The GWR branch line from Yelverton to Princetown was one of the most loved and missed railway journeys in the West Country. Closed to passenger traffic in 1956, the line crossed the great national park of Dartmoor and navigated some 10.5 miles through some of the most rugged terrain in England. This film traces the history of the line from it’s inception to closure in 1956 and includes interviews with engineer drivers and guards that used to work on the line.

It would have to use diesels, otherwise it would constantly be setting the moor alight.

The Railway gave countless people the chance to go places without the burden of owning a car. Three and a tanner return from Wells to Weston Super Mare via Yatton on a Saturday!

That cute little train would be a real little gold mine if it hadn't been removed ... as usual, it typifies the total lack of vision by those that dismantled it and the government...

Wonderful! I went to yelverton 2 years ago, and drove across the moors to Princetown, and walked along the course of the railway. Another day I hired a push bike at mortonhampstead and cycled along that railway, stopping off at lustleigh, and ending up at bovey

It's a shame the trains are gone, but nice to know the lines can still be enjoyed.
