The Railway Express Agency is the topic today's video series from the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota. We make these fun short videos on the regular while the museum is closed as a way for us to bring the museum to you!
The Railway Express Agency, REA was a joint effort for the railroads to make "less than carload" shipments easier for the consumer.

I guess I was one of the last people to use Railway Express. I lived outside of Boston, and went to Columbia University in New York. Every year from 1970-74 I would drop my cases off at the Railway Express in Boston, and they'd be delivered to Columbia ready to pick up. Reverse the process at the end of the school year. I really enjoy your videos; I live in London, England now but am pretty nostalgic for American railroads. Keep up the good work.

IIRC, I had one item shipped to me via REA. This would have been in late 1972 or early 1973. I certainly remember them being listed as a shipping option in mail order catalogs. Another shipping method we don't hear much about these days is Bus Parcel Express, where packages could be shipped via bus. However, with intercity and long haul bus routes disappearing, the means of carrying the parcels disappeared too. IIRC, BPX was often used to send films to movie theaters.

Many years ago, I used to work for CN, a Canadian railway. As I recall, it was Less Than car Load or LTL. Of course that was freight that didn't fill a boxcar, not small items or cash. However, there was CN Express, which would carry those small items or cash. This brings up a bit of a humourous story. Back in the mid 70s, when I was a technician for CN Telecommunications, when in the middle of nowhere small town of Armstrong, Ontario, (pop. ~200) I was also the telegraph agent. Among my duties was handling money orders. There was a woman in town, who sold lottery tickets and occasionally brought in cash to be sent via telegraph money order. I'd take the cash and send off the warrant. Then when I had to remit the cash to our office in Toronto, I'd take it to the post office and buy a postal money order, which I then sent in. The post office would take the cash and send it via railway express to wherever they sent it.
