I totally relate to the road anxiety. I’ve started driving my bike to places where I can get off-road immediately. It feels like attitudes to cyclists are worse than ever😢

I’ve resorted to driving my bike three miles up the road to ride it too Deb. Sad but necessary sometimes isn’t it. I think being a solitary woman is worse too my male friends just don’t seem to get the same level of harassment 🤷🏼‍♀️ 😔

When I regularly road cycled before lockdown, I’d started to drive with my bike into the countryside to start my bike rides, I got so fed up of drivers around cities and large towns. Still encountered idiots in the countryside but far less of them.

Hi Amy I get this all the time where I live in North Yorkshire. Every time I’m out I must have at least 2 or 3 very near misses like you said loads of room chevrons in the middle and still brush past. It’s not like I’m hard to see I’m 6’2” 100kilos so not a slight figure like yourself, it’s so annoying

Congrats on getting out on the bike. Feel the same about roads. Luckily a 90 mile long trail has just opened below my house. Bad part is coming back home is a 600ft climb at the end. Thanks for the video and stay safe out there. Take care, Al

Well done Amy great job getting out, I know exactly what you mean i live ina very rural area, cars come so close tractors seem to be even worse at close passing and also when cutting headges they are totally ignorant and won't stop cutting while you pass danger of getting bits in your eyes also they never clean the crap up they leave it Strood all over the road. Enjoy your rides and have a wonderful weekend.

After a crash in 2015, I had bad road-riding anxiety. I hope yours passes (mine did). No judgment on you. Do what works; it will be enough. (Also, hearing you lay down the law while your bike is leaning against a "No Cycling" sign is just a delight.)

I went for a long ride yesterday all the way round Bodmin Moor and ended up coming back down into Lostwithiel down the A390. So many close passes (weirdly, all from red cars!). I had one who I could hear on my tail waiting for clear road to overtake, and when they had it, they gave me a close pass. It’s terrifying. Also, the faster the road, the closer the pass - does speed make drivers feel even more invulnerable? Well done getting out - was that yesterday too? At least it stayed reasonably dry (if a little cold!)
@amerridesbikes
@amerridesbikes Жыл бұрын
Oh gaaaahd A390 is THE WORST, especially there. When I cycled to lands end from John O’Groats with the Internationelles two years ago we had more abuse there than the whole rest of the 1500km sadly. I never ride from St A to Truro either as they drive way too close and fast, horrid road. Hurrah for fry and cold though, much better than 40mph rain!

Same here in Australia now and it's getting worse as population Increases. I never really ride on the road much in the UK mostly I went off-road, in Cornwall too. Might pay to get a bright Gillet on the roads
@amerridesbikes
@amerridesbikes Жыл бұрын
I don’t think bright clothing makes much difference. I always try to wear bright socks as apparently the moving parts are most visible. It feels like we’re just an inconvenience and they’ll stop at nothing to save a few seconds, sigh. Sounds like the problem is world wide if Australia is getting it too
@glennoc8585
@glennoc8585 Жыл бұрын
@@amerridesbikes sadly universal, blame a lot on the uptake of smart phones in the hands of the careless. Hard to say about bright clothing as I haven't seen a proper bit of research on it. A flashing day light is probably better. It's a bit like the radar for bikes not really convincing me that drivers are going to change.

To be honest some cyclists don’t help themselves the other day I put my bike in the car for an audax event and where I live in the town the roads are very narrow I came up behind 2 of the all the gear no idea mob taking the whole lane up when I did get past them I pulled in to give a little advice and was told where to go 😤I think there’s a new breed of numb nuts in cycling today unfortunately

Oh yeah 100% there are some inconsiderate cyclists. I got stuck behind one riding in the middle of a single track road who could’ve let me past numerous times at rush hour fir about ten minutes one morning, I was livid. The standard of driving though, in Cornwall particularly, is horrendous, whether I’m cycling, motorbiking or driving sadly

@@amerridesbikes I didn't mind driving or cycling in Cornwall when I lived in StIves in the 90s. I used to ride to Hayle and back everyday.
