Have you ever wanted to collect rain water to use for your garden, well in this video, Robert walks you through his process for upgrading his 35-gallon rain barrel system to a 120-gallon rain collection system.
Robert also demonstrates his process for converting Earthminded's diverter to work with PVC for a custom rain collection inflow pipe.

@@providentphotography162 uhh… not sure if this is a piss take or you’re serious. Primer-cleaner not only cleans the surface of the pvc, but also softens the material, allowing the cement to form a stronger bond. No one is taking apart a properly primed joint. On the other hand, if you want ease of disassembly, no glue at all would be more than sufficient for a low to no pressure application like this. I can’t think of a case where a brittle glue joint that easily shatters apart is the preferred method.

Lol you must be a dodgy plumber if you think he did it correctly.... No PVC primer used before glue applications! Winding Teflon tape anti clockwise (opposite) thread direction WRONG!👎

I give you a tip concerning the use of silicone for these type of purposes. Most regular silicone uses solvents that are very toxic for micro bacterial life for a very long time. There is a special type of glue that is used for aquatic life purposes. It is also used to glue EPDM rubber. It has a black color, it is far stronger then regular silicone, and it even hardens under water, unlike regular silicone. Yet it also stays flexible and it has a rubber feel to it when it dries or hardens. It can handle UV light and frost without a problem. But most importantly, it is not toxic for aquatic life because it has no toxic solvents. Those solvents from regular silicone glue can have a long lasting negative effect on the micro bacterial life in your system, which you do not want to happen, because the micro bacteria do all the most important work in your garden, or in any other food growing system or aquatic system that heavily relies on useful bacteria. In general the EPDM glue is more expensive, and it also comes in the same package as regular silicone, but from my experience it is the best stuff that you can get for these type of applications. And it works great with these type of barrels, because I constructed an entire fish pond from different barrels, that I connected together with pipes below the water surface, without the use of dedicated pipe connectors. Instead I used EPDM rubber, and this EPDM glue to seal everything, and to keep the pipes in place. And it has been like that for at least 10 years without any leaks.
@NaturebyGus
@NaturebyGus 2 жыл бұрын
I think you totally missed what product he used. Watch again. He used Aquarium clear silicone. Clear silicone and even more those designed for aquariums are totally safe for beneficial bacteria and all aquatic life...
@insAneTunA
@insAneTunA 2 жыл бұрын
@@NaturebyGus You are correct, I did not see that. Nevertheless I think that EPDM glue or kit is far superior and stronger, especially for general outdoor use, especially in climates where it can be freezing cold and blistering hot. And I noticed that these days EPDM glue is also sold in a clear version. EPDM glue adheres to everything, including nylon, which most glues or even silicone doesn't do. Most silicone products let go after some time when you glue nylon or plastic in an outdoor application. EPDM glue doesn't. But it never hurts to point out that people should not use regular silicone for these type of applications due to the toxic solvents which have a long lasting negative effect on the aquatic life.
@NaturebyGus
@NaturebyGus 2 жыл бұрын
@@insAneTunA I still disagree about the long lasting effect of the solvents from clear silicone. The specifications of most clear silicones are very clear. They only release toxic solvents during the CURING process. After that they are 100% safe for aquatic life or beneficial bacteria with absolutely no solvents released (specially those like the one used in the video, made for Aquariums). Otherwise they will damage the super important beneficial bacteria of those expensive aquariums and their filters all over the world. Most EPDM glues also release vapors during the curing process. and they are not designed or promoted from the manufacturer as "reef or fish safe", some people use EPDM liners and that is fine and safe because they are already cured. This is from a well known EPDM glue instructions: "EPDM is extremely flammable during the curing process, do not inhale vapors. Due to solvent flash-off, condensation may form".
@insAneTunA
@insAneTunA 2 жыл бұрын
@@NaturebyGus If they are fish safe it is okay, I do not disagree with you. I only say that the EPDM glue is far superior to any type of silicone, whether it is fish safe silicone or not. And yes, the solvents in the bad silicone have a long lasting effect. In many cases the extra information on most silicone's even warn for that. I am not going to dispute the factory warnings. If they say it I believe them.

I love to see how other people set up their rain harvesting! My plumbing projects rarely work out and usually leak so I avoid them. I use rain chains and put my rain barrels directly under them. I put a hot water heater overflow pan under the barrel to direct the overflow to a french drain. To use the water, I use a hose to gravity fill a 40 gallon trash can and use watering pitcher/can. I use the trash can so that I don't have to stand there and wait for the water can to gravity fill. Not has handy as your pump, for sure. But, those pumps make quit a bit of noise. Congratulations on building a successful system and this is a very nice video,

Great attention to details. Nice video! I'd suggest you flame torch for 5 seconds the slightly undersized drilled hole before threading your NPT PVC fitting into the barrel. Don't thread it all the way though. Leave about a 1/4 inch to take up any adjustment after it cools. Softening the polyethylene makes it really easy to form nice tapping fillets into the hole by using the fitting itself. It produces a leak proof connection 100% of the time.
