Long Train Knocks Down Signal ... This long FEC mixed freight Train had to go slow as it had to wait for 2 Tri Rail trains to cross before it got the green at Iris Interlocking and then knocked down the signal! He was headed East at the E. 10th Ave railroad crossing which is just a block away from Iris (where FEC and CSX tracks meet in Hialeah, Florida ).
Please help me with travel fund to document abandoned rails in other states and cities. All I ask for is $1 or $2 monthly.

That "knock down the signal" expression is a hangover from the days of upper-quadrant semaphores. Proceed aspect was a vertical blade and when the train past it, it would "tumble down" to horizontal, which was the stop aspect. Railroad workers whoud say the train "knocked down the signal", and the term became synonymous with a train taking a signal from green to red. On another note, never cut around the gates like the idiot in the white pickup did. The train on your side could mask a train on the other track approaching the crossing, and you could stand a good chance of being hit by it! Wait for the gates to go up first. Remember...safety first!

Yeah... but I'm NOT a fan of American-type bell operations. The fact that it only rings when the gates are going down scares me. For the visually impaired, if they didn't hear the initial bells, they may not realize it until it's too late (unless they hear the train's horn and the engineer doesn't forget or isn't a no-horn zone). In my country of Canada, we use almost exactly the same signal system as you do, except for one key difference - the bells ring continuously until the gates are back up again.

The colors of the signal lights give information to the Engineer operating the train. The safetran signals seen in this video can have 1, 2, or 3 signal heads, with all 3 heads usually containing 3 lights, and on rare occasions 4 Lights. The top light is Green, the middle is Yellow, and the bottom is Red. Only one light is lit on each head at any given time, and the pattern of colors that the different heads display is called an Aspect. The Aspect of the signal can tell the Engineer to continue, or resume at Track Speed, the maximum speed allowed for the track beyond that Signal post which is the Highest Aspect, until he reaches the next Signal, this Aspect is called CLEAR and displays a Green light on the top Head and Red lights on all heads below. The Lowest Aspect is STOP and the Engineer must Stop the train just before reaching the the Signal post that is displaying the STOP Aspect, this Aspect displays Red lights on all Heads on the Signal Post. If the Engineer encounters a Stop Signal and fails to stop the train before any part of the train passes any part of the Signal Post, by Evan an inch, they will be taken out of service and most likely Terminated, There are many different Signal Aspects used on the different Railroads in the US, but the two mentioned above are common to all US Railroads that use Safetran Signals. Basically all us Railroads also use other Aspects to tell the Engineer information about speed restrictions, stop Signals, etc ahead, at the next or second Signal. While watching the video, it started out showing Red on all 3 heads or STOP, and the train continued to sit there for a while. After both Commuter trains crossed the Diamond ( where 2 sets of tracks cross each other) the Signal where the train was sitting which would have been a Stop Signal switched to a Proceed at Restricted Speed Aspect which depending on the Railroad and where the train was, the speed would be restricted to somewhere between 5 and 15 MPH And Be Ready to Stop, or a speed that you can Stop within half the distance to anything that is on your track The train then proceeded towards the Signal at the diamond and started to stop when the Aspect changed to Clear and the train started to accelerate. and when it passed the signal the Aspect “Dropped to a Stop Aspect known in US Railroad jargon as “Knocking the Signal Down” As they Knocked the Signal Aspect Down from the Highest Aspect (CLEAR) to the Lowest Aspect (STOP)

What if there was a Brightline train coming the other direction a few moments after the train has passed at double the speed? and he is like "why hasn't the gate gone up? let me go around as I have sitting here so damn long." then BOOM! People like that you will see on the news as a tragedy in a few weeks until they get it in their skulls that Broward is a changed place.

I have NEVER heard that and I come from a family of railroad workers. When I read that I thought the train was going to literally KNOCK the signal down as in breaking it and in need of repair. I watched a video a while back that stated something like train knocks down crossing signal, and when the train came by, because some idiot ran the gate and left it broken on the track, the train took out the signal. To me the wording should have been "long train waits for green signal during slow approach," then signal goes red {as it is supposed to} after the train has entered the block in the descriptor area of the video or at least more details or your definition of "knocking down a signal". Otherwise the title could be construed as click bait when the signal never got knocked down. Nice video and train, but I live in Florida, born and raised and I have never, not once heard that term until this video. And I've called CSX and other RR's when I've found broken or faulty signals along the rails or crossings. And I've never heard any conductor or engineer I know call it out like that either.

I don't know about any one else, but for the 7mins. 20sec. leading up to the "Knock Down" I was on the edge of my seat. The buildup to 7:20 was Riveting. Then at 299,792 kps, It Changed from Green to Red. I had to Rewind and Replay at 0.75 Speed just to savor the moment. It was so exciting, I couldn't watch the rest of the video. Nothing could ever Top THAT One Single Moment. So fleeting. I can only hope this You Tuber's other videos aren't as Compelling. I don't think my heart could take the strain.

You can tell that some of those graffiti 'artists' were real professionals having gone to the trouble to find a color-matched yellow for the Union Pacific cars. Yup, when I was in the U.S. I was bowled over at how damn longs the freight trains are. I don't remember which station it was but the Amtrak I was on stopped with the last two or three cars across the crossing for about 25 minutes. The conductor told me there was nothing wrong, just a routine stop. The frustration for drivers at these crossings must be astronomical.

Wow! You could have had a baby, then went it to pre-school while that train was passing by. But, what a train! A small town could be built up with the materials on that train. It would be interesting to know where it was going and for what purpose. Even without being in the line, I would have sat and watched it. I love big trains, little trains, all trains. Thanks to all of the men that devote their lives to making choo-choos, choo. Just my opinion.

You don't usually see mixed passenger and freight trains anymore, though. At least not in the US. For that matter, most of the long distance passenger rail service in the US is handled by Amtrak, which doesn't do freight service at all. There are still some smaller passenger lines along the east coast, but most of them don't go more than a few hundred miles total.

Notice that green traffic lights on highways are below red, while on RRs the green is above the red. This is called "Irish Persuasion" or 'high green' when illuminated. The tradition goes back to the ball system where a 'high ball' hoisted on a rope meant proceed, hence the term "highball."

That's an interesting mix of cars this train has. I was expecting to see that this train was hauling a few tons of rock, but never a mixed freight like this train had. I looked into what those tank cars are loaded with. Some looking around the net says that the hazmat placards with the number 1987 indicates that those tank cars are loaded with ethanol. I was also surprised to see the IRVING logos on those cars carrying lumber. IRVING is a conglomerate company headquartered in Saint John, New Brunswick. That means that lumber came from either Canada or one of the northeastern US states.
