Rainbow Rising - Classic Album Review and first time reaction from 1976
Ritchie Blackmore, Ronnie James Dio, Cozy Powell, Tony Carey, Jimmy Bain
I can still remember coming home on the bus on the day this was released, looking at the photos and wondering what it was going to be like!
In this video I talk about the what it was like back in 1976 when Rainbow Rising was first released, hearing it for the first time, and the effect it had on me and the anticipation of seeing Rainbow later that year. This is my reaction video as I remember it from the time.
I talk about the original vinyl version, the CD remasters and what version I would recommend and walk you through the tour merch like the badge and tour program.
Introduction:
In the world of music, there are certain albums that transcend time and become legendary. One such album is Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow Rising, released in the summer of 1976. This album holds a special place in the hearts of rock music enthusiasts, and its impact continues to be felt even decades later. Let’s delve into the significance of Rainbow Rising and explore the profound influence it had on the rock music scene of its time.
Anticipation and Expectations:
Following the release of Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow in 1975, there was immense anticipation surrounding the follow-up album. Fans and critics alike wondered how Blackmore would build upon the success of his first solo venture. The lackluster response to Deep Purple’s Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band albums further heightened expectations for Rainbow Rising. As the album release approached, posters started appearing, teasing fans with the title “Rainbow Rising” and promising a new musical experience.
The Album Unveiled:
In May 1976, Rainbow Rising hit the shelves, and fans eagerly queued up to get their hands on a copy. As the vinyl spun, the album unfolded with a sense of grandeur and anticipation. The opening track, “Tarot Woman,” set the stage with a slow-building synthesizer keyboard solo, creating an atmosphere of rock music that was bound to leave a lasting impression. Ronnie James Dio’s powerful vocals added a new dimension to the music, elevating it to a whole new level.
Side Two and the Epic Journey:
As fans flipped the vinyl to Side Two, they discovered a surprise. Unlike the typical track listing, there were only two songs on this side, indicating something extraordinary lay ahead. The album’s centerpiece, “Stargazer,” greeted listeners with a dark, brooding riff that captivated from the first note. This epic song, with its majestic sound and lyrics about wizards, took listeners on a musical journey like no other. The intricate guitar work of Ritchie Blackmore, accompanied by a symphonic backdrop, created an intense and unforgettable experience.
The Finale:
Following the epic journey of “Stargazer,” Rainbow Rising concluded with “A Light in the Black.” This fast-paced track showcased Blackmore’s guitar prowess and Dio’s commanding vocals. The song blended elements of classical music with the raw energy of rock, resulting in a ferocious and powerful sound. The guitar and keyboard solos intertwined seamlessly, leaving listeners in awe of the musicianship and the sheer force of the music.
The Impact:
Rainbow Rising had a profound impact on the rock music scene of its time. It showcased Ritchie Blackmore’s exceptional talent as a guitarist and composer, solidifying his status as a rock icon. Ronnie James Dio’s powerful vocals and the band’s tight instrumentation elevated the album to new heights. Rainbow Rising demonstrated that rock music could be grand, ambitious, and emotionally charged, captivating listeners with its intensity and depth.
The Legacy:
Decades later, Rainbow Rising continues to be hailed as one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Its influence can be heard in the work of countless artists who were inspired by its epic sound and powerful storytelling. Rainbow Rising stands as a testament to the creative brilliance of Ritchie Blackmore and the exceptional musicianship of the band. For fans of rock music, this album remains a timeless classic that deserves a place in every music collection.
Conclusion:
Rainbow Rising is a masterpiece that captures the essence of rock music at its finest. Its epic sound, powerful vocals, and intricate compositions make it an unforgettable listening experience. This album stands as a testament to the creativity and talent of the musicians involved. Rainbow Rising continues to inspire and captivate listeners, leaving an indelible mark on the history of rock music.

Hi Phil, Here is my memory about Rainbow Rising. It is '84 , I'm 17 years old growing up in the small town in the middle of nowhere in Yugoslavia. It is very difficult to get LP's. I have been saving my money the whole summer to buy a few records. I heard many fabulous stories about how Rainbow Rising is great, and how great the cover is. I used to see posters of the cover, but I never saw the actual record. I said to myself, this must be great, and put it on my list. In the meantime, I happen to see a few German import LP's, with the beautiful glossy covers, nice packaging, and excellent pressing too. Even today it is hard to see albums as beautiful as those ones. That was not the music I liked , but at least , I had an idea how these LP's from Germany look like. I have an uncle who used to work in Berlin, West Germany at the time. I decided to write him a letter and at the end of the letter I asked him to buy me 5 records I had wanted. “Do not send them by mail, bring them with you when you are home for Christmas please, and I will give you the money”. I remember, there were 5 records, but Rising was the main one. I was the most passionate about that one and I wanted to have that iconic cover. He did not respond, so I actually did not know if he even received the letter, let alone, if he bought the records. After a few months, at Christmas time, my father told me: "Uncle is here, we are going to visit him and have dinner". After the usual greetings, my uncle said: "Let me go to the living room to bring these records. I bought all 5 of them". I will never forget those 10 seconds of waiting, the longest 10 seconds ever. I remember it like it was yesterday. He returned to the dining room, but he was holding only actual vinyl records, just the plastics, no covers at all, and he said: "I'm sorry, I had so many presents to bring. My luggage was up to the roof, I had to throw away the covers or else I could not bring them at all, they were so big and heavy. The music is what's important, who cares about covers" I was brave enough not to cry in front of family, but it was not easy, believe me. My uncle brought me many records after that, but with the covers of course. He is still alive, I love him dearly, and I visited him last year when I was over there. I ended up making my own custom covers for the 5 records. When I moved to Canada it was impossible to bring my LP collection, but I brought my custom made Rainbow Rising cover with the precious German import vinyl with me. I bought another copy of Rainbow Rising here in Canada, but I still think that my old one is better.

Hi Phil, I commented on another of your reviews about my long time friendship with Black Sabbath's Tour Director and personnel manager, Mark Forster, from 1975 until his passing in 1991. Through his association (he knew everyone in the business), he knew I lived Ritchie and told me in 1978 how to get in touch with him during their Long Live Rock and Roll tour. Mark knew both Rainbow's stage manager Raymond D'Addario and Colin Hart. After an introduction, I gain access that allowed me, for example, finding myself having lunch with Cozy and David Stone... watching in Ritchie's dressing room where he had many guitars in very poses and eventually meeting him with Colin. Two years later he told me he "remembered my face" but not my name. Anyway, imagine being 15 years old in 1970?! Yes, Deep Purple In Rock and the glorious Child in Time solo. But the solo that really got to me was the last time I had tears in my eyes while listening to music (I am 68 now). The last half of the Catch the Rainbow Live solo. That was when I knew he was "It". There are numerous Live in japan Catch Rainbow solos on you tube and Damn if he doesn't play them differently every time. Phil I appreciate your dedication here. Yes, Side two of Rainbow Rising will live forever. I think we could talk for days about music. No, I am sure. stay safe, Pat Renau

The excitement you display while commenting about this album is exactly what I felt as a 13 year old in 1976! The keyboard wizardry on tarot woman sent me to another dimension altogether. Incredibly this album was released in the same year punk was beginning to take off and the pioneers of NWOBHM were in their formative phase. Nice Deep purple T shirt !

Hi Jegaraj, thank you for watching. I remember the Punk thing starting later that year and calling everything that came before it BOFs ( Boring Old Farts) I just remember thinking, how can I be an old fart… I’m only 17 - Phil :)
@jegarajramoo3873
@jegarajramoo3873 2 жыл бұрын
@@NowSpinningMagazine Actually the boring old farts mantra that these punks used is rather meaningless. This is because records released by proto punk bands like the stooges, MC5 and the New York Dolls are just as old as the early releases of black Sabbath, zeppelin, Yes , Deep Purple and other so called dinosaur bands! Both punk and heavy metal have their roots from that time frame of 1966 to 1975.

This has always been hands down my favorite hard rock album. And Stargazer just blows me away. The images it evoked in me as a teenager were so affecting…I’d never had a song truly feel “epic” and completely deserve that label. In my minds eye I saw an enslaved people in a primordial Egypt toiling to build this massive Tower of Babel at the direction of an evil God/Wizard, and then the climax as he climbs to the top to ascend to Godhood, only to be dashed to the dust. The song gave me chills, and still does to this day. The song encapsulates exactly what great rock/ metal does…..feed the imagination and paint monumental imagery in one’s minds eye. Your review of this record was a pure joy to listen to. I’ve never met others who regard this album has highly as me, and it’s wonderful to hear your admiration for this record. Keep the amazing content coming!

An awesome review of an awesome album! Everyone should hear it! I was born in 1957 and Deep Purple was the first band I ever saw live. Unfortunately, it was that period where Tommy Bolin and Glenn Hughes were imploding on drugs so it wasn't the best performance. I never saw Ritchie Blackmore live alas but he would have blown me away, especially if he was playing side two of "Rainbow Rising".

Thank you for that emotional review on Rising. I’ve never heard from anyone or spoke with anyone that ever got to see that band live. I was fortunate enough to see them with Dio in 78. , This is from memory I read a Rolling Stone review on Rising in Rolling Stone magazine. It was our Internet of the day. They said it was a hard driving album but then the guy copped an attitude about. Do you close your eyes and said, do I really care if you close your eyes when you’re making love, who caresif you close your eyes when you’re making love . Rolling Stone was leaning in a different musical direction in the mid 70s kind of panting, hard rock.

Hi Phil! Great review! Really enjoyed this! Great record. Just wanted to mention that Uli Roth also was at a zenith in the early phase of his career as he recorded “Virgin Killer” with the Scorpions also in 1976. His playing on Virgin Killer is some of the greatest hard rock virtuosic soloing of all time, and clearly demonstrates Uli’s legacy as a key early pioneer of neoclassical harmonic concepts in hard rock along with Blackmore.

@@NowSpinningMagazine Hi Phil! Those Scorpions records with Ulrich Roth between 1974-78 really do deserve wider recognition in general, and his playing in particular on those records should be a part of the basic conversation regarding the true pioneers of the neoclassical approach to hard rock guitar playing. Many guitarists of course acknowledge Uli but it seems not enough so. It really is stunning to go back now at a later age and listen closely to just how great Uli's virtuosity is, and to consider his level of virtuosity at that early juncture in hard rock guitar and neoclassical playing almost a decade before Malmsteen! Lonesome Crow recorded in 1972 with a 16 year old Michael Schenker is phenomenal. Uli's solo work during the Electric Sun period between 1979-1985 is incredible, and every rock guitarist should be aware of these fantastic and innovative records as well. Please do a video on these records if possible Phil. That not only would be greatly appreciated, but it would really be righteous for calling more attention and deserved respect to these records and Uli Roth as the important innovator he has always been. Thanks, Vince

Great to see your tour programme,Phil. The expanded edition featuring the Rough Mix,Los Angeles & New York mix. Jimmy Bain’s Bass was almost loss in mix,but when I was listening to ‘Tarot Woman’ through headphones via the ‘not so’ Rough Mix,I was pleasantly surprised to hear Jimmy Bain properly. One of the other two mixes has Jimmy’s Bass, more up in the mix with the addition of some echo/slap back in places too. The price of those deluxe expanded CD editions are going up through the roof nowadays. As you say that is the definitive version to buy. I recall seeing the cassette re-issues when they included Rainbow’s debut too.

Special video about a special album. You really spoke well and with passion and it was great to listen to! I especially liked the story about everyone taking the bus into town to buy it, those were great times. More often than not I would cycle to my local store and as you can imagine I had to be very careful on the way back! (I might tell you a story about a Meat Loaf record and my bicycle one day if Meat comes up on one of your videos in the future!) I first bought Rainbow Rising in the early 1980`s on vinyl as a two on one in a gatefold with the first album. Like yourself listening to the intro to Tarot Woman you just knew something special was on it`s way! Still one of my favourite albums and album covers. Thanks for a great video Phil!

I'm going to repeat myself here... Bravo Phil !! I didn't think you could top your BURN review, but you've done it with Rising. Your excitement in searching for the right words shows the importance the album holds for you. So many of your memories of getting the record and playing it for the first time ring true with me. You being in England and me in Canada.....the music spanned the Atlantic for us 2 teenaged rockers ! I got the album for Christmas, 1976. Tony Carey's spooky intro to Tarot Woman honestly scared my 15 year old ears !! What an opening track !! I loved the march of Run with the Wolf, the groovy triplets of Starstruck, and the bounce of Do You Close Your Eyes. Side 2 ?? Dear God !! Simply put, the majesty of Stargazer endures to this day. A Light in the Black was a manic , thumping, marvellous chunk of metal.. Start to end, Rising is wonderful record. Rainbow never made a better one, to my ears. Again Phil, great stuff !! I really enjoy your channel.

😅Great video Phil which took me right back to 1976. First track I ever heard on the album was Light In The Black, played as a taster for the newly released LP by Alan Freeman on his Saturday afternoon Radio 1 rock show. My older brother and I were slack jawed in amazement! My best friend bought it first but I soon followed. Side 1 of the vinyl album was good but side 2 was the real deal. Saw them on the same tour as yourself on 1st September 1976 at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester. My mate and I were also looking forward to seeing support band Stretch as well, as I had their two albums Elastique and You Can't Beat Your Brain For Entertainment. However they came on stage very late, very apologetic and told us that their equipment had failed and would consequently only be able to give us a few acoustic songs. Rainbow came on, the lightshow and sound was brilliant and we stood and watched open mouthed as Blackmore destroyed a guitar during Light In The Black. What a gig. What a night.Like you I still have the tour programme. Also an article in Sounds in a scrapbook which followed a couple of weeks or so later which gave a flavour of life on the road with Rainbow, and gave a mention of that Leicester gig. Thanks for giving me the chance to reminisce!

This video is utterly fantastic! I found this album for myself just last year. I hadn't listened to anything that Dio had sung save Rainbow in the Dark, and when that song played after the most recent Thor movie, I wanted to check if the Holy Diver album would've worked better for it. After that album finished, Stargazer kicked on, which caught my ear. I decided to just listen to everything Dio that I could find, and now he6my favorite singer ever. Specifically listening to Rising, I put it on, not really knowing what to expect exactly, as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow left me a bit cold. It utterly blew me away. You summed up my throughts on side 1, which was great (I really enjoy Do You Close Your Eyes). Then Stargazer kicked on while I was listening more attentively, and my mouth was just agape. I was on the bus on my way to work and my mind was totally being blown away. One of the most visceral reactions I've ever had to anything I've seen, heard, read, or played. I showed it to my mom (who had missed it when it came out) and she also had her mind blown. Rainbow Rising is one of the all-time greatest albums, IMO.

What is so interesting, and rather unique about this album is the feeling of shared experience. Every word you said Phil, and I mean that quite literally, perfectly captures and echoes those of my own in respect of emotional response and initial reaction upon hearing this album for the first time in ‘76. Equally in it’s absolutely dramatic artwork and design from front to back I clearly see that your perception of the sleeve duplicates my own. Therefore I can only conclude that the most notable quality of this album lies in its extraordinary conveyance of a shared experience with such dogged defiance and singularity to all of us who share your passion. Amazingly we seem to be dealing here with an LP of such single minded power and passion to such a degree that all who fall under its spell, well at least all of us bewitched and beguiled by this epic from its initial release, share a journey matched universally by each listeners every footfall and heartbeat from beginning and onward through each beat and twisting and turning bar through to its conclusion. How many of you gathered here of the same vintage found yourselves pre-empting Phil’s every sentence and word as I did? I for one wouldn’t attribute this in anyway to a predictability in Phil’s oratory or any kind of cliche in this music. I struggle to conjure up any other record that can match the inarguable and precise purpose with which this record announces and delivers its payload through each and every groove. It’s as if this album leaves not a single opportunity for divisive opinion or debatable meaning amongst its legions of disciples. Simply put a uniqueness so unrivalled that anyone of us brave enough to take Phil’s place, differing only in personal style and limited or not by the articulacy at our disposal, would have appraised and summed up the impact of Rainbow Rising identically. Not so much “I see a Rainbow rising” but “WE see a Rainbow rising, out there, on the horizon”.

After all these many years, listening countless times to Stargazer, it remains a Revelation of pure passion & brilliance. Rainbow Rising is carried indelibly within my being. You just had me listen to the whole album now on my morning walk. Amazing 😍 You could literally spend days just talking about how mind-blowing the album is. Talk about each musician's talent. The precision with which they played. Just listen closely to how precise and yet piercing was Jimmy Bain, the ease at which RJD reaches those high notes, Carrey's colorful lacing on keyboard/Synth, Cozzy's powerful drums and of course the Maestro of all times, Mr Blackmore himself, what an amazing musician who didn't get the recognition he deserves im afraid. I think people didn't know how to "eat" this guy and preferred the more conventional rock playing of Paige and Clapton. Not that they don't deserve their place in history, but really there is no comparison at all. Paige had the privilege to be amongst better musicians and he got well with the spirit of the music at that time. But to compare what Blackmore did in that era, and how he stirred the direction of purple and took them to be at the top of the crop and even more powerful a musician with Rainbow. Not easy at all to play some of his "simple" solos . I can go on and on but I'll stop before I get too carried away 😅

Crikey, takes me back to buying and listening to this album myself at the time. First heard rainbow in the school common room on an old Hakker(?) record player when someone bought the first album. Rainbow Rising was one of the first albums I got on leaving school in June 1976!. Phil, I'm impressed you've still got your original copy but not surprised being a Purple fan. I'm gutted I had a mad moment in the 80's and thought 70's rock was old hat never to to be 'cool' again and sold a huge amount of vinyl. I never liked the 80's new wave stuff but got sold a 'pup' as a twenty something music lover thinking my tastes were out of date. However, for some reason I kept my Yes/Genesis/ELP stuff!. As for Ritchie Blackmore axe god, he is just awesome on this album. There are no duff tracks on this album Cozy Powell is superb in fact for me the Dio period of Rainbow was when the band peaked.
