I’m in my mid-40s and have been listening to Rush since the age of 13. But in the past few years I’ve only liked listening to Power Windows and Signals. I just listened to Rainbow Rising for the first time in the last year or two. Maybe it’s the newness of it to me, the beautiful tones of the keyboards, the absolute stomp of cozy Powell, Dio’s vocals, or the songwriting, but I’m going with Rising over 2112.

I bought Rainbow Rising in 1977 and 2112 in 1978. Both great albums although overall Rainbow Rising is a more consistent album in my opinion. Fun fact: Cozy Powell was recommended to Ritchie Blackmore by John Bonham as Ritchie and John were drinking buddies.

The two albums were very important to me growing up. I heard Rising in 78 around the same time I heard the first 3 rush albums. I then bought the back catalogue including the then new Hemispheres (my favourite Rush album) and at the time I would probably choose Rising over 2112. However, years and years later I can say I only really like Tarot Woman and Stargazer, although it is quite ploddy, and that's about it. With 2112 I play it often and right from the outset I can listen to the whole album. I treat Something For Nothing as the encore as if it were a live concert and it never disappoints. The Overture is an incredible opener and I really like the acoustic sections because I know it's part of the story that will lead to the grand finale, which is always worth waiting for.

You could add to it Sad Wings of Destiny by Judas Priest. While not a prog album by any means, it has prog elements typical of early Priests when they were still searching their sound and this prog influence is especially visible in the excellent Victim of Changes in the album and Sinner in their follow up Sin after Sin. These two albums are when Priests are at their most prog. The follow up, Stained Class in early 78 will see them going away from prog and more 'pure metal' edging closer to their post Screaming for Vengeance sound. But yeah, I'd say Sad Wings of Destiny, 2112 and Rising are the three albums that came out in 1976 and were the foundation to prog metal.

I fall into the love both of them camp, but of the 2 Rainbow Rising edges 2112. Agree about The Fountain of Lamneth being a series of shorter songs corraled together to make a side long concept piece - with the opening and closing songs sharing the same riff and tune. Individual Rush songs such as Bytor and the Snow Dog and The Necormancer are probably the first real Prog Metal near masterpieces - however for a whole album Rising is the one. I also think that on A LIght in the Black Tony Carey set the template sound for both Prog metal and Power metal synth soloing with that sawtooth setting. Someone else in the coments mentioned one but I think there are two other albums from 1976 that lit the torch for prog metal - Judas Priest's Sad Wings of Destiny and Black Sabbath's Technical Ecstasy -the melding of Iommi's heavy guitar riffing and soloinig with Gerald Woodruffe's organ and synths are one of the reasons its my favourite Sabs album - although prog metal foundations were probably laid way back in 1970 on Deep Purple's In Rock - and as you say with Jon Lord's fusing of classical with rock , even though it wasnt really fully realised until In Rock those earlier Purple albums had the kernel of an idea - which also points to the likes of Vanilla Fudge and Jimi Hendrix as being important foundation blocks for the genre - all of which was distilled and brought together within Rainbow Rising

Snap! The first 45 I bought was "All Night Long"! You and I are the same age, nationality and have a similar musical journey! But re-listen to "Bent out of Shape" Andy! It's still Rainbow through and through! I just recently collected all the Rainbow studio albums on cd and can now reassess them, with the conclusion that they are all great albums! I saw the Bent out of Shape tour at the Bristol Hippodrome and they were absolutely jaw dropping that night! As a HUGE life long Rush fan and veteran of many Rush shows, I still have to give up for "Rising"- a fully realized accomplished album with superb compositions and musicianship! As much as I revere 2112 for its catalytic importance, it really is side one that makes the album imo. Now I'd love to see a show about the mighty Killing Joke!!!

I love Rainbow especially with Dio. I love Richie Blackmore especially in Stargazer when he does the Middle Eastern sound guitar solo. Rush would be more technical. When Neil came in you have the human Metrodome that no one could compare to. Composition of the drums that no one can compare to. Crazy time signatures that you can't even tell it's happening because it's so smooth that nobody can do as good. Only three people and they stayed together the whole time. Stability, technicality, time signature changes, lyrically towards the natural being and life plus much more and innovated. So when I listen to Rainbow I already can pick out the sound of the drums not as tight. The timing is not as accurate just hook it up to a computer you'll see. So being a classical guitar player and a drummer myself with a very good ear and detail. I am called the number one fan. I love all music though from Pavarotti to Carlos Montoya on the Flamenco you can add in Slayer as well one of my favorites. Then you got my Three Angels Jackie Evancho, Angelina Jordan and the Earth loving Aurora. I just had to add that it in LOL. If you said who started Prague Rock and you mentioned fly-by-night anthem that would be before 76. So if you're going by date then Rush wins on that one but I don't go by winning or losing they're both great.

Round about the age of 10 (1970) I was obsessed with the 1812 Overture and would play it over and over, waiting for the big finale with the canons going off. I'd even pull up a chair to sit between the stereo speakers. I wish I'd heard 2112 when it came out in '76 but it passed me by, because I wonder what I would have thought of it then. Since I didn't get to hear either of these albums until only recently I can't really comment, but it's an interesting topic.

I love both and as a teenage guitarist, 2112 blew my mind. I agree that "Rising" is the more consistent album, both musically and sonically. As you say, a close call. Does anyone get annoyed by the early guitar entry on "Twilight Zone". It must have been been on the backing track but it always stands out as there is nothing like it in their catalogue.

Rush was greatly influenced by Yes, particularly Geddy and Alex. They both talked about being in their teens standing in line for hours waiting to score tickets to see Yes in concert. Geddy's big influence was Chris Squire and was a big reason he played a Rick bass in those days. 2112 through Hemispheres was their most overt Prog period and they have freely stated that bands like Yes and Genesis greatly influenced them. As for Prog-Metal DNA, I think some can be traced back to the King Crimson in 72-74, particularly on Red. Tool has drawn a lot of their KC influence from this period.
@jimmycampbell78
@jimmycampbell78 Жыл бұрын
Not sure about King Crimson influencing progressive metal, not in the beginnings of that genre anyway. The first prog metal bands in the 1980s were the likes of Fates Warning, Queensryche and Dream Theater and they have made it clear who their main influences are, the likes of Rush, Iron Maiden Judas Priest, Uriah Heep, Rainbow & Deep Purple. I think its a little later that a band like Tool draws some wider influences going back to the 70s as well.
@ciciusss
@ciciusss Жыл бұрын
thevampyre2598, I was not specifically talking about King Crimson influencing the early Prog Metal bands. My point was many point to Rush's 2112 as the early blueprint for Prog-Metal whereas, I argue that marker, the merging of Progressive Rock and Metal occurred earlier with King Crimson. Rush was a far more popular band than King Crimson and the direct influence is drawn from them by DT, Fates Warning and Queensryche. It's when you investigate it further, King Crimson was already bringing metal into Prog years before Rush. That was my point. The Prog bands that influenced the early Prog-Metal bands outside of Rush were Yes and Genesis. Obviously, Jordan Rudess is a big fan of Keith Emerson. The metal bands you listed were obviously influential. DT did cover Larks Tongue in the Aspic.

Overture,Temples of Syrinx and the finale may be the bombastic highlights of 2112 but you could not have the whole suite like that. Contrast in pace and tempo over the piece is required. Rush got it right. 2112 is definitely the real precursor to prog metal!

I bought 2112 and Pink Floyd's Animals in high school. I loved it then but later lost interest in them when I was a university student. I later landed a job as an insurance adjuster which I held for the bulk of my career. Listening to Rock music took a back seat to work for many years. Shortly before retiring I got very burnt-out with the corporate game. The company I worked for started applying metrics towards staffing in an effort to squeeze the last drop of blood in us before the work week was over. At that point albums like Animals and 2112 began to make sense again. Temples of Syrinx describes perfectly the company I worked for and suddenly I could not get enough of the album. Dogs from Animals seemed to describe me in my younger years and some of my younger coworkers as did the John Lennon song Working Class Hero. This post has nothing to do with progressive metal, it's just my Rush story and how I took solace in the album 2112 during a professional low point of my life. Other songs that helped me get through that period of burn out included: Industrial Disease by Dire Straights, I Robot by Alan Parsons Project (yeah I know, kind of wimpy), Burn Down The Mission by Elton John, Revolution by the Beatles, and Foggy Dew (about the Irish uprising in 1916) which I have about half dozen versions by various artists. It is definitely time to retire when you listen songs about burning stuff down when you work for the Temples of Syrinx Mutual Insurance company.

These are two of my favourite bands and this video has prompted me to chuck my hat in the ring and add a few thoughts. I'd argue that 2112 influenced more bands that play progressive music, while Rainbow Rising influenced a wide range of bands who in turn established new genres (or should that be sub-genres?) of metal. For example Ronnie James Dio's lyrics and vocals surely spawned a hundred power metal bands? Would thrash metal have evolved without A Light In The Black.? Was an orchestra ever incorporated into a rock song so seamlessly prior to Stargazer? And would we ever have heard neo-classical guitarists such as Malmsteen and Randy Rhoads without the influence of Ritchie Blackmore? In addition, Blackmore used to get so much stick for constantly changing the lineup of his bands, but would Gillan, Coverdale, Hughes, Dio, Bonnet, and Joe Lynn Turner ever have gone on to achieve the longevity they enjoyed without the opportunity Blackmore presented them with. The Man In Black's influence on rock music is unparalleled.

Great analysis. Rainbow Rising ⭐️ Only Ritchie Blackmore would omit to ever play live, a song (Tarot Woman) that would slay any opener by any other band or track by Rainbow … apart from Stargazer. Of course … to compound this he would then play as an opener .. “Kill the king” … which he stated he wasn’t very keen on/didn’t rate. Of course … he’s usually proved right when he follows his instincts. Have never understood why someone who is the genius behind two of the best rock bands ever … is never rated as the equal of any of the BIG THREE guitarists from the mid 60’s in the U.K. No one could play like Ritchie in the early seventies. Evidence - The solo from Child in time. The 4 minute guitar cadenza/improvisation from concerto for group and orchestra .. 1969

Two albums I grew up with as a 15 year old who loved hard rock. I have to go with Rainbow Rising. It has only six songs and every song on it is classic hard rock. The one exception is of Do You Close Your Eyes, which is great but doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of songs on the album. Side two of Rising is a masterpiece, as good as heavy hard rock ever got. Ronnie James Dio’s voice is just stunning on every song. It has some of Blackmore’s best playing on any album he did with Purple. Cozy is a monster on drums, especially on side two of the album. Love Rush one of the first concerts I ever went to in 1978. 2112 is a huge step forward for Rush. It’s a great album that rocks hard, but it loses some steam on side two of the album. The songs are very good, maybe great, but not as strong as the songs on side one. Geddy Lee’s voice is an acquired taste. He is nowhere near the singer that Dio is. The musicianship of Rush on 2112 is very impressive. Peart is becoming the best drummer in rock music, and a greet lyric writer with something to say about mankind and society. Rush would go on the make better records in the future. Rising is the best Rainbow album and it rivals some of the best Deep Purple albums.

Such a tough call , but it's Rush for me . Yes, I'm a Rush fan, and they are the reason why I got into this genre, and that's why they pipped it for me . And the other reason is what such bravery to just do a 20 min opus knowing full well that their label would have a meltdown . My hypothesis is that Caress Of Steel suffered more from their choice of title and the sort of pea soup colored cover than the quality of the music. As for Rainbow my primary inspiration from them is Ronnie James Dio. 2112 was amazing when I first heard it in 1990, after being a bassist in bands covering Maiden and Metallica. Now I'm much more focused on vocal skills and as you mentioned Dio is one of the greatest. My only interest in Rainbow is the Dio years, same with Black Sabbath after the early 70's when Ozzy went so over the cliff it was heinous. In terms of influence on Metal Rainbow was a phase for Dio that prepared him for his own very successful band later on, Jimmy Bain going all the way until his death with the tribute band The Last In Line after RJD passed.

Does anyone here know what made 2112 catch on and start selling? I was not born until 1981, but my understanding is that the first album sold okay. Right? If that is the case, their name was known, so that would help. However, what was the catalyst for 2112 to sell a lot more? A specific song/single? People who saw the tour just went and bought the album afterwards? Promotion by the label, band(tv appearances, radio station visits and shows, etc), radio(radio play)? I am aware that in a lot of cases it is going to be a combination of all of this, but was there an original and definitive watershed thing that got the ball rolling, and if so, what was it?

It's a mystery to me, Bastille Day and Necromancer I enjoy more than anything off 2112. The epic on side two is badly concieved but has exciting moments so I don't believe 2112 is si much better than Caress of Steel. I think it had a better cover and the opening is monumental. And they maybe got a good tour to support the album, and maybe the audience wasn't quite ready for a prog metal album, and by 1976 classic rock band like Zep, Sabbath and Deep Purple were floundering a little perhaps....

Rush built up a steadily increasing US/East Coast underground fan base with hard rock/proto-metal youth. They were on our radar solidly by '77 and when 'AFTKs' came out in '77 they were as on the radar as Sabbath, Priest, Scorps, et al. Many new fans in the 12-15 year old age range got 'AFTKs' in real time, and '2112' and the live 'ATWAS' all at the same time. We started a fan call and letter campaign to rock radio stations to get them to play Rush to little effect until '80 when the ironic single "Spirit of Radio' broke through. Much 70s music culture was still underground 'friend-to-friend' networks. Many great bands like UFO and Budgie never really cracked. And by '80, post punk with jazz, prog, electronic and non-blues based rock influences had turned into hardcore and new wave- most of which did not see corporate dominance or commercial success until it emerged in the '90s as 'alternative, grunge, new metal and EDM. Rap had a similar underground path in the respective cities and regions it developed. Metal had a more 'above ground' path in the '80s. Motorhead, Ironmaiden, Sabbath, Ozzy et al uptempoed hard rock with punk flavor into the evolving subgenres up through the 90s. The underground largely dismissed commercial hair metal and pop through that whole period. '80s underground is still the most diverse and under-explored era of modern music, when music was art and free to represent actual culture. Andy's thesis on the morphing of 'prog' into various '80s forms is spot on, though nobody recognized or called it that during that time.

Andy, I find it hard to believe that someone (like yourself) could accept the excesses from “Tales of Topographic Oceans” and “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway”, but not the quieter sections of “2112”. It’s true that Rush took a long time to establish their sound, but one of their greatest influences is Yes. Rush hosted Yes when they were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (an institution that I have very little respect for). 2112 was clearly inspired by progressive rock. 2112 is an operetta (small opera) with “arching dynamics” (sections of loud and soft music). The softer parts are there to advance the story, and create contrast to the louder sections. In doing so, the louder sections are that much more profound, creating anticipation and release in the listener. Rush are a household name among serious musicians, their influences is obvious; certainly Richie Blackmore is as well, but Rainbow, probably not as much. Sorry about the rant, but if you can be fiercely British, I can be fiercely Canadian. Otherwise, I enjoyed the video. Jack G from Canada

I love Rush but they are clunky. In the early days especially there is a naivety to there compositiona; approach and a limit to what the are technically capable of. 2112 is not one through composed piece, it's basically a number of shorter songs squashed together. Their arrangements are pretty simple, as is their chord voicing and overall harmonic approach. Yes can be clunky too, but nowhere near as Rush. Fans worship Rush becuase they fulfill a purpose in heavy rock of opening the door to more complex forms, But musically they are not in the same league as many prog and fusion bands. On Farewell to Kings and Hemespheres they become much more sophisticated but nowhere near some other Prog, Listen here to how Gentle Giant use their advanced virtuosity and compositional dexterity to conjour the experience of going to school. Rush were never this sophisticated. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orypZ8Kjy564iZc.html

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer and Rainbow Rising is not simple? i have heard and like Gentle giant. It is hard for a trio is not as complex as a 5-member band. But I guess to each his own. I cannot see Rush as clunky on 2112. Caress of Steel? Yes. Even Fly by night with the dog sounds. But not really 2112. rush was never as prog as Yes as far just making technical songs. I think Rush did a much better job making music that people can groove to. Yes, had some but also went way out there in the name of prog. Rush did what Rush wanted to do and never worshipped Prog or innovation for innovation's sake like Yes or King Crimson. That might make them more prog. in a way.

As much as I admire Ronnie James Dio's vocals, I have always found that operatic approach slightly cringeworthy when married to rock music.

the original Rush record is so much more than your view here. But I have not minded Geddy's voice that much. I could say Dio's voice is rather cheesy. But I like both of them. but I have listened to that record not too long ago and the music is much better than you make it out to be. Sure, some of the music is heavily inspired by Zeppelin but they do a great job in their own right. Fly By night is a terrific album and IMO better than Rainbow rising. There is just more to it than Rising. I think you are right that Rush started the genre really with Fly by Night. Caress of Steel is okay. It gets a little too weird for most people. Most of your review seems to be what you can hear on Beyond a Lighted Stage. It is as if you watched that and used the critical aspects of that as your own.

If we are analysing the vocal performances on the two albums then we have to give it to Rainbow Rising every time. Dio's performance is majestic. He has a very powerful operatic style on this album, he hits every note - his range is vast.

Geddy Lee's voice is something of an acquired taste and personally I can't stand it for more than about 10 seconds. The album I prefer is a straight forward decision. Due to my own personal tastes and prejudices, never having been able to listen all the way through 2112 I couldn't offer an opinion on which is the better album.

How does 2112 fall flat after The Temples Of Syrinx? Fanning about and clunky? The acoustic passages to me balance out the heaviness of the other tracks, I think that's what makes it work so well as a cohesive piece. It basically sounds like you're saying that if 2112 was a completely heavy piece from beginning to end, you would like it much more but because of the acoustic passages, the whole thing is a failure? Are you serious? Well, this is your opinion we're all listening to but I have to completely disagree. You obviously have an emotional connection with Rising that you don't have with 2112 and I could tell from the start of your commentary that you would pick it in the end. But to answer you question about 2112...Sacreligious? Yes! : )

If the question is what album the birth of prog metal is, then it has to be 2112. I do not see Rainbow rising as prog metal. The album is great but just not prog-metal. 2112 Could be classified as prog metal. It is definitely prog.

Rush is a long-time favorite of mine. I just gave Rising a listen and it's enjoyable enough, but still not up there with 2112. It is concise.

Yes I'm a huge Rush fan (can you tell?). You said the 2nd side of 2112 was weak, I'll take side 2 of 2112 over the whole Rising album. Rising is a strong effort from Rainbow, maybe their best album? But sorry, comparing this to 2112? No way is it better composition-wise, lyrically, musically. 2112 ALL the way.

Completely agree. Rising is okay for regular metal. I do not see it as progressive metal or even really proto-progressive metal. it is very straight forward. I do not hate it but it does not seem to be in the same league or genre.

Some might not think it imperative but I think there is also something to be said about the fact that it takes 5 guys in Rainbow to make "their sound" and only 3 guys in Rush to make theirs. Again, important? Maybe not, but I think it speaks to the level of musicianship Rush have.
