For five days in February 1989 British Rail was followed by camera teams on the occasion of electrification of the Eastern mainline reaching York
The programme was called Railwatch
I do not own the copyrights of this programme and upload this merely for the interest of rail-hobbyists all over. I have no commercial interests whatsoever.

Thank you so much for posting these. I really don't understand why the BBC doesn't make them available somewhere. I was born in the summer of 88. Dad saw day one, loved it and recorded the rest. I subsequently wore out the tape over the years. Thanks to you I have finally seen day one. Thank you! :). Shame about days 4 & 5. Silly KZfaq...

A great historic record of the 1980s ECML traffic profile. The core InterCity operation is much the same today (for HSTs read class 800s), and Donny PSB is still with us, but nearly all other operations are so different. Can you imagine a present-day train operator being so open about wrongly-adjusted yaw dampers?😉 HST set is quoted at £4m apiece; £9.8m in 2023 money. Compare that to the £5.7bn contract value for the original build of 57 Hitachi Class 80x sets for GWML and ECML; a whopping *one hundred million pounds* average per train set in 2017, equivalent £124m in 2023. Great value or what?!!

I don't think new trains would've solved a lot of these problems because when you introduce a new train you withdraw an old one so numbers stay the same.

+rudedanny I can't understand why one episode is/has caused problems yet the others are fine. Makes no sense.

I have enjoyed seeing these videos again. It's nice to see an interesting documentary that goes into a fair bit of detail. Do you have episodes 4 and 5.

I do have episodes 4 and 5 as well as the round-up episode... problem is though that, at least in episode 4, copyrighted music was used and therefore I was not allowed to post it... I may have to edit that part out of the soundtrack and replace it with something non-descript

I do, but KZfaq had issues with a part of the soundtrack which consisted of copyrighted material. Therefore I withdrew the upload of them. PM me for more information.
