This was a contemporary western. Prior to the 50s, most westerns were not set in the old west. They were set in the west of their own day, which was still very much a 19th century culture, even though they had a few phones and cars.

i was thinking the same thing. aside from the horse and the colt revolver, what else did he buy? hell, at the time this was set you could probably have bought rainbow valley for $210
