In this video we look at the many vocalists of Ritchie Blackmore's band RAINBOW, and ask Who Did It Better? Ronnie James Dio, Graham Bonnet, Joe Lynn Turner, or Ronnie Ramiro?
RAINBOW - Ronnie James Dio - Graham Bonnet - Joe Lynn Turner - Ronnie Romero - Who Did It Better?
Rainbow was another one of those bands that produced one great lead singer after another and the frontmen became quintessential examples of some of the greatest singing in all of rock.
What other bands can you think of that fostered multiple lead vocalists who went on to achieve rock greatness? Share with me in the comments!
I’ll be looking at live performances of the band’s former frontmen starting with Ronnie James Dio whose evolution we’ll see through his open throat, effortless sound.
We’ll also look at the more commercially successful frontmen Graham Bonnet and Joe Lynn Turner and we’ll compare them to Doogie White and Ronnie Romero.
I want to know who you thought did it better? Share with me in the comments!

I gotta say, Dio singing Stargazer is some of the best vocals I've ever heard. Really stuck in my mind, and I still listen to it every now and then and it still blows me away. Ronnie Ramiro sounded great but Dio just killed it. What a legend.

Dio, Bonnet and Turner are all supreme vocalists. Blackmore hit three home runs with these guys. It's impossible to hit a trifecta in a situation like this, but Blackmore did it.

This is the hardest one yet. I am a HUGE Dio fan but Joe Lynn Turner sang his lungs out in the studio on Difficult To Cure! Bonnet had a certain vibe on Down To Earth that really worked but I can't give it more than one listen at a time as its hard on tne ears after a while. So, all that being said - Ronnie Dio all the way!! The first Rainbow albums are 24 carat gold masterpieces.

When Dio sings I feel a magic come out of his voice. The dynamic is incredible and the way he connects with the lyrics takes him to a level behind the others. Doogie White should get more credit for his part as a singer in Rainbow, Bonnet had a remarkable voice, but his stage presence and charisma on stage could have been better. The only true, real singer, of course, the great Ronnie James Dio, but second best, I would like to say Doogie White; the second best, after Dio, of course. Nothing against Joe Lynn Turner, but he worked better with Malmsteen. Rainbow, 1975-1978, with Ronnie James Dio, that´s hard to beat.

Ronnie could and did sing it all better than anyone. The best Rainbow ballad is Rainbow Eyes and if Ronnie had wanted to sing in a more commercial direction I'm sure he would have been the best at that too...but thankfully he didn't. In any case his singing on the Butterfly Ball is a glimpse as to how good he would have been moving that way.

I think Rainbow's current Singer Ronnie Romero is really good and very underrated. Maybe my second favorite Rainbow Singer. I agree, that the band sounds tired. Ritchie has his moments but he's 75 and the drummer and bass player are pretty pedestrian sounding. Not exactly Cozy Powell and Bob Daisey. JLT was a really good fit for the post Dio Pop era. Some great songs from that era like "Street of Dreams." On a side note, Ritchie is not only one of the most iconic guitar players ever but often overlooked are all the great Singers he discovered. David Coverdale as well as the Rainbow stable of great vocalists. So many icons from the Blackmore/Purple/Rainbow family tree. Love your videos Ken. You're a great teacher and analyst and I love hearing my old favorites get some appreciation too.

Perhaps I misunderstood your comments at the beginning, but Ronnie was in Rainbow before Black Sabbath (Rainbow morphed out of Ronnie's prior band Elf because Blackmore wanted to record a few things that Deep Purple didn't want to go along with). So, the Black Sabbath tone came after his Rainbow tone. Regardless, for me, Ronnie (along with Blackmore) was Rainbow, even though Graham and JLT made some great commercial music with them. I'm forever grateful that Blackmore's Rainbow really showed the world what Ronnie could do.

Surprised how much of the lower chording DIO could get into his Tenor sound , especially being small in stature. Describing Glenn Hughes as " Tubular" or slightly closed in from "full voice" may be accurate. I see a good example with Ozzy singing " oh lord, yeah!" on B4 in War Pigs adding lower chording , where as replacement singer Ray Gillen closes off the lower chording and goes up B4 C Db instead of B4 to A4 Great point about Ronnie singing Db It has the tone of an Ahh vowel on A4. Glenn is my favorite singer. Not for replacing Dio though

Ken, really digging this series! Thank you for all of your time & efforts to do this! They are all really good singers but IMHO Ronnie James Dio is the voice of Rainbow! As you mentioned he hits the notes with little effort and the incredible powerful range and notes that came out of him are to this day just amazing! I agree that Graham Bonnet's voice sounds very forced and to me he struggles to hit the same notes that Dio did with ease! Joe Lynn Turner sounds to" Foreigner" for my tastes(not a bad thing just my observation). Ronnie Romero is very close to Dio, very powerful with soul! I am also glad you mentioned Ian Gillan, his singing on Jesus Christ Superstar(as the past of Jesus no less!) is just incredible and for those who have never heard this amazing Rock Opera need to do so immediately!!

Rainbow only had virtuoso singers, they’re all great in their own ways. Along with possessing one of the finest voices in the business, Ronnie was the most artistically gifted of the Rainbow singers, which showed in his incredible consistency and taste in everything he sang. However, Bonnet deserves a lot more credit from people, that man had one of the most naturally powerful and unique voices I’ve ever heard. He has a whole discography full of amazing vocal performances and deep cuts (“I’m a Lover”, “Stand in Line”, “Hiroshima Mon Amour” and “Only One Woman” are one-of-a-kind performances) and he was always on point whenever he sang “Love’s No Friend” with Rainbow, that song always highlighted his true vocal potential especially during those vocal improvs during the performances. There’s a vocal range compilation of him here on KZfaq that showcases his full potential very well, man could sing incredibly well but was always a bit too reliant on other great writers and producers, but give “I’m a Lover” a listen if you want to hear Bonnet at his best! Lynn Turner was also cool, he had that bluesy/soulful belt thing going that sounded amazing on some of Rainbow’s originals, especially on “Can’t Let You Go” which is almost like a rockier Michael Bolton type sound, great voice

JLT's solo album "Rescue You" basically sounds like a Foreigner album, and he also released a cover version of "Waiting For A Girl Like You", so it's kinda obvious that he was influenced by Lou Gramm. Apparently he even had an offer to join Foreigner at some point... one of the greatest singers of all time, imo.

When I 1st heard Foreigner 4. I thought it was Rainbow and Jlt. Even tho that album was out way b4 , I think Ritchie wanted to crack the USA market

Funny you say “Rescue You” sounds like a Foreigner album because not only does JLT have the Lou Gramm nuances, Al Greenwood who was Foreigner’s former keyboardist is on that album.

I have to agree with you about the new Rainbow lineup. I really feel like Ritchie has a “let’s just get this over with” attitude. He put together a lineup of players who were good enough, they played, he took his paycheck and went back to playing medieval acoustic lute music.

THANK YOU!!!! Was really hoping you would do them! This was the first time I heard Ronnie Romero, and wow - he sounds awesome despite the band. It seemed to me that the signers were best when they were singing their songs as opposed to songs from albums from the other singers (Bonnet didn't sound so good doing Ronnie, and what I have heard of Joe Lynn Turner doing Bonnet wasn't that good), but when they do their stuff - each one was awesome.

DIO was always another level and had unique style by the time and more technical, which suited Rainbow the best. Ronnie Romero is phenomenal singer, he can nail any Deep Purple singers and DIO on top. But he didn't bring anything new on the table. He still has things to proof.

Joe Lynn Turner is way more a Gospel and Soul type of blues phrasing, it’s great! He could trade lines with Joe Cocker. I never really heard this guy. I also think of Paul Rogers here a bit. Now a question: how many stoopid good singers DID Blackmore work with… it’s crazy.

Personally, Joe Lynn Turner is my favorite Rainbow frontman because that’s where I came in - Straight Between the Eyes and Bent Out of Shape were my first two Rainbow albums in high school. That said, the way Graham Bonnet just belts out “Since You’ve Been Gone” makes that my favorite Rainbow song. And I went back and got the earlier Ronnie James Dio albums, and it’s like a different band, but amazing vocals as always by Ronnie. But just hearing that slice of Ronnie Romero singing “Stargazer” - wow, absolutely scorching! (even if he got no help from the band on that)

I have seen Rainbow live several times, with Dio, Bonnet and Turner. I did not see Ronnie Romero, never liked that version of Rainbow so did not even want to see them live. For me Dio brought not only his voice, he brought also his emotions and feel of the music to the stage. His style of singing added so much more to the concerts, Dio told you a story, took you along on a journey and Ritchie was feeding of it. Together they were more than the sum of the two. With Bonnet and Turner I never had the idea it was a band, it was a group of musicians, each doing there own thing, but never adding to each other. Maybe I was imagining, but with Dio Ritchie was enjoying himself, giving his best. With Bonnet and Turner it looked like Ritchie was just going through the motions, playing his part, but never reaching the top level he had with Dio. Therefore Dio for me was by far the best singer Rainbow ever had.

The first time I heard Rainbow, was when JLT was singing lead. I thought he was really good! Dio was doing his Dio solo thing by then. If I was in a record shop & I had enough money to buy a Rainbow or Dio album, I would have picked Dio, hands down. JLT has a harder, more rocking, Jimi Jamison sound/tone quality to his vocals. Imo

JLT definitely had the edge for melodic and bluesy tones. Like his style. JLT was actually in the process of doing vocals with Mick Jones when a few of the songs were being recorded for Foreigner’s Inside Information Album. When Lou learned about this, he wrapped up his 1987 solo tour and cooler head’s prevailed.

There is some decent footage from Graham’s last show headlining the Monsters or Rock festival at Donington 1980. That B&W Texas show mix is terrible on the video and not really a fair reflection of his vocals. I like all eras of Rainbow, but the Rising line up will always be my favourite. Saw Rainbow twice with Ronnie Romero & he’s fantastic. Sadly the Doogie White era has been forgotten by Ritchie with Stranger in us all being the only album he’s not played songs from during the recent Rainbow revival shows. I get the impression that he saw that album as an obligation to BMG for leaving Purple mid tour in 1993 & once the resulting tours were complete he left the world of Rock for 19 years. Ritchie used to say Joe was his favourite vocalist & Street of Dreams was the closest he got to the Foreigner sound. Personally I like Doogie & it was a shame we never got a second album with him, he made a great live album with Cornerstone. Sadly like many former Rainbow singers he ended up with egotistical megalomaniac Yngwie. Of the 2016 Romero shows the two in Germany were more like rehearsals. They had no real rehearsal time due to Ritchie having hand surgery. The Birmingham show was by far the best show with the best atmosphere too, the only one not officially recorded too. The mix in 2017 was far superior to the German shows in 2016. David Keith the drummer got a proper kit & they sounded more like a band. If you can check out some of the bootleg footage from the Birmingham show. I have one on my page of him signing Soldier of Fortune, it’s acoustic and superb. I may have a video from 2017 too on here, I know I put two songs from The Sweet on as they were an awesome opening act.
