The World speed record for a steam locomotive is still held by the Pacific LNER class A4 named Mallard at 126+mph. Pacific locos were fairly common on express passenger services here in the UK.

I like how you bought the switcher, that was my choice for a 3rd loco too :) Log cars take 1 game hour to load, they will always load instantly if you skip an hour. It's unloading at the sawmill that takes hours, especially when the stored logs gets up to 100%. You don't have to be too fussy about where you stop the passenger cars, so long as any part of any passenger car in the train is inside the trigger space all the cars will load and unload. This is good to know when you get up to 3 cars :) Don't bother doing signals in single player, nothing is going anywhere until you start it and set the route and they will stop before they do anything bad, signals just mess with your AI drivers e.g. they won't go through red signals even if you need them to, and if they go through a yellow signal they will crawl at 20 mph all the way to the next signal. Most people by now have worked out that pointing at some track and hitting ctrl-F will place a flare there, not many people seem to know that if you point at some track and press shift-? you'll see the curvature and gradient.

Personally, I found the Switcher to be great for pottering around, on very short runs - I use mine at Bryson for all the local freight work, and shunting the return loads - I did initially use it for log runs, but found it incredibly thirsty for 25mph runs. The G16 mogul appears to be the best starter, and mine is still doing the log runs. The T17 ten wheeler, has a very light coal and water load (compared to the mogul), but its small drivers also make it a good mixed traffic loco. The reason the Atlantic is so good for passengers, is the large drivers make for efficient speed runs - not so hot for heavy freight.

I would've used the 0-6-0 for the logging job and the 2-6-0 for passenger work with the 4-6-0 doing regular freight duty.

After the update that came out yesterday the log cars take ages to load, it will pay to split the loading between tracks 1 and 2. But the tip I really thought of adding was go into the settings in the company screen and change the time to 1:1. It makes logs load and unload slower but removes all the time pressure from the other contracts, well worth it.

What I do is sell the caboose near the begining as its not really used. More cash for selling and clears the bypass track.

if the ai takes control you can set it to max speed he wont over run the track speed
