Removed Historic Abandoned Air Force Railroad
We all know about the FEC Overseas Railway that went into the Florida Keys and Key West whose first passenger train arrived in 1912 and operations went on until 1935 when the Labor Day Hurricane destroyed the tracks and washed away most of all the infrastructure. At that point, the former ROW was turned into US 1 and FL City became the Southern Terminus for the FEC line just South of Homestead and at the tip of mainland FL and the continental United States of America. It went from passenger service to freight service hauling produce mostly. Toward the end of the line there was a spur that branched off the main around Naranja that serviced Homestead Air Force Base located at SW 288th Street in Homestead, FL. Military trains were a common site here during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 when Fidel Castro was hiding missiles from the USSR in Cuba and the world was on the brink of nuclear war! Despite all this history FEC decided to sell part of the Miami Extension to the city for an elevated rail system aka Metrorail in 1984 and the rest of the line in 1988 to make a busway which in my opinion displayed lack of vision because today it would've been prime real estate for Brightline trains. The railroad crossing at SW 137th Ave had two small WRRS cantilevers with signals but I don't remember crossing gates but it could've had them. The final traces of the Air Force base spur were removed around 2017 and now it is but a distant memory. FEC even had a connection with the CSX Homestead Subdivision formerly Seaboard Air line tracks built in 1926. Join me in this video for some South Florida history and railroad archaeology underneath Florida's Turnpike as we take a trip back in time...

To quote Doc Brown from Back to the Future, that railroad line has been “erased from existence.” What’s worse is that most people down there now neither know nor care about the past. Santayana must be breakdancing in his grave at how the past is so quickly forgotten these days. Thank the gods there’s archival evidence and your willingness to document railroad history. Take care and stay safe, Roly!

HAFB was deactivated after Hurricane Andrew. While it continued in use as an AF reserve base, it no longer needed rail service, which was mostly for fuel toward the end. When FEC shut down-and removed the Homestead branch, there was no longer a connection. That trackage was also used during the construction of the power plant, many mango seasons ago.
@railrol82

Excellent! There is a proposal to build a huge logistics and technology industrial park that would have been adjacent to that ROW if it still existed today. Fed Ex built a sizable facility close to the old Row and Amazon Prime is building a huge distribution complex in close proximity, too. The neighborhood is called Homestead Base.

The Western Charles and St. Mary's County (Maryland) Rail Trails are both ex-US Navy spurs that originated from the Baltimore and Ohio (now CSX) Pope's Creek Subdivision. While the Subdivision is still extant (the customers are power plants for the most part), other than that, the two Navy installations (which are still alive and breathing) were the original reason for the spurs; the one at the end of the WCRT dates back to 1890.

You can see special military train movements now and then on the Virtual Railfan KZfaq channel, but they are all just vehicles and tanks on flatcars. Several years ago when returning east from a trout fishing trip to western Wisconsin I saw a rail loading/unloading area connected to a military base next to the highway. But again, it was for flatcars. About as exciting as a team track (and I like team tracks). According to my reading, back in WWI the military went to the circuses to learn how they moved vehicles on trains.

Those maps really helped put it in perspective. Unless you lived there and remembered it the average person would never guess a train went by there. We have a spot in Milwaukee where a spur came off the MILW RD NB main and slid under the Xway and made a "S" Squiggles across a street and thru a parking lot to an industry. One thing that could indicate a roadbed is the placement of the Xway support pillars. You wouldn't have the abutment at that angle and the line for the pillars would be straight. Nice job as always and hope your area stays storm free.

I think I asked in a different context before, but how close did either the AFB spur you mention here, or the FEC main line it came off of, come to the current Homestead-Miami Speedway, built after Andrew hit and before the spur was taken up? Seems like it would have been a unique way to be able to get there and cut down on traffic…?
@railrol82
@railrol82 3 жыл бұрын
Great questions my friend. Both the FEC main and AFB spur were really close, I'd say approximately 5 or 6 miles. The speedway was built after Andrew and the rails to the main were removed in 1988. I always say that FEC lacked vision because this would've been prime real estate for Brightline! Thanks as always for the views and comments, 2!
