Very cool video! I have a couple of notes since I investigated this a few months ago for a separate thing: - The 5th & 6th slots in a room actually can do the shortcut. Respawns exist in 4 rows of 3; slots 5 - 8 will spawn horizontally adjacent to each-other, as will slots 9 - 12. Since 5 - 8 are all in a row equal distance from the checkpoint in front of them, all of them can do the cut. This misconception is probably due to Bean's video since the full logic behind respawns wasn't understood at the time and he probably just made a guess. - The respawn itself is not between checkpoints, you actually respawn well behind the checkpoint that's directly behind the finish line. The actual reason this only works for some slots is the 95% rule, which happens to come into effect exactly between the 1-4 respawns and the 5-8 respawns. - You are actually cutting off way more than 95% of the track when doing this respawn, though... but it still works since the lap completion on this track is actually bugged, due to a calculation oversight that has to do with split checkpoints. Without going too into detail, the point right after the final ramps before the big 180 is 66% of the lap despite realistically being about 85% through. Without this bug, the player would respawn at the 98% point, and the ultra wouldn't exist (the normal one still would exist, though). This bug being fixed would have also patched the ultra on Grumble Volcano (and potentially more tracks, but I haven't checked them all). - Very small nitpick detail, but I figured I would mention: your respawn slot isn't always what the mii screen before voting shows, it's actually the slot you *joined* the room in. If you join a 10 player room in 10th, and 2 people leave, you will be shown as being the 8th slot, but for respawns you will still be in slot 10. This game is a complete mess, I fear. Amazing video though, I'm happy this shortcut is getting some attention again

The thing with Arthur's record was not that it took 5 years to pull off, yes, that played a part, but that wasn't a large reason for it to become so widespread. The REAL reason is because up until the Quacker method was found out, this shortcut wasn't considered POSSIBLE in real-time, at all. Seeing an 'impossible' shortcut made possible, with the addition of it having took that long, that's what made it special That aside, great video about this indeed forgotten shortcut, there aren't many that have actually pulled it off.

hi! i was in the original lobby where they were first doing testing on the old RR ultra. there's a video still up of it on my channel, one of the earliest things i uploaded. i think bean took it down because sword0fseals played a prominent role in the video, and i think bean scrubbed his channel of sword's existence once the allegations were proven. the link to his video is still in the description of my video, it just leads to a "this is no longer available" message. maybe you can wayback machine the old link. not gonna post direct links because of how youtube is y'know. sucks that the original explanation was taken down, but bentokage in these comments explained the glitch better than bean did in the video, just because we have vastly improved knowledge about the glitch and the checkpoint system now. a bit of history lost but at least the information is still out there.
