The reason I heard Hylton Valentine (lead guitar, behind Eric) was laughing was because off camera, studio technicians were secretly wheeling Alan Price (organ), seated on his little dais and still playing, to the front of the set for that final shot where they take their bow. Hylton started cracking up at this little bit of absurdity, and since there was no time (or money?) for another take, the laughter had to stay in! 😀

I was 16 when the "British invasion" of music swept all over the world, led by The Beatles. That was a magical time. The Animals were an integral element of that wave. I played their "Best of" album over and over and over. "The House of the Rising Sun" was their first hit single in 1964. It's a gas to see the young generation, as these two reactioners, rediscover the music that was a big part of my teenage and early adult years. Eric Burdon was in the Animals, War and also had a solo career.

They chose this song to close their set as support for Chuck Berry on his uk tour. They recorded it nine days later in one take & it went straight to number one around the world. The vocalist's name is Eric Burdon & Alan Price, who went on to have a successful solo career, is playing his Vox Continental keyboard. The bass player is Chas Chandler who was responsible for introducing Berry to the uk.

This song is a Legend. The song tells of hard times for a family in New Orleans. The best version ever recorded is by the British Rock Band "The Animals" in 1964. I was 14 years old in the U.S. and will never forget this song. Their recording hit #1 on the UK Singles Chart and in the United States and Canada. It is still great today.
@iamthecaptainofmysoul2293

It’s a great version, but the song is way older than the New Orleans version, this is an old folk song from south west England, same theme tho, about the temptation of the devil.
@user-DrJoe-Future
@user-DrJoe-Future 4 ай бұрын
@@iamthecaptainofmysoul2293 Yes, I was aware of that. The song goes back to at least 1923 in the United States recorded by a number of musicians from the 1920s ,1930s, 1940s, 1950s and finally the Animals in 1960s and can also be traced back to England with different lyrics and title. The first group that I could find that used the current title with the current lyrics, and rocked it up by using electronic guitars and an electronic organ during the performance, was the Animals. Prior to them, it was an acoustic folk song with different titles and different lyrics.

It’s great when all the elements of a song mesh together so perfectly that it becomes unassailable. There are other versions of this song but everything here puts it above them. The constant steady drumbeat as a base, the bass as a heartbeat , the guitar melody as a familiar friend and the organ giving this version its distinctive style. Eric Burdon’s voice is what cemented it in people’s soul.

This particular video is from a British TV show called “Pop Gear” (a play on another show “Top Gear”). The Animals also did another performance on the show of their hit “Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood”. Of course it was rehearsed and choreographed, but no auto tune or other digital tricks lie in todays videos and performances, just talent and mastery.

The original song House of The Rising Sun, pre-dates the city of New Orleans. Fact. No rehearsal before this take from Eric Burton and The Animals. I've heard several different stories, for reasons of their own, they had enough money for one take in front of the camera... this performance. This was back when vocal and instrumental talent was actually all you heard. I listened to The Animals quite a lot in the '60s. This is one of the songs you never forget, nor do you forget the lyrics. Evens decades later.

The story may be that this was shot in one take, but Price and the organ appear in front of the set at the end, whereas the he was in back for most of the video. I have a hypothesis that Price picked up the organ and moved it forward just off camera, causing Valentine to crack up.

Particularly the technical aspects; like the production techniques, the flow and scene changes and the little extras like the "manically grinning guitarist" towards the end. There are so many elements, in addition to the fantastic music, that make it an outstanding video. Well done.

"she sewed my new blue jeans". Bet you can't guess what that means. So, I'll tell you. Back in the late 50s early 60s, blue jeans or dungarees were overly-long in the legs. It was the style back then to wear them with cuffs at the bottom which had to be sewn to stay rolled up. It had to be done well or it looked bad.

Love the performance and video. Would enjoy seeing a wider view to see how the organ player + organ got up to the front where and when the song ended. Maybe that's what the guitarist was smiling about -- the organist getting "wheeled" up front.

this was filmed for a tv program in the US. One of the most obvious parts of it was the fixed camera positions which necessitated them walking around the room in a row like that. they moved, the camera didnt. The suits were really hot for the time. Alan Prices Hammond Organ playing was famed and played for many many years as a solo artist too. Real cheesy sixties sound, brilliant.
