I remember when my sisters husband , who was a huge Purple fan, got this album the day it was released in Detroit, huge Blackmore fan who’s heart was broken when he left DP. So we listened to it 4 or 5 times in a row while we played euchre and passed doobies. Remember it like yesterday. I’m 61 years old today, (birthday), have attended legendary shows, and I must emphatically state, that Dio’s vocal on Stargazer is the greatest rock vocal ever recorded!

DIO era Rainbow is pure gold. Those first 3 albums are near perfection. Was never a Graham Bonnet or Joe Lynn Turner fan, too poppy for my own taste. But you can never lose with Dio. Stargazer is the only hard rock song that can bring a tear to my eye every single time. Rainbow Rising is a masterpiece.

Guitar Player " in 1975, Blackmore formed Rainbow, a group that retained the British guitar hero’s compositional penchant for grand-scale classical drama. The sturm und drang of this tune is drawn from the operatic blockbuster “Stargazer,” and boasts a fusillade of rapid fire pull-offs culled from the B Phrygian dominant scale (B, C, D# E, F#, G, A). Sometimes called the “Blackmore snake-charmer” scale, this is actually the fifth mode of E harmonic minor, and is characterized by its exotic Middle Eastern flavor and composed on the cello by Blackmore who also scored the orchestra. Roll over Beethoven, for sure!"

Nick, keep the Rainbow coming, great reaction. You definitely should do the whole album. Most people, including me think this is Rainbow at their best. It's just a classic album start to finish. Ritchie Blackmore is my favorite guitarist, always has been, & Stargazer has one of my favorite leads by him. If you want to hit Rainbow with Dio again, I'd hit one of this three next. Kill the King, Gates of Babylon or Catch the Rainbow, just a beautiful song. I also just watched your Tommy Bolin - Post Toastee reaction. Tommy Bolin was such a great talent that got taken away from us way to early from an overdose. But he did put out some great music. You should check out some of his stuff in the James Gang & Purple. From the James Gang Standing in the Rain The Devil is singing our song From another time Must be love From Deep Purple Gettin' Tighter Love Child This Time Around You keep on moving. Nick you also mentioned how Purple, Sabbath & Rainbow all intertwined with each other. Like you said Dio sang in both Rainbow & Sabbath. Well Ian Gillan who sang for Purple also did an album with Sabbath. Also Glenn Hughes who was in Purple, singer & bass, was in Sabbath for an album. Cozy Powell, the amazing drummer was also on Rainbow & Sabbath. Bass player Bob Daisley also in Rainbow, Sabbath & Ozzy Osbourne band. Don Airey, Roger Glover & Ritchie Blackmore of course was in Purple & Rainbow. And if you through Whitesnake in the mix to, then you have David Coverdale, Jon Lord & Ian Paice all in both Purple & Whitesnake, also Cozy Powell was also in Whitesnake.

Ritchie is a master of using and playing middle eastern scales. A lot of the accompaniment utilizes the Phrygian modes. In concert, Carey had a lengthy keyboard solo. Ritchie did this incredible slide solo creating this amazing mood. Speaking of Bach, Ritchie often played Bach's 3rd Brandenburg. The intro to Catch the Rainbow (live) , he plays the first Prelude from Book 1 of the Well Tempered Klavier. Ritchie has also tossed in VIvaldi. Hell, he played Beethoven's 9th. The point is Ritchie was playing Bach and Baroque before others, playing the arpeggios and pedal points. He was the original. He, Jan Akkerman, Steve Howe are the original masters that everyone else emulates. Ritchie and Jan were the original shredders. Steve very classical in his approach. By the way, that's the Bavarian String Ensemble playing at the end of Stargazer.

The 'Gates of Babylon' have similar middle-eastern groove. And another excellent Ritchie Blackmore's solo is in it. I'd bet you would like it. Live version, and studio version are both great. Once I saw Ritchie on an interwiew saying, that he figured out that he started to play to fast, and had to slow down a bit, because no one would be able to follow what he's doing. Or something like that, anyway...

Hi Nick, needless to say I've been waiting for this. I was 20 yrs old when I saw the stunning cover of this album in the record rack. With vinyl I took out the record to look at the grooves having already decided to buy it and saw on side 2 ...only two long tracks !!! Omg I could not wait to get home to play it. Side one is brilliant right from the get go with "Tarot Woman" which introduces us to the character being told his future, that happens on side 2...So definitely do the whole album. Let Lex hear Stargazer not on camera so there is no interruptions and can fully enjoy the experience I felt when I was just 20. Thankyou Nick for playing this iconic track. It had the same effect on me....and decades later...still does !!! .... The 1st album Black Sabbath does with Dio is called "Heaven & Hell" and is an incredible album. After more albums Toni Iommi took the group to do live concerts but did not call the group Black Sabbath. He renamed this group ..with Dio .."Heaven & Hell" and refused to play any Black sabbath tracks before Dio, so the live concerts were all tracks by Dio....and on dvd !!! They are incredible ! So plenty to look forward to Nick ... & Lex !!! Thankyou again ! Byee Jim X

As I said before, this is was a watershed album; a milestone. When this came out, I knew Rainbow. "Man on the Silver Mountain" had gotten air play and it was impactful. But when I saw this at the record store and grabbed it, I had no idea what I was bringing home with me. As usual, first listen I was alone with my headphones. It was pretty jaw-dropping for the time. And yeah, spot on with the Kashmir connection. They preceded this with the eastern modes and almost surely influenced it. Nonetheless, having heard Kashmir first didn't soften the blow when I first spun this. Also, people were calling things "heavy metal" before this. Also also. Someone below mentioned Uriah Heep. You should absolutely check them out; "Magician's Birthday" and "Demons and Wizards". Better yet, "Uriah Heep Live", from 1973.

Over the years I've come to the opinion that Blackmore's solo on here is the best I've ever heard. The build up of tension in the ascending run and at the end of the solo get me every time. It's Dio's finest vocal performance. And a word should go to Martin Birch, the producer, who put the whole thing together. He was as important to the development of hard rock and heavy metal music as any musician. He produced Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath with Dio, and Iron Maiden. And Cozy Powell, the drummer, seemed to have worked with just about anyone who was anyone in the UK music scene, so that he was a "name" in his own right, and never just the drummer in the band. Eastern scales have had a place in western popular music at least as far back as the psychedelic era, just as there was always some crossover from classical music. I think Kasmir was the first track to make it so explicit.

Welcome to the world of 𝕯𝖎𝖔 and 𝕽𝖎𝖙𝖈𝖍𝖎𝖊 𝕭𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖒𝖔𝖗𝖊 my friend! THIS reaction is what I KNEW was coming, and that is _why_ I got you the primo albums for you and Lexi to enjoy😊. 𝕮𝖔𝖟𝖞 𝕻𝖔𝖜𝖊𝖑𝖑 is a highlight on this album as well. One of the saddest days when he passed away (and then Dio many years later). He had such a HUGE sound and very distinctive. Speaking of the "Cinematic" sound of this track and the Arabic scales . . . I would think that this song was inspired by a slightly _cheesy_ Biblical tale that starred Paul Newman, Jack Palance, Virginia Mayo and Lorne Greene, called "The Silver Chalice". The "Stargazer" lyrics match what Jack Palance's character (Simon Magus) does, up to the film's last act. Someone years ago edited scenes from the movie with the Rainbow track together, but seems the powers that be took it down :(. You have the 2 consecutive Dio era Sabbath albums ("Heaven and Hell" and "Mob Rules") and 𝕯𝖎𝖔'𝖘 band debut "Holy Diver" to enjoy on your own with Lexi, and with your fans! And more 𝕽𝖆𝖎𝖓𝖇𝖔𝖜 to enjoy! \m/ \m/ I thought I'd never get to see Rainbow perform these songs. But on the 2005 tour of "Dio", I got to see him at the House of Blues in Anaheim and he performed Tarot Woman, Gates of Babylon, Man on the Silver Mountain and Long Live Rock 'n Roll. I had tears in my eyes, and after, went on the balcony and there was a huge "Red Moon", it was a magical night. But I guess it was a "sign", the next day my Dad passed away :(. He was a tough man to live with during my teens onward, but he was the very person that got me into Rock, and distorted guitars (started me off with The Beatles and Santana to start my journey), and he liked much of the music I'd play in my room 🙂. #nicknlexrequest Time to break open your DVD "𝕽𝖆𝖎𝖓𝖇𝖔𝖜 𝕷𝖎𝖛𝖊 𝖎𝖓 𝕸𝖚𝖓𝖎𝖈𝖍 1977" and WATCH/React to "Catch the Rainbow" (a VERY different version that 1st appears on Rainbow's debut album) and watch the band in all its glory, and the outstanding stage presence of Dio and Blackmore! And again, checkout your *Pete Frame "Family Tree"* book and the branches in the "Deep Purple Family Tree". Lastly . . . If you are ever wanting to sample some bands with a "Middle Eastern" feel of various types of music . . . mavearworx.weebly.com/blog/m-a-v-e-a-r-w-o-r-x-track-to-track-playlist-4-d-u-n-e (Playlist Link at the end - some Oriental/Middle Eastern/Persian bands as well!) - Rest in Peace; Cozy Powell, Jimmy Bain, Ronnie James Dio, and my Papa' ("Antonio" II), with MUCH love on Fathers Day 🥲.

I think Zep's last 2 albums have grown on most fans over the years. Including myself. Very much underrated albums. You should give them more listens. Same can also be said of Black Sabbath's last 2 albums with Ozzy

The song is a warning never to put your trust in people who promise impossible things or who tell you they are better than you are. The Wizard convinces his followers that he can fly if they build him a tower of stone. He fails and the followers are freed from their common delusion. It's powerful stuff.

I would not call the song Heavy Metal but like the song Sinner by Judas Priest a year later, it is hard rock with strong, VERY STRONG elements of early heavy metal. First the opening drum. Holy shit, this might be the greatest drum intro in the history of rock and it's easy to see the influence on heavy metal. Then there's Ritchie Blackmore absolutely mind blowing extended solo. Again, easy to see how that influenced Heavy Metal. That solo is just on another level. Of course, let's not forget James Dio, one of the greatest voice in Rock. So the song would be more Hard Rock than Heavy Metal but it's influence on Heavy Metal is undeniable. And this is just a fucking great song.

To make an in-depth analysis of Ronnies voice, please listen to "L.A. Connection" - look for the remastered studio version, or even go for the "Kill The King", 1976 live version from Munich. Dio is still winning new souls to his army of fans every single day, deservingly so! The best metal rock singer of all time. On top of that - look at how he connects with his live audiences! He's truly THE man on the silver mountain! Thanks for Your video reaction! I must have heard "Stargazer" hundreds of times every year, for decades, now. And I still get the goose bumps, every single time! The song is from another dimension! It's out of this World! 😎🤘
