Alcohol Ink pendants can be absolutley stunning. I have been making alcohol ink pendants for several years now and I'm always looking for ways to improve what I do or try different ideas I have.
When I planned this video tutorial, I didn't intend for it to be about alcohol ink pendants - it was going to be about making paper beads from my alcohol ink paintings.
But I loved the paintings so much, I couldn't bear to roll them up into beads because most of the lovely ink blends and patterns would be hidden.
So I decided to make a video about alcohol ink pendants. I have made alcohol ink pendants before and those videos have been very popular. So maybe people will enjoy an update about how I made these ones.
In this new video, I do show you the results of using the paintings to make paper beads but I mainly show you how to create the alcohol ink designs/paintings and how I get the texture and gold veins throughtout the finished pieces.
Using alcohol inks is very satisfying, especially if you are someone who is afraid to have a go at making art. The alcohol inks are so expressive that they practically create the paintings for you while you watch - you can't really get this wrong.
But if you decide to make these alcohol ink pendants, or indeed any craft using alcohol ink, please be safe with them. You need lots of ventilation and preferably a vapour mask, especially if you use and alcohol ink blender or neat rubbing alcohol.
Please take care of your lungs and also wear ruber gloves as alcohol inks stain skin and the surfaces you are working on.
And if you like the designs/paintings I made in this video, you can get them as free printable downloads over on my website:
www.funcraftstodoathome.com
Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy this video about alcohol ink pendants.

Just FYI - on one of my devices (old laptop, Windows 10) I have a problem with volume on this and several other youtube channels; on my (also fairly elderly) android tablet, volume is absolutely _fine_ on everything.
@RainbowLane

Many thanks for that - I really appreciate you taking time to let me know. It is hard to explain to people that the volume is perfectly fine on all my devices and so I cannot explain why it is low for certain people - so this is really helpful. Thanks so much for watching too.🙏💕

Thank you Wendy, I appreciate your comments. I agree, alcohol inks can be so bad for our health. It does worry me that the stuff we use in our arts and crafts might not be taken seriously enough from and health point of view. I was guilty of that myself but as I get older, I am more and more aware of the hazards to our skin and respiratory system of so many different art materials. Also fire hazards from alcohol based products. I watched a video recently of some poor girl who got very ill from using resin without a mask and proper ventilation and yet there are many people doing resin tutorials without mentioning the dangers. Thanks so much for watching and taking time to reach out. Glad you are someone who thinks about these things. 🙏💕

Hi Denise, yes it really would. I have got resin but I rarely use it because the fumes bother me a lot. I have tried the UV resin and also the two part epoxy resin but they both irritate my chest and I hate working in a fumes mask. If I ever get a fan filtration system I will probably use it more but I doubt that will happen! Or maybe I'll do some outdoors in summer. Thanks so much for watching and reaching out. Much appreciated.🙏❤️

@RainbowLane

Hi, I use a variety of sticking options from double-sided tape to various glues. From memory I think I used a strong double sided tape for those pendants but I can’t say for certain. They are still stuck firm in the bezels after 2 years though. A thin layer of Dimensional Magic would hold them in too. Thanks for watching and reaching out. 🙏💕

Hi there, thank you for sharing this creation, i was wondering if i could use Mod Podge instead of the PVA glue.
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, you’re welcome and thanks for being here. I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t use Mod Podge instead of PVA. My guess is maybe use the glossy one. But in theory any Mod Podge should work as the aim is to make the inks run on the paper instead of being absorbed. I use PVA because it’s pretty inexpensive compared to Mod Podge in the UK. And I’ve never really been sure how standard Mod Podge is different to PVA - it seems finer but still works like PVA. Maybe test it out on a small piece of paper first? Let me know if it works. Thanks for watching. 🙏💕

Hi Sandra, many thanks for watching and reaching out. I'm glad you like the video. Unfortunately, I can't answer your question because I don't use epoxy resin - I am highly sensitive to chemical odours and the fumes get me even with a mask on. But I don't see why it wouldn't work. I do apologise for the delay in getting back to you. If you ever decide to go ahead and try using the resin with this, do let me know the outcome because several people have asked me about it. Beautiful work. Could I use photo paper to make this?
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 11 ай бұрын
You might be able to use glossy photo paper but really you’d have experiment with it. I’m not sure how well it would scrunch up to get the ridges - probably best to try with a small piece of glossy photo paper like a 6x4 to see how it reacts. I just tried scrunching up a sheet of glossy 6x4 and it did go wrinkly and get ridges quite well but it made a really annoying squeaking sound! If you can put up with that maybe try it😍I’ll drip alcoholic inks on it when I get a moment and I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks for watching and reaching out. 🙏❤️

Love this! How long does the alcohol ink take to dry?
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 11 ай бұрын
Thank you - I usually leave any wet media overnight to be sure. Alcohol ink is strange though in that some colours dry quicker than others! Very odd. But leave over night or check to see if it’s touch-dry after a few hours. It also depends on your climate and season too. Thanks for watching. 🙏❤️

Hi Carolyn, I’m sorry for such a late reply - yes you do crush/screw the Yupo paper up to get creases but you need to get the thinner one so you can do it easily. There are different thicknesses of Yupo. Again, sorry for late response and thank you for watching. 🙏❤️

Hi Wendy, many thanks for your comment, glad you liked the video. Regarding your question - I am aware that people do say that alcohol ink fades but it’s not as straightforward as saying yes it does or no it doesn’t - it depends on a couple of factors. So what I’ll do is post a picture on my Community section that will help answer your question based on my experience - and it is only MY experience based on where my pieces have been kept and the climate I live in. Give me a few hours and I’ll either post a picture or a video short. I’ll let you know when it’s up on KZfaq. Thanks for watching and for a very good question. 🙏💕

I am waiting for my paper to dry and can't wait to start! These are gorgeous. I have a question... what is the difference between the regular inks and the mixatives? I want to understand what I'm buying before I choose my colors, but the descriptions aren't really clear.

@RainbowLane 2 жыл бұрын
Well Diego, I could tell you that I like them best with (or without) couldn’t I? And whatever I tell you is down to my taste which could be completely different to yours. So really, you’ll need to experiment yourself and see what YOU like best. I could say that with is best, you get the product and then you hate the results. So my opinion is really worth nothing - see what I mean? I can only show you how I have chosen to do things.

I’m sure you can. I’ll let you know because I just got a UV light and some resin. I haven’t used it yet because I need to get a proper mask first. I saw a video by a young woman who used lots of resin without protecting her lungs from the fumes and is now ill. So it’s put me off using it until I get a good mask. I will let you know. 🙏❤️

@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane Жыл бұрын
Hi Allie, possibly but it might be a bit flimsy. I'm sure the inks would react the same way because I assume the paper wouldn't be pourous but I'm not sure what it would be like to handle and put into the bezels. My own preference would be something a little more robust. Have you tried it? Apologies for delay in getting back to you. Thanks for watching.🙏

@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane Ай бұрын
It is a liquid that you can use in any crafts where you need to add dimension. For example, you could put small blobs on a card to look like tear drops because when it dries, it is raised up off the surface. But you can also use it as I have to put a thick coat over pendants in bezels. But you can also use it as a sealer, for example, to seal paper beads. Hopoe that helps. Thank you for watching. 🙏❤️

Hi Marie-lyn, apologies for the sound being low for you. I’m not sure why that happens for some people. It clearly is low for some, because other people have said the same thing. Unfortunately I’m not an audio expert and I don’t have a sound engineer to consult - there is only me on my production team😍. There is a complete transcript of the audio that you can see by scrolling down and clicking the Show Transcript button. The sound is coming across as normal on my iPad, iPhone and Mac. I have also checked via friends and family devices so I don’t know why it is low for some people and not others. Again, I am really sorry. Thank you for watching and letting me know. 🙏💕

As far as the beads are concerned, can't you just roll the plain paper into the bead and then decorate it?
@RainbowLane
@RainbowLane 2 ай бұрын
Yes, you certainly can try whatever you want when you are making beads - no hard and fast rules! 🤗 Personally I do prefer painting my papers first because it’s much faster than painting each bead individually. However, some people find painting each bead very relaxing. Thanks for watching and taking time to reach out with an idea, much appreciated. 🙏💕
