific dispatchers refer to the Hot Intermodal trains as "Birds".

@@djstrains DigCom Designs (Digcomdesigns.net) is a site that sells PDFs of trailers and containers. They have a lot of different styles and companies you can purchase. You buy the PDF, print on card stock and assemble the containers and/or trailer. The PDF is $5.95 each but you can print as many as you want. The more you print and build the cheaper they are. They are not 100% like a plastic container/trailer but especially on a train they look really good, not to mention they are really affordable. Also they are light so they don’t weight down a full train. They do have samples on their site to try them to see if you like how they turn out before purchasing them. I highly recommend them. during quarantine they furloughed EVERYBODY and combined 4 trains! stone, ballast, intermodal, mixed freight. 23,000 tons, 3 miles long. with two GEVO engines on front, no DPU. I voiced my opposition. Didn't know if we could make it, but we did. Had to set middle of train off at one yard, and work another, and then outlawed. This is why I don't speak highly of CSX. GREED.

I've actually been trying to do a lot of intermodal modeling..... However, Ok have to disagree with your est of how much space is required..... Due to their very nature you have to have either an aircraft hangar or something similar on size to be able to run an intermdal train of any size in HO scale. A typical modern flat is a foot, spine and well cars start at 16" long.,to over two feet each......plus a foot or so EACH per locomotive....
