Rails in Wales. New Quakers Yard Station. January 2023.

On January 17th 2023, a bright sunny day in the Valleys, I made a special visit to Quakers Yard. Work is moving quickly on the new footbridge, an extra platform and a second section of track. This is part of a major investment
in the Valleys which will move us into the 21st century.

I was born in the Merthyr valley, where in the 1980s there was barely a train every 2 hours departing Merthyr for Cardiff. Now it's 2 per hour. That's a better service then seen even in the heyday of the GWR!

After electrification the plan is for 4 TPH for each of the three valleys

Good to see this, Mike, they still have quite a lot to do before the station reopens for business on Monday (I know you filmed this a few days ago!). Thanks for sharing.

Is there going to be a car park also it's one of the hardest stations to find in the Valleys, quite a was from the centre of Quakers Yard. 1st train ran last Monday; I was there

Good to see more improvements being made. Your footage reminded me of a project I was involved in back in 2006, when they were developing the option of rearranging Abercycnon, and resurrecting it as an island platform and getting rid of the old Abercynon North on the Aberdare line, and partly doubling between Merthyr Vale & Troedyrhiw. For some of it, I posted some survey work on my channel here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g955ga-ExszMdok.html . Evidently, much of that was done, hence the improved service north of Abercynon. Before that, it was a long single line section all the way to Merthyr.

Thanks for the info. John. Being retired for over 20 years has given me chance to spend many happy hours up the Valleys with my video camera. Yesterday I had a couple of runs on the new FLIRTS up to Rhymney. Video soon
